Fess up...do you make mistakes wrapping gifts at Christmas?

I was up wrapping untill 3:00am the night before Christmas eve. Did I make mistakes...yep...you bet I did...

My son in law opened a nice pair of pink socks with rubber dots on the soles...He said..."well these are cute"...LOL..they were for Jeff's girlfriend...I clearly had put son in laws name on it.

Another one of Jeff's girlfriend's gifts went to my daughter...

Everyone was okay with giving the gifts to the rightful owners...

They think it is just because I'm getting old...lol

I DIDN'T this year........everyone had their designated bag!

Except one for Addy Kay...the doll & stoller/buggy I just rolled it out when she was not looking.

Vickers made it very easy wrapping for her family using the bags; we just stuffed and put the name tags on as she seperated.

WHOMEVER invented the "gift bag" was brilliant!!!!

While wrapping I always have a few tape dispensers and scissors on the table and this year I accidently wrapped a tape dispenser and a pair of scissors along with a sweater lol Good thing I was there when the person opened it.

This reminded me of the year my god mother tried to wrap my gift for me -- a basketball. Also the creative way my mother and I wrapped my brother and his wife's present. I'll never forget Aunt Nellie coming in the house, throwing the ball, with wrapping on it, but coming off and saying "Steve, here's your Christmas Present. And Meg, don't ever try to wrap a basketball." We got lots of laughs out of that for years. I just lost her two years ago, but I smile everytime I think of that particular Christmas. The other I mentioned was two air line tickets we had purchased for them to come visit me in Washington D.C. My sister-in-law had been dropping hints about how nice a microwave would be. Sooo, mother and I found a box the size of one a microwave. We wrapped the tickets in a tie box, which my mother then proceeded to entirely tape it shut. Put that in another box, slightly bigger and with fruit in it to make it heavier. And so on until we would up in the big box. The look on my sister-in-law's face was worth all that we went throught to wrap it. Once she started unwrapping she knew something was going on but never suspected a thing. Her whole family knew, and they were notorious for blabbing, but this year, never said a word to her. Two of my happiest memoriese.

I have one that is more strange than funny, but appropriate for a decorating forum. Many years ago, just before Christmas, my BIL and his wife remodeled their kitchen, using apples as a theme--dark red and forest green colors. My MIL called and told me that for Christmas she and FIL were buying BIL/SIL new dishes, to match their new kitchen. She described the dishes as having apples painted on them, with a dark green edge band. Then she said, "And we'd like to get you new dishes, too." I was thrilled, because I'd been thinking of buying a new set of dishes to replace our old odds-and-ends, but hadn't wanted to spend the money. I told my MIL this, and thanked her, and mentioned that either a cream color, or a light sage green would look good in my kitchen. MIL: "No, we're getting you the same dishes, with apples on them, because that's what FIL likes." Me: "But, we don't have anything with apples on it in our kitchen, and really, nothing red or forest green." (The kitchen had no theme--it was neutral with cream and tan, and some light blue-green vintage pottery.) MIL: "Well, that's what we're getting you, and I'm sure they'll be just fine." Me: "Um, OK, thank you. That's really nice of you." On Christmas I opened the package, thanked the in-laws again, then used the hated apple dishes for about a year and a half. One day when the in-laws showed up for family dinner, I put out my brand new cream and sage dishes, that I'd finally bought for myself, without saying a word. Neither of them ever mentioned my new dishes. I love my FIL and my late MIL, and that was so out of character for them, it still puzzles me. BTW, I packed away the apple dishes, until just recently, when my DD needed dishes for her new place. She was happy to see the familiar pattern, especially since the dishes came from her grandparents. :)

When our kids were at home, we celebrated the 12 days of Christmas. We did do gifts, although only the one given on 12th Night/Epiphany/Feast of the Three Kings was a big one. The others were small, sometimes shared (such as a family movie), and for years they involved a treasure hunt each day to find them. They loved the treasure hunts so much that it didn't matter if the treasure was nothing more than a colorful pen or a candy bar. We kept up our tree and lights through Jan. 6th (even got a nastygram from the HOA in one neighborhood for not taking down the outside decorations fast enough.) At least once, but more often on the 26th and again on the 2nd, we had "backwards day" for which we ate pizza for breakfast and french toast for supper and stayed in our pajamas all day. Since we homeschooled, we scheduled a break from Christmas Eve until Jan. 7th. Our kids were into Legos, K'Nex, Puzz3D, and all sorts of building toys, so we spent a lot of our time working together to assemble new sets. We also watched the movies (VHS back then) they received, as well as old favorites. We took turns choosing the menu for each day so that everyone had favorite foods (even when that meant PBJs for supper.) On Epiphany, we enjoyed our first King Cake of the season (which runs until Mardi Gras.) Whoever got the "baby" (we used a plastic baby hidden from the bottom, but some people use a large nut) was the King (or Queen) of the Feast. These days, we're not together for most of the 12 days of Christmas (if at all.) I order King Cakes for each of us from a bakery in New Orleans that delivers them on (or the day before) Epiphany, but that's all we do now.

DH's family draws names for Christmas and we have a $25 limit. One year my FIL drew my name and asked me what I wanted. I had seen some Christmas themed dishes at Zellers for $25 and asked him for those. He wanted me to go and get them myself, but I didn't think that would be as much fun so I asked him to take care of it. Then my DH asked me what I wanted our small kids to give me. I told him the same thing, thinking that then I would have Christmas dishes to serve eight people as each package was a service for four. On Christmas morning I opened the gift from the kids and of course was thrilled to be surprised with my set of Zellers dishes. At the in-laws, I opened the same size box. Inside was a beautiful service for four of really expensive Christmas dishes - FIL didn't think the Zellers ones were nice enough! So then DH had to take back the Zellers dishes and we had to buy the rest of the service of the expesive one. DH had travelled to five stores in four towns to buy that set of Zellers dishes! To this day (about 25 years later) we still use those expensive dishes for the month of December.

I always wrap one at a time and mark it immediately. If I don't have a tag or something I write on there with a marker or something and cover it with the tag. Sometimes write it on the bow if I use one but make sure I tape it well. Normally I remember the gifts to the person so it never really got mixed up.

That said, I DID switch my state and federal tax returns one time!! And one time only!

That somehow reminded me of the episode of Cheers when Cliff was doing a video on how good it made him feel deliving the mail, with someone's Social Security check, letter from their grandma or whatever and he was dropping the mail in peoples' door slots. After he walked out of the frame, everyone came out into the hall and exchanged mail!

DS really liked the Far Side cartoon in the paper so, I got him a hard-bound book of the cartoons. When he opened the gift, he had a funny look on his face and I asked him if he liked it. He said yes, and he liked it when I gave him the exact book last year. OOPS! Dottie

LOL! Dottie, I gave my DD a DVD that I had given her last year also. I asked her if she was sure I wasn't just rewrapping the old one :)

I was happy that I had my gifts all wrapped by the day before Christmas Eve. I am usually up like you were Patti - wrapping late on Christmas Eve.

I had a day planned for wrapping here - and then they didn't have school, so the kids were home and it was mostly their gifts... I was glad I got it done though.

I only made one mistake this year. I gave all the kids a digital frame. I bought a 2 gig memory stick for each frame. I have all their pictures and their kids pictures on the computer so for each frame I put all the pictures of them as kids for each one and a few group pictures of their kids and their cousins. I also put all the pictures that I have of just their own kids. I labeled each memory stick so I could keep them straight. After I wrapped each gift I put the appropriate stick in the box and put a tag on each gift as it was being wrapped. When I wrapped the last box I took the stick to put in the box and saw it had Robert and Shannon's name on it. Well, that could't be, because I already wrapped their gift. I didn't want to unwrap the gifts I had already wrapped so I put that stick in the gift and put the name tag on it that I thought it was supposed to go to. They all opened their gifts last Saturday anyway while they were together, so it was an easy mistake to fix. They have all called since getting the gifts to let us know how much they like the digital frames with all those family memories in them. That's quite a compliment. They have never thanked us twice for anything previously.

The only issues I've ever had were with multiple names. I used to be married to a man that had the same name as his father, and his sister had the same name as his mother. My current SIL has the same name as her mother, my husband has the same name as my sister's husband.

My grandmother used to label the box. She'd put the item (clothes, towels, etc.) in the box and then put Sue on the box, so when she got around to wrapping she wouldn't have to open the box. I don't know why I don't do this since I always seem to have to open and close boxes over and over to check.

Yep! Put 2 year old DGD's name on a gift for her 7 year old sister. Fortunately it was clothes and not a toy they would have fought over. My DH does the wrapping and i 'try' to tie pretty bows and put the name tag on , so we have an assembly line going,,, guess i got way behind ... haha

Several years ago, when the nephews and great-nephews were much younger, I somehow mixed up the names of the five or six little boys on my list. I sent the Oregon children's gifts with the names of the Mississippi children and vice versa. The relatives still refer to that as the year Aunt Bettye re-named everybody's children! Bettye

Last year, my son opened his gifts (and there were many)!!! and did not seem happy, but rather confused. It seems as though when I was ordering from Amazon, I ordered from the
"If you bought this, you might like this" list. It was not anything he had wanted and so, the confused face! I felt terrible, but I got right on it and ordered the correct things which were delivered in a few days!!

I had gotten one of my grand sons a pair of sleep pants that had crazy designs from the "Office" all over them...Well, when my DH unwrapped them, he had the strangest look on his face...Oops

My wrapping mistake is leaving price tags on things. I order most items off the internet so I got used to not having to take off the price stickers... then when I buy from a regular store.. I forget.

I asked my now 25 year old DD how she found out there was no Santa, and she told me that I had left a Walmart sticker on a present that was from Santa.

Many years ago my inlaws were here for Christmas. DMIL and I didn't get along very well so I decided to do some research find something that she really wanted for Christmas to try and appease her. I found out she really, really wanted a Harry Connick Jr. cassette tape.

She was thrilled with her gift and asked if I could play it as she couldn't wait until she got home in a couple days to listen to it. I took my daughter's cassette out and popped Harry in and we all listened to him for the remainder of their stay.

On the day they were leaving town, I said, oh wait, don't forget your tape and picked up the case which had the tape in it and handed it to DMIL.

The next day when they got home I get a call from her and the first words out of her mouth were "Is this a joke or something?" What? I don't understand, I say. "Are you trying to kill me?" she says. What? I say. "You sent us home with Christmas with the Chipmunks with Alvin and friends cassette. I laughed so hard I cried and once again, I was treading thin ice the next time she was in town. LOL
