I just wanted to say a big warm thank you to all those who came up with ideas for making our Chrismas a memorable. You are right, it isn't about money. Tonight took the kids to Church youth group and celebrated Jesus's birth. Have school program tomorow and Church program on Sunday. Thanks for the ideas of GW and Salvation Army, thanks to you, I was able to get boats, gloves, scarves and hats for all 4 kids at a minimum cost. Some of it was new with tags on them. Also came up with some unusual presents, the girls like to help me cook and craft so I put together some kits with extra supplies I have on hand. Was able to pick up matchbox cars for the boys for a dollar. We have enough food to make snacks and goodies for the holiday season, and we are making trays to give to friends and shut ins. Teaching our children the meaning of giving is very important to us.

Also thanks for all the support, comments and the this too shall pass comments. I was really feeling alone and stressed, but I see that I am not the only one in my position. As someone mentioned, I am not a fly by night member, have been around here one way or another for 9 years, funny some remember when my Rhiannon was born :). I have had some dificulties and am trying to overcome them and have been doing good for almost 2 years. I haven't posted as much around here since the slamming of firemanswife and Glenda and others. This used to be a place of friends and support and seeing the doubts, accusations and finger pointings was not for me. Now that I have been on that end of it, I am glad that I am strong enough with thick enough skin to not dwell on it.

I love this forum, and no I am no leaving, living in a rural area, you guys are my sounding board, hint helper and friends. I am not going to let some who have nothing better to do in their time except to slam , doubt and hurt others make me leave. I did call our Red Cross,Salvation Army and neither could help. I also called the local resource center and they told me flat out that there were no programs in my area. I know so many called THEIR local area organizations and it is great that they are able to help. But mine don't. Seriously I wanted to post all the numbers just so you can call and ask them yourself, do I need to provide copies of my income taxes, pay stubs, and bills and payments so that you believe me and the situation that we are in?? Not being serious, because I know that even that wouldn't change the naysayers minds. All I have to say to you, is that I hope that none of you will ever be in my situation, and that if you are then you are attacked and doubted just as I have been.

Keep your spirits up! Your gifts for kids sound like lots of fun for you and them. I know its hard for a lot of people this time of year, but I think you have a true Christmas spirit.

Man that really sucks, but mowing over it will actually make it worse because of the plants ability to take root from single pieces of plants, even a single needle can become a separate plant. A lot of succulents are able to do this quite easily. I still have the stuff growing back, but most of it is growing underneath bushes and other plants and just pull it when I notice it. I got rid of periwinkle the same year, 2 years ago, both have a few plants popping up here and there my next door neighbor planted English ivy, and it is spreading into my yard, I'm going to ask him if I can pull it eventually and offer to plant an alternative that isn't such a destructive plant. English ivy in Michigan isn't usually so bad because of the winters here, but a few warm winters and it could become much more invasive.

Ezzirah, In general, my motto is "plant 'em if you've got 'em". Well, except when it is -22 degrees outside and sleeting....but I don't think anyone here would do that anyway. You could plant asparagus in January if you found it that earl.y and it likely would be fine, notwithstanding the fact that you live in a state where the temperatures can be 20 degrees below zero one day and then 60 or 80 degrees less than a week later. Almost any cold-hardy plants like asparagus, horseradish, rhubarb, strawberries sold bare root, etc., can be planted as soon as you see them in the stores. In fact, it is better for them to get out of those plastic bags and directly into the ground as soon as possible. Our Wal-Mart just got all their bare root stuff like that put out in the garden center within the last 3 or 4 days (seed potatoes and onion sets arrived a couple of weeks ago and then the rest this week), and their timing this year is pretty good because this week there is nice weather that will encourage people to plant the bare-root plants sooner rather than later. Bare-root plants left in the plastic bags too long often become diseased. I bought healthy, bare-root strawberries yesterday and will plant them later today to enlarge our small berry patch. I love planting season! I have put off planting asparagus forever because the bermuda and Johnson grasses encroach upon my garden from outside the fence continually. Because of asparagus' height, I've wanted to plant it along the north fence but know keeping the grass out will be a major ordeal. So, now I'm thinking I may plant in the bed that is second closest to the fence where the grass would be easier to keep out. Then, I could use the bed along the fence to grow something tall like pole beans that wouldn't be shaded too much by the asparagus. I hope your asparagus does well for you. Dawn

We bought our land 4 years before we built our home. We wanted to build our dream home and were not in a hurry to rush into it and then regret decisions made too quickly. I was the designer on the project and honestly enjoyed all that it entailed. We also had a wonderful builder that made the whole process go seamlessly and stress free. After we chose a house plan and had it updated to include the must-haves on our list, I poured over those plans for hours and hours making sure each room was as ideal as possible. Now is the time to decide if you want an HVAC duct in that place or a light switch or outlet in that spot. Decide if you want floor outlets, special outlets in pantries or cleaning closets. Are the rooms the right size? Could a couple feet make a difference anywhere? I sure wish we had made our laundry room 3 feet wider. Choose as many products as you can before your builder gives you his estimate. If you want granite and he's giving you laminate pricing the cost will be more. Also, painting the interior all one color is less expensive than having several rooms painted differently. Are you going with pre-painted siding or having the exterior custom painted? Are you using brick, cultured stone or natural stone? Huge difference between brick and natural stone. Plumbing fixtures vary in price as do lighting and appliances. Make sure he's taking your choices into account with his bottom line. Think about any upgrades in insulation, soundproofing, radiant heating, etc. The best advice I can give from someone who's been there, done that, is to sit down and really think about how you want the house to look, function and feel....and cost. Are there things you can't do without? For us it was a 3rd garage, his & hers master's closets, a computer space off the kitchen area where we can monitor our son, and a particular type of kitchen layout. Break the house plan down room by room if it's overwhelming but KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. If you're unsure of that then you can be talked into a lot of stuff you will find out later you really didn't need or want. Almost all of us have to stick to a budget so the trick is getting what you want overall at a price you can afford. This website is a treasure trove of information that I'm sure will benefit you in the days to come. Good luck on your build and keep your chin up.

Thank you Tracey, FOAS and Ann. I too will have to agree with FOAS. I have forgotten about Jasmine rice, which does have a distinct aroma. Long time ago I read that there are fake artificially flavored jasmine rice, so I have stopped buying them. Ann, the idea of my making wild rice risotto is not to see how close I can get to imitate Arborio risotto. I see wild rice risotto as a separate recipe that shares the same technique as typical risotto making. Wild rice risotto is not my invention by any means. If you Google, you will find over two million hits about wild rice risotto. There are many other people who like the taste and texture of wild rice cooked in the risotto style. There is a difference, however, in the way that I make wild rice risotto. Because it is very difficult to get wild rice to be creamy, most recipes just use Arborio rice and mix it with wild rice. I have been able to make wild rice risotto without any Arborio rice, and make it to any degree of combination of creaminess and al dente quality. I have always been interested in the manipulation of food textures. Likewise in the making of the chicken, I have tried to resolve the dilemma of how to cook chicken to ideal meat temperature (texture) throughout with no overcooking or undercooking, regardless of how thick or thin the meat is, and still mange to get the skin actually crispy. I mean Ã¢ÂÂPeking duckÃ¢ÂÂ skin kind of crackling crispy. I am always amused by all the TV cooking shows by famous chefs. They canÃ¢ÂÂt seem to know the difference between browned skin and crispy skin. The sous vide method can get the meat 100% perfect, but the skin is a problem. So many just peel off the skin and fry the skin separately and use meat glue to glue the skin back on the sous vided chicken. By the optimization of balance of exact temperature and timing, as you can see, the chicken is 150F juicy cooked and the skin is crispy and practically grease-less and still attached on the sous vided chicken. dcarch

I didn't comment on your other posts after I saw the "nasty turn" it was taking. It sounds like you are very strong and above those who were so nasty to you. I hope you have a good Christmas dispite the financial problems. Keeping your family safe and together is the most important part and I bet the kids will look back on this time in years to come and remember the love you put towards making this a good Christmas for them.

You go girl! Keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you fall over, don't be shy to ask for help to mentally overcome your challenges (you've got my details)and get back up, don't look back and put another foot down. Don't dwell on mistakes but dwell on the moment of walking forward. Don't beat yourself up, let go and move on.

If it gets too much again - get the crayons out and enjoy your children. They have a wonderful gift of bringing smiles.

I am pleased you are still moving forward.

KT is a public forum. Once a topic is at the table the discussion takes on it's own life. Just know there are many who have walked in your shoes and continue to walk forward. I am in those shoes myself.

Stacie, I don't post here often, nor do I make it in on a regular basis either. I was here when the KT first started and for many years. It went from free to paid and back to free. Around the time I left for a while there were a lot of scams, fighting and nasty people. That is the main reason I left. The enjoyment I got from the KT was gone. I do remember you and your daughter being born.
Not all the KTers are untrusting Stacie.

I think most of us have been on the end of unkind remarks. It is so easy to post something about someone you have never bet or probably never will.
That is why some have left over the years.
You just keep posting. As long as a person shares, regardless on how much they have or don't have they will continue to feel so good and good will come to them. You have 4 great kids and it looks like a good place to play with rocks, dirt and now all you need it water! My kids loved playing with those items.

All I have to say to you, is that I hope that none of you will ever be in my situation, and that if you are then you are attacked and doubted just as I have been.

You know, when I read a line like this coming from someone who is spirtual, it reinforces the reasons why I don't go to church or believe in joining a club of one sort or another to believe in God. Would Jesus say the same thing? No.

In the meantime, I'm happy that things are turning out well for you.

It seems no matter what the forum, there are those who have nothing but negative comments.

I've gotten to the point when I post I just skip over the negative ones as it's not worth reading them. I can get plenty of negativity elsewhere and don't need it here.

My favorites are those who chime in with "Get over yourself; you need thicker skin" etc.

Your attitude is great and you'll have a great Christmas in spite of the negativity you might get.

.Oneyear my sister had a brain anyerism.She lost her job,I called the red cross and said they have no money for Christmas and shes in the hospital,I dont know what she got in all but she did get 2 bags of groceries.

Stacie, you have a survivor's attitude and that is what it takes to get by in this world today! You are teaching you children terrific values by showing them what Christmas means. Giving to those less fortunate when you are struggling yourself is a wonderful lesson. Good for you.

Disregard the unkind comments, just let them roll off your back. You will be the bigger person for it. I'm struggling with a health issue and as one of my cyber friends has told me, This is not a sprint, it is a marathon....one foot in front of the other.

I haven't been here for quite some time so haven't read your previous posting re: economic struggles. Sounds to me like you've got it together & are doing great. The kids won't care their new cars cost a dollar OR the coats, etc came from Goodwill. They WILL remember they fun they had & they were warm & loved.

A friend, now deceased, told me several times of a Christmas when their 5 were small. No funds, etc. Someone gave them a tree - the largest they ever had. Parents bought necessities .. toothbrushes, combs, gloves, etc. and wrapped each item & placed some on the tree. When the kids were grown & parents, every Christmas they got together, THAT was the Christmas they all remembered with love. The same will be true of your kids.

So for those who say they don't believe in going to church or that those of who do shouldn't have problems or wish only good things for others, it's sad. Ignore them.

Love those little ones, build the memories. Those are gifts money cannot buy & will last a lifetime!

I agree,, don't apologize to the naysayers...there are differnces of opinions and thoughts on all the boards.. and there will always be pessimists with crab apple faces to contend with.

When I first re-introduced myself back here at KT after being away for several years, one poster actually had the unmitigated gall to say on another board that she "couldn't understand why I even bothered to come back because EVERYBODY here at KT hates me anyway."

So, you see you are not alone... most everyone here has been under fire from a bully squad of one sort or another ... Just consider the source and move on. And for heaven's sake Tracie, don't let them get you down.
