Tough one. My wife and I are seniors and have been together only 20 years. Through the years we seem to buy things that are absolutely practical. One year we each bought measuring cups for the kitchen for each other!

This year, I told the missus that she was buying me a new wonderful lens for my camera. She said OK, that I was buying her a new iPod. All done. Cards at the last minute.

Everyone has something deep in their mind that they don't let on that might make things great. Consider such pampering things as a 90 minute massage and facial. Most guys would balk, but after that first one, they go back for more.

For Valentine's Day once, the missus had a quartet of singers come and serenade me. I didn't have my camera with me, so all I have are the memories.

Make a BIG wrapped box, with several smaller boxes inside. All wrapped. And then the final would be a gift of a dinner at a place he would never consider, either super-expensive or a Sonic.

If his wrist watch is getting 'long of tooth', consider a new one. This season, there are many good choices at reasonable prices. My wife is getting me one for my birthday. We order had to order one to get the features I wanted. The stores are no longer stocking the model I like, but it is in warehouses.

Another gift: A Swiss Army Officer's Pocket Knife. These are available at sporting goods and better hardware stores. A hardware store is more likely to offer the better price.

Is your guy the handyman type? If so, look into his tool box to assess his supply of screw drivers and other tool sets. Here are some welcome tool sets:
o Screw driver sets
o Torx drivers
o Allen wrenches
o Tap and die sets (metric and inch). If he has the 'inch' set, get a metric one, and vice versa.
o Pipe thread set.
o 3/8" Electric Drill.
o Small bench grinder ( 6 to 10 inch dia wheels).
o Bench vice.
o Heavy duty work bench. (Top made of 2'' thick wood planks).
o Tool storage cabinets.
o Large tool chest.

And go out to dinner for a large juicy steak at some place like "Texas Road House", Thunder Bay", or "The Machine Shed".

You can top that off with a movie that you both can enjoy.

When you say seniors, I think we need more info. Are you active or not so much? Social, or not so much?

Does he like anything to do with computer, tablets, etc? Or does he already have them all?

My daughter bought DH a leatherman tool from Cabela's 2 years ago for Christmas. He carries it on his belt everyday. It was $50. You can get knockoffs for less than that, but this one is really nice.

Dinner out is always good for me!

Would need to know what his interests are. Does he like sports? Maybe tickets to a ball game. Does he play golf? Maybe a GPS wristwatch. Is he a handyman. Maybe a new tool box. Does he like to go to the movies. Maybe a season pass to the movie theater. Tickets to a show if you have a theater nearby. A gift certificate to his favorite restaurant. Most of us as we get older, don't need "things" so a gift certificate for a favorite activity would be great.

Yes, it would help if we had more information.

One suggestion is to take him out. Live music is always wonderful if he would enjoy that. Concert tickets or a jazz club, maybe. If not, another kind of event, or a special meal at a place where you don't normally go.

I would get tickets to something. Dh and I learned we really like plays and musicals a few years back. We went to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals "Phantom of the Opera" and "Wicked" and absolutely loved them. We've taken the kids to "A Christmas Carol", "Wizard of Oz", and a few other productions. They loved those.

If he's more into bands, you could get tickets to that. Likewise, you could do some sort of ball game. You could do professional, sports, or something like the Harlem Globetrotters. They are always fun.

Something else fun is just to have a road trip adventure. My crew loves to watch the Travel Channel with all of the food shows. Pick a unique restaurant or dive an hour or two away and drive there for lunch or dinner. Enjoy some local scenery or go window shopping.

Depending upon answers to the questions already voiced, how about arranging something that you can do together? For example, a series of ballroom dancing lessons, a wine tasting class, a cooking class for something that you've not done (such as Thai, Indian, or something like that), or a subscription to a local theater?

Painting and wine one night, just like our resident artist who takes her daughter (or is that the reverse). It just sounds like fun and relaxing.

There's an ad in our local paper, touting the perfect gift for "The Man Who Has Everything". It's a garage with room for 12 cars, complete with a car washing area and a kitchen with *two refrigerators*. (I don't know if the giver would be expected to pay the RE taxes.)

My DH and I don't 'do' gifts. We each get what we want/need throughout the year. What my DH treasures, though, is a beautiful card expressing my love and appreciation. After fifty years of marriage, he's running out of room for all the cards he has saved.

I believe that men are at least as sentimental as women. It's just hidden under that hard shell they are expected to project.

Does his family live nearby? If so maybe plan a dinner party out with his children and grands. If not maybe tickets to go visit.
Or maybe a Christmas party, but invite his former co-workers only.
Was he in the military? - how about a reunion with his mates?

Time with friends and family is what I cherish the most.

Gifts become trinkets for me and lose their meaning after a while.

Buy him something on groupon or living social. Maybe a local nature excursion-they are listed all the time-boat tours down local waterways, etc. A gift card to a restaurant you haven't been to. You can check Yelp for reviews of local restaurants. Give him a coupon for a 'surpass' outing and take him to a museum you haven't been to. The nice thing about these ideas are the will be nice memories, not 'things' around your house.

I gave this to my hubster last year...He says it is the nicest gift I've ever given him...it came with a video of Jon Provost signing it for him...it hangs in our bedroom...I've given him framed pics of Hop A Long Cassidy as well and a model of his favorite car...totally useless gifts in my eyes but it made him smile!

What a sweet photo and it brings back memories of a very different time. My DH just watched that movie, Sunday, I think. I passed by and saw the beautiful collie.... but kept on going... too sad for me.
