The Kitchen Table

Just about done....

The house is cleaned, carpets are shampooed, laundry is done, I am about half way through with my holiday baking and I just have stocking stuffers left to wrap.

Tomorrow I will finish up my baking and wrapping then I am done! I am going to make one more batch of peanut brittle, a batch of butter cookies, decorate my gingerbread men, caramel coat marshmallows and make gingersnaps then I am done! WAHOO!!!

YOU GO GIRLIE!! I have one more tree to put in the dining room...but I can't find it...How the heck do you lose a 5 foot tall Christmas tree box? It's gotta be in the attic...

I baked oatmeal scotchies last night...their ok...No Bakes...their fabulous...Marshmellow Treats...my boys insist on them every year...Ick but they love them...and Choklit Fudge...WITHOUT NUTS...(Its mine...alllll mine!)...

Today is wrap day...I'd rather have my gums scraped but since we're keeping gifts at a minimum it should go by pretty quick...

My house is fairly clean except for the kitchen...it's a constant on going battle but by tonight it'll be clean...

Oh shoot...you mentioned laundry...DANG...I forgot that there's a load in the washer...!!

In a typical cattleya, the base of the current season's pseuodobulb will produce a new lead that will produce a new pseudobulb. And the new p-bulb will do the same thing next season. These new leads grow from a bud along the base of the p-bulb, where it connects to the main stem (or lead). Each p-bulb can contain several buds or "eyes" but typically only one will produce a new lead for the season. The other eyes are considered dormant (for the time being). They are dormant because they act as reserves in case the main p-bulb chain is severed, the plant can continue to exist by sprouting from one of its reserve eyes. Every now and then, a "dormant eye" from an old p-bulb will produce a new lead so the plant ends up with more new p-bulbs than the previous season. If these dormant eyes were not producing new leads, then the plant can never have more new p-bulbs than what it had the previous season. Imagine just a long daisy-chain of p-bulbs. Take a look at this picture. The new leads are growing in a pattern from right to left. The "active" eye is the swollen bud on the left-most stem. The previously "dormant" eye on the right-most stem is now producing a new lead after 4 seasons. All other eyes in between are still dormant.

greenglass, That's a great tip for the tomato paste, thanks! I consider myself a fairly experienced, handy cook (for ordinary stuff, I'm no gourmet), and never thought of that one. It bugs me too to leave so much behind, and I have a little mini plastic spatula-scraper thing that I've been using, which doesn't do a bad job but is a pain and leaves a bit at the bottom. When I spent a year in France, I found tomato paste regularly sold in a tube, like toothpaste, which was PERFECT --- you could just squeeze out whatever you needed. Mayonnaise was also sold this way. Another great packaging improvement was bleach --- you could buy it in a big jug like here, but you could also buy a little refill plastic pouch of ultra-concentrated bleach, which you would pour into your empty jug and then fill it the rest of the way up with water to get the same concentration. Sure was handy for life in Paris where one walked everywhere! Occasionally, over the many years since I was in France, I've found a store with imported foods that has tomato paste in a tube, and when I do I always stock up with several. (It keeps a year or two, though not forever.) It's been a while since I had one, however. If anyone knows of a source near Kingston, Ontario, I'd be grateful! ;-) Zabby

We're lucky enough to be on 17 acres, so all exposures will remain private. My wife is an architect (and I wish I were) - we designed the house together. Thanks so much for the compliment. We found our contractor by searching the web for modern houses in the Hudson Valley. We found one in Millbrook that won several awards, then we contacted the architect and asked who the builder was. We've been very fortunate to work with this contractor, and we'd recommend him in a heartbeat. As you mentioned, most other builders we met weren't too happy about things like reveals - they preferred to just use trim everywhere. Ours, on the other hand, was excited about all the modern details. He has the same aesthetic vision that we do, and you can't put a price on that. Loewen has three levels of windows, with R-values between 4.0 and 7.9. Obviously, there's a significant jump in price between each level. I am so envious of all of you that are so caught up and ready for Christmas. I have all my shopping and wrapping done and I have the baking and candy making done. I still have a lot of touch up house cleaning to get done before Christmas Eve, when the house is full of family and friends. We were supposed to only close the office where I work on Thursday and Friday but it was very slow yesterday and my boss is considering closing on Wednesday also. That would be such great news for me, as it would give me more time to clean....lol!
