Why don't people check snopes?

Another request to sign petition and forward, which I refuse and why should I forward these forwards. This one is for a Danita Marsh, happened in 2006 and now going around again. Of course when I check snopes and say any thing, they get angry at me!

Relative did that regarding a amber alert that was several years old and when I replied, she got quite angry! Too bad--delete is good. I told her I did not want any more stuff until she checked out!

Does the sender use the "Bcc" field for the e-mail addresses, or can you see all of the folks who received the message? If you can see them all, just click on "Reply to All" and then provide the link to the Snopes page that says it's a hoax. Shouldn't take too long for the sender to get the hint.

I have a friend that sends me forwards without checking Snopes and I've emailed her back many times with the Snopes link to her story. She sends less now, but will often send the ones that say "verified at Snopes" without checking for herself. Most of the time they are NOT verified by Snopes.

I don't know who told you that about Keeshonden but that's not particularly accurate as a definitive statement. I've been a Keesmom for 7+ years now and volunteered with Kees rescue for a time (left due to philosophical differences); it took us a year of research to choose a breed. (Mutts are fantastic dogs if you're more flexible than we are about size, temperament, and such, but we needed the relative predictability.) Like any dog, they do need exercise to stay healthy but ordinary walks can be plenty sufficient, which is one of the many reasons why we chose the breed. I taught him to go round on a lunge line like a horse for those days when I was too unwell and DH too busy to give him a proper walk, since he was never interested in things like chasing a ball or Frisbee. This is the first house we've had with a properly fenced yard as opposed to a trolley or a small fenced run primarily for toileting, and it's not even very large. Our handyman is Dutch (and he was very surprised to see a Keesie here!) and says they are as common "back home" as a Lab is here, even in dense urban areas. Of course, if you want to get into agility, flyball, or other doggy athletics, the average Kees is more than happy to oblige and bust his furry little behind to make his people proud of him. Keesies are usually far more intellectually energetic than physically energetic; they are often too smart and creative for their own good, and if they get bored they can get extremely inventive looking for something to do, which many people interpret as the dog needing to be exhausted with a great deal of vigorous exercise instead of mentally stimulated. That goes double if they're lonely, with many Kees preferring the company of humans to that of other dogs - they CAN be very intellectually and emotionally demanding dogs. sovra, your friends will be best off contacting a Dalmatian-specific rescue. They can start by Googling "dalmatian rescue" and working from there. A Dal with a history of aggression toward smaller animals (probably a high prey drive combined with lack of training/redirection) needs some serious rehab work with an experienced fosterer before s/he is ready for home placement.

Why always check Snopes you ask? Because Snopes will (usually) tell you whether the rumor (alert, warning, whatever) is true or false or somewhere in-between. Checking Snopes first tells you whether it is, in fact, something to be worried about or not. Why keep proliferating and getting people on alert if there's nothing to it? I am probably not going to be posting many pics when asking questions any more because I find that too many people are only looking at the pictures, NOT reading the text, and thus their responses are either directly contrary to something I've said in the text (for instance "get rid of XYZ" or "the color of ABC is wrong" when I've already said in the accompanying that I love XYZ so it's not going anywhere or that the color of ABC is really more toward mauve when it shows up as puce in the picture) or have nothing at all to do with what I'm asking. I find that intensely frustrating. I have almost no pictures of my current house because it's still in "whatta dump" stage. No paint (walls need a TON of work), short on furniture, dreadfully designed kitchen that's a perpetual mess because there's nowhere to put things... and forget outside pictures, a few weeks ago we ripped out almost every trace of vegetation outside (and will not be replacing it until next year, probably fall '09 to get the end-of-season sales) due to a honeysuckle invasion that I swear was growing by feet per day and was starting to attack the porch. I'll happily post pictures of my previous house because I think I did a pretty decent job with it. We're not on Google Maps but we're kinda-sorta on Google Earth - but the best you can get is a fuzzy whitish blob in the midst of a bunch of other fuzzy whitish blobs on a fuzzy grayish stripe. No closeups. Our town is clearly not a high priority as far as Google is concerned! WRT security - we live in a somewhat iffy neighborhood so I am one HECK of a lot more worried about the people a dozen houses down the street breaking in looking for meth money than I am about someone trying to track me down via the Internet (I Googlebate every so often just to see what's out there re: me) from half a dozen states away. I've been email-stalked and -harassed a bunch of times in my 18 years online because of my outspoken ;-) opinions and my ISPs have always been helpful in dealing with it. However, I've had meet-ups with a whole slew of people I've met online over the years, twice flying nearly cross-country to do so, and it's been grand fun.

You're a forum admin, aren't you? No, sadly, but if they approached me with a job offer, I'd have a hard time turning it down. This forum is too much fun. I've found that with certain people it's easier to delete without opening. Avoids hard feelings and they're none the wiser.

I don't care for forwards of any kind. If I have to scroll through a ton of other addresses and forwards to get to the actual email, I would just as soon hit delete. On occasion you get a really cute one and then at the very bottom...you will need to forward to 12 of your friends or something bad is going to happen. I guess I have a lot of "something bads" coming my way then, as I don't forward them...much less open them. :) And I don't care for my email address to show up on an email that is forwarded to someone else, who forwards it to someone else and so on. A lot of the times, it shows with my name and email address. That is my biggest peeve about them.

I use reply, and tell, I no longer want to be on such mailing lists, cause I value my address and don't want it out. I also state, if I get more of these, they will be blocked.

Second mistake from them, they get blocked; cause I mean it.

Even worse than the e-mails is when people post them on boards such as this one... then get mad when you call them on it.

My biggest pet peeve with e-mailers. I have a BIL
that sends me all sorts of "junk" that an Idiot wouldn't
believe, but he seems to. I return the link to
Snopes to him. But, he keeps sending stuff.

I have two relatives that continually forward everything. I've let them know a few times that something they've forwarded does not pass the Snopes test. It doesn't help. I just delete what they send as soon as I know it's something they've forwarded to everyone in their address list.

Forwarded stuff is mostly junk, and I delete a lot of it before even opening.

I don't know why people don't check, either. I'm not sending anything on unless I know it's true. I also hate all the junk people forward. The worst are the ones that tell you to forward to so many people in so many minutes to have good luck or whatever. Garbage!!

I've sent Snopes links to people in the past telling them they are forwarding untrue information and they should check (or use some common sense sometimes). A couple people who were bad about it replied to me with "I don't have time to check every email I get, I'm a busy person. I'm just trying to give helpful information to my friends." I answered "I'm busy too. I don't have time to read and repeat rumors."

I just don't hear from those people anymore. Go figure.

Unfortunately, some people aren't good at doing searches, on snopes or anywhere else.

Also, some people are gullible and just assume that everything they read in print, including forwarded e-mails, must be true.

I know it's irritating, but try not to be annoyed -- that reaction just raises your blood pressure.
It's more satisfying to press "delete" with a big ol' smile on your face!

she does this all the time and when my brother or I call her on it and send links she says "I don't have time to check everything!"
I delete all of her group emails without opening and have told her so.

Why don't people check snopes? Because they're lazy, inconsiderate and stupid. People that send this crap to you after being warned, aren't friends. If someone came to you house and dumped garbage on your lawn, you wouldn't like it. They might say "Oh, I didn't know!". OK, one chance. But when they come back the next day and the day after and the day after that with more garbage each time, you'd probably not appreciate it.

I maintain people should have to take an intelligence test to have an email address. And to drive but that's a different topic. Many people are too stupid to have email. And then they wonder why their bank accounts get drained when the Nigerian General chooses them to be partners!

I've cut off several people. I usually just "suspend" them for 6 months or so and put them on probation. If they're reasonably intelligent and learn from warnings that's the best. But there's too many stupid people out there. And many of them don't get their emails opened. Especially when the subject says "FWD: FW Fw: FWD: Fwd:...."

I love a good joke just like the next guy but if I have to go thru pages and pages of forwards then I just delete...especially when I've shown them how to delete the forwards and everyone else's addresses...

Why don't people check snopes?
