Touching Garage Sale Christmas Gifts from my 7 Year Old Daughter

I was so touched and surprised by what my 7 year old daughter gave me for Christmas. You may have read my posts where my daughter and I go garage saling on Saturday mornings in the summer. It's our special time.

She bought me these two, hand-carved dogs for Christmas at a garage sale. I read my favorite book to her at bedtime this past year, Where the Red Fern Grows, and she told me the dogs reminded her of Old Dan and Little Ann in the story. I cried when she told me that!

My daughter knows I love bears (Who doesn't know? LOL), nature, and anything made from wood. She found this bear (made from Mt. St. Helen's ash) and a small, wooden bowl at one of the garage sales we went to. I never saw her buy any of this. Sneaky girl! She found the bird's nest on one of our nature walks in our woods. I love it.

Had to share my gifts. They were each wrapped in colorful, crayon-colored paper she made, using LOTS of tape! Gifts from the heart. I will treasure these gifts always. What a sweetie! Bear Hugs! Kirk

Awww....what a sweet girl. Course, she is obviously a reflection of her parents!

What precious gifts! Your daughter is obviously a very bright girl with great insight as to what makes her dad happy.

Kids are amazing and are constantly surprising us.

golddust, what a fantastic story. You've had some rough spots in your life, but sounds like you received enough loving support to make them strengthening ones. Thanks for letting us in on your wonderful uncle. I have a theory that it isn't the big gestures that make the best impact on the world, but little kindnesses and quiet expressions of affection done over the years that add up. I'm with mary_c. If you're estranged, why are you stressing over this?? I do not buy b'day gifts for my great-nephews/nieces & have had to quit doing for Christmas. And there's no way I'd ever be able to spend 35 or more per child. However, if you still feel you must do something, go the savings acct route. One g'dau is very unappreciative so I opened a savings acct for my gr-g'son for his Christmas & will add to it this year. Until g'dau gives me his SSN, his amt. is a 'sub-account' to my savings acct, & his mother cannot touch it. If left as it, when I die, the administrator of my estate can put it into an acct just for the gr-g'son. I expect to do the same with a sibling due any day. The mother, sadly, just does not appreciate gifts. This way, I can put back some for him/them to have when they turn 18. My g'dau knows about the account, but she does NOT know the $$$ nor will I tell her.

This is the year of "no presents but lots of love", and not by my choice LOL. For 11 years, I've spent the entire year trying to figure out exactly what I should get Dave for Christmas, but he just DOESN'T care what he gets..a few books, maybe a puzzle or a crossword book..he's fine..yes, I am the saddest person ever, when my "I've aced it..I KNOW what to get him, only to find turntables for the comp, weather stations he mentioned a million times, the teak shower bench that he said he'd spend cold winter nights sat upon in our brand new slate and stone shower with power jets beating him into submission (only to find he only uses it to stand his shampoo bottle on!) gifts still in their boxes, partly assembled, or just given away. The past couple of years I've given in to his wishes/wants.. and he's been happy with the books he's shopped/bought himself. I'm not, as I love the shopping/surprising/amusing little tags on/thought of you gift giving, and yes selfishly, I wish he liked doing the same as well. When we bought this house with the woodstove, I mentioned that some of the wood that I was splitting and stacking in the woodshed needed a splitting wedge..lo and behold, come Christmas morning, I received a 5lb ice cold wedge of steel..wrapped in a paper bag, and no tag, no name.. yes, I did ask for it, and he's still as happy as a pig in.. whatever ;) lol at the surprised look on my face when that was my ONE gift for the year! Guess I fooled him with my acting skills..so well that the next year I got a Lodge cast iron griddlepan to cook his steaks in for the winter times! Yes, wrapped this time in real wrapping paper and the price tag on it so I'd know how much he appreciates me!!! This year, he asked in November for my list.. I know, gasp! He's cracked it, he's figured out I like to receive AND to give. I'd secretly had books shipped by his parents from England, and a couple of neat things to surprise him, but not over whelm him. On Saturday, December 22 DH Dave went out to the garage to bring in one of the last pieces of door trim we were doing as one of my begged for gifts, and he fell in the snow on a slick of ice. He broke the ball off the top of his humerus, dislocated his shoulder blade and broke his collar bone. After surgery to pin everything to gether, locate the shoulder blade and arm bone, he's home from the hospital now. With his sling and pain meds in place, he's mostly comfortable, but he won't be able to hold the massive hardover books he so wanted, he can't drink the lovely wines and beers he bought, or do the shopping on the list he asked me for in November. He will be able to start therapy in about 2 weeks, and with at least 6 weeks off work that we can ill afford, he has lots of time to think of gifts for next year! Guess I won't be asking for door trim or a splitting wedge! I do love him..honestly! LOL Sorry for the novel! Off to shovel the snow so I can bring in a couple of bins of firewood that I split, with a great wedge!

I was just thinking of kitchen gifts. I am doing some sewing for a couple of gifts -- a phone wallet as a gift card/cash holder, a tech bag, possibly a couple of other bags. I think I'm going to make a new lanyard for my son's work ID. He had a school specific one before, but had a pretty plain one when I saw it yesterday. And I will probably be making a couple pair of PJ pants -- special fabric and extra length. Allison, I have ordered from Bouqs also. I have sent some gifts and got a couple here, including the ranunculus. I really enjoyed those and they lasted longer than I expected. I have not made full use of the other discounts though.

The apple didn't fall far from the tree there! What cool gifts that she put a lot of thought and love into! And an extra bonus was she was incredibly frugal in the process. I like all the gifts but think those dogs are awesome. Great job!

Kirk, Those gifts are just precious. However I am not supprised! Her gifts to you were the result of the loving, sensitive and respectful relationship that you and Carol have shared with not only each other but with your family as well. She is being taught a lesson by her parents that will take her through life on the road to happiness and success. Life is all about act and react. How great she is recycling! Last year my son and wife got me a rusty bird bath and feeder. I told them to find something used to give me as I knew they didn't have alot of money. I loved.it.My elderly dad sanded it and cherished being useful again.I painted them a soft green and LOVE them. People need to realize NEW is NOT a neccessity!

She is a wonderful girl! It's great that she is being sneaky like you! :-) Elfkins take on the characteristics of their parents, for sure! And, how amazing that she is already thinking about Christmas! Those hounddogs sure do remind me of those dogs too!
Happy time spending Garagae Saling with your kids! MIne gripe and complain, but that may be because they are young and BOYS! :-)

Kirk, his wonderful wife Carol, and those two precious children...Olivia and little Benjamin...are truly blessings to us here on GJ. Its such fun watching Ben grow from a baby to a toddler, and Olivia is as delightful as her daddy. I'm glad you found this old post and "met" her.
