The Kitchen Table

Well, he's a Sweetie, but

I'm going to kill DD's current boyfriend.

They're coming for breakfast tomorrow, so I got him a small gift (couple of casserole dishes--since I know he needs them) and a stocking full of inexpensive little things.

Then tonight, just as DH and I were sitting down to a late dinner, because I was in the midst of my Christmas dessert baking, DD calls and demands, "What did you spend on (BF's) gift?" Was hesitant to answer--I hate when people ask that question. But was I ever glad she did. Apparently, he spent $50 on DH and I.

Okay, so now what? I didn't really have time to run out and do more shopping. DD was on her way to buy coffee, offered to pick up a gc for him at Wawa. Fortunately, they have restaurant gc's.

The intrigue deepens. To get it to me tonight, so I could have it wrapped and with his other gifts, she claimed a girlfriend was having problems wrapping some of her gifts. (BF was at her house, wrapping his), so she tore up here with the gc. Whew!

What a great daughter, though--to realize that it would be a major embarrassment, and then to help out like that. Well, it just adds to the Christmas excitement to have that sort of thing crop up at the last minute.

And I DID get a lot of my baking and prep work done tonight. Even set the table for breakfast. Might even be able to sleep late tomorrow.

Well, my step grandaughter's SO, did not show up, last year.
I had him a little gift.
This year, did not buy him anything!
He has NOW fathered another child, now , almost 2 months old.
I have gifts for his 2 kids, and when we open presents, I'll give them to him! IF he comes. My table is set for HIM! So be it!

I wouldn't worry about the cost of the gift.You were thoughtful enough to get him something you knew he needed or wanted.Gifts are given from the heart,not the pocketbook!JMHO

Letter writing must be on the minds of lots of folks lately. This week on the CBC they played a bit of a documentary about letter writing. The main part was about how young people are sort of rebellious in wanting to write and receive letters. One girl said that she enjoyed the act of writing because when she is writing a letter she was more likely to be spontaneous where as writing on the computer or such device she would be much more likely to edit. Which I thought was funny for me its the opposite. I'm more likely to send or post quickly but for me a hand written letter gets more editing. Anyway this girl was part of a group of people who got together at a coffee shop. They would pick out thier paper envelopes and write someone a letter. Listening to some of the kids talk about the novelty of sending and getting letters brings home how much has changed. (and Iam not THat much older then these folks.) I wonder what my Grandmother would think of them, she has always sent and recieved letters to keep in touch.

OMG - I was afraid you were referring to the infamous T.O. I thought Favre would definitely hang up his cleats after last season. I'm just looking forward to SuperBowl 2014 when they finally get to go back outside and play in winter weather. I hope it's 2 cold blooded teams. I still remember watching old Viking games with Fran Tarkenton where the snow was so thick no one could see the side lines. AH the good old days!! Maire As for me - I'm still a Steeler fan.

Melanie...I went through the same thing. Foxy was sick, vet tried everything...but we both saw she was failing. I prayed that she would go quietly in her sleep, and lift that decision from me. She could barely walk. Didn't happen. She stayed in the lower level of our house (split level) where the floor was tiled, and she could look out to her beloved yard. One night, the sound of her crying woke me up. She was under our bed...had crawled up 2 flights of stairs to find me. I stayed with her until morning, I could her eyes begging me to help her go. She was ready...and so was I. I called the vet(they knew her time was near), and took her right over. That was a year ago, I still miss her....but I know I took the hard decision to relieve her of her pain. Don't second guess yourself, or let others make you doubt your decision. The communication between a beloved pet and owner is a mystery...but you have to trust it. Hugs

I understand that you wouldn't want to spend less on him than he did on you (even though I know it shouldn't matter).

DD's boyfriend will be spending Xmas morning with us and I am "hoping" he didn't buy us any gifts. He is really struggling with money right now. I do have a package (a shirt, jacket and a small bottle of colonge) under the tree for him. I don't think his own parents bought him anything. :-(

My DDs BF is in college on scholarship, he works 2 jobs, has his own apartment and I know his money is very tight. I gave him things that I know he needs, t-shirts, socks, and a winter coat. I told him not to get anything for me because I know his money is tight. He got me a lighted magnifying glass. I had mentioned a while back that I couldn't read as much as I like because it gave me eye strain even with my glasses. He got me the perfect gift. He is not who I would have picked for my daughter, but the more time I spend with him the more I like him. He is a good young man and a hard worker.

Curley Sue - Now your have me really curious: the guy is going to college on a scholarship, working 2 jobs and is obviously thoughtful enough to remember something you needed as a gift - yet he is not who you would have picked for your daughter? Do tell! (Only if you want, of course.)

Azzalea - While I know it is not the amount spent that matters, I would have felt the same as you. You raised a very considerate daughter!
