I think it is a male Oriole. Our females do have black heads but not that solid of black. I think that the flash may have caused the orange to wash out a bit more to look more like the female orange than the male orange.

I'm really into the first year of studying these birds and still confused.
I thought when the tail is solid yellow it's a female, all males have black
on top?

I was looking at some of my photos of the male and it seems it varies on the orange on the tail. I do have one bird book that says juvenile males have more orange so maybe the ones with more of an orange tail are last years males?? Here are two photos I took, the first one is a male back in May.....

and this next one is from today, as you can see there is orange on the top of this male's tail....

On your first picture it shows it clearly, black in the center top, going just about all the way to the end.
Second picture it doesn't show, because we're seeing it from the underside.

It looks like here is a female, male on top?

Here is another shot of my male, slightly different angle, he clearly does not have a mostly black tail like most adult males, I am thinking he is last years male. Yours is pretty hard to make a positive id as the flash clearly has washed the colors out to tell for sure. It could be either but I still think a male.

We had several females on our feeder this year. She is quite bland. It is a bird that doesn't catch your eye like the male. They came to the feeder for 3 months and just last week stopped. The male is beautiful.

Konrad, yes that is a female, coloring is right and they can really have varying amounts of black on the head. Notice in this photo no black on the tail but on the first one you posted you can just see that there is black on the tail closer to the body but not extending out like mature males.

On a side note we now have "seven" baby Orioles coming up to the deck for jelly!!
