Oh dear, this is too bad. Gratefully, there is a surgery that can be done to help you. You don't have a lot of choice here, do you? So sorry about the car accident; that was the last thing you needed for your poor knee. This is discouraging. Keep us posted on how it goes. Best wishes.

Lori- I have every confidence that you will do just fine. I'm not minimizing what you're feeling, knee replacement surgery is a big step and since you've done it once and done so well I'm sure you'll be able to come through this one too.

And in a year or so I'll be having both of my knees done. I'm putting it off until my husband retires. I'm remember your words describing how confident you felt after your first surgery when my time comes.

Lori, I remember your concerns after that car accident and how the doctors just blew you off. Hmmmph. They should have listened to you more. Maybe they could have prevented this.

And even if you did cry all the time, which I know you won't, I wouldn't think you were a boob. I KNOW how tough you are, so if you're crying, it's because you're in more pain than anyone should be. Hopefully, they'll control all that for you! Keep us posted, Lori. Get someone to give a report on you to us, OK?

I remember when you had that surgery and I remember the accident too. I'm so sorry that happened, I'd be upset and worried about surgery too. It sounds like you're in very good hands though, so hopefully it will go very smoothly and you'll get a good result like the last time.

Argh...I just knew when I saw the post that it had to do with that car accident!!! And you were so happy when you had the first surgery. Just remember the LONG TERM goal of how your knee will feel. Lori, I am sending good thoughts your way for your upcoming surgery. So very sorry that you have to go through all of this a second time. My DH is getting ready to have his right knee replaced, after having his left knee done several years ago. From everything we have been told, it sounds as if the surgery is a lot easier than before.

Oh, Lori, what an ordeal! But you're a strong western gal, and we have as much faith in you as you have in your doctors. (And you know you can always cry here. We have tissues.)

I know you will bounce back better than ever. Just remember how much better you felt after the first replacement. It's just that you know what the process is now. But I'm sure with your fortitude, you will be up and taking care of business before you know it!

What IS it about those freeways? Dear friends whose two adult children live in Northern CA tell us both kids have been rear-ended MANY times; their DD has on-going back problems because of one incident -- aggravated by the second incident. She's only mid-30's.

I can sympathize about having 'bad bones' (arthritis, two hip replacements). Here's hoping that your surgery and recovery are not as difficult as you anticipate -- maybe just *longer*, but not so painful. Good on you for prepping as best you can with the weight loss and strengthing exercises! That's going to pay off for you.

I pray that all goes VERY smoothly, is totally successful, and your recovery is quick and painfree.

Having gone through a second knee replacement with a friend, it may well be, that you'll do much better with this second surgery. You now know what to expect, somewhat. The unknown, is stressfull in itself.
Its not something to look forward to, but you have good Dr.s, and I'll bet you do better this time.

Lori, I too, remember the past surgery and accident. I'm shocked that it has been that long since all that happened.

I understand how hard it is to be going into a second surgery. I have had open heart surgery twice, and I when into the first one feeling very confident and glad to have all that fixed up, --- BUT the second time, I knew what I was getting into! I ended up in the hospital a couple days early -- for hyperventilation! I guess I can laugh at myself now!

When ever you start thinking about the surgery, just remember how wonderful your leg was before the accident, and look forward to that again.

BTW did you do anything special (that would be other than diet and exercize) to loose that 25#? That is a nice chunk of extra. You must be feeling much better and I bet you look great!

Hope everything goes perfectly during your surgery and recouperation.

Sorry you have to go through that again,having been there,done that i know how painful it is,but well worth it in the end.I had mine done last year and to see me walk,you'd never know i had had a problem.I also had a very good dr,who promised me he would do a good job.As he said after all i'd be a walking advertisment for him.LOL He also had a terrific bedside manner and was cute as well~~~~~~~~~too young for me though!!! LOL,LOL.

First, congratulations on the weight loss. That's awesome! Sorry you have to go through the surgery and rehab again, but if you have to go through it, at least it's too cold to be outside this time of year anyway. Stock up on some good videos and books and snuggle up with a blanky and hot chocolate. I'll be keeping you in my prayers.

P.S. It's okay to cry if you feel the need. Who knows, maybe you won't! (Fingers crossed for that!)

Honestly!

Since I have no choice in the matter (well, I do have a choice: stop doing anything that requires the use of my left leg.....) I might as well have a good attitude. Knowing I can come here for support means a great deal!

In answer to the questions...I hope I don't miss any!...

Fear and terror is how I lost the weight.
Truly.
See, the joint works fine. The weakness, pain and swelling is in the femor and the tibia. Any exertion created problems. My leg hurt while I was sleeping.
When I started feeling the prongs of the joint moving around is when I got serious about weight loss. Basically I cut out the sweets and used portion control. If I wanted to have a dessert, I didn't eat bread or potatoes with the meal. I pretty much ate what I wanted but the portions were very very small. Eating a high protein breakfast each day kept me from snacking. Two months of physical therapy helped immensely and now I am in pretty good shape. I blew it the last week what with the holiday sweets and treats but they are all gone now.

Insurance: My insurance will pay for the second surgery. However, everything involved in this process is in subrogation. If you recall, immediately after the accident my surgeon's PA read the radiation scan and scheduled a knee revision for the following month but I could not get into the see the surgeon for another ten days. During that ten days I got calls from every insurance company involved, including our health insurance, wanting to record or conversations and asking me to sign documents. This is when I sought the advice of an attorney. I told the surgeon I could not agree to another surgery until I knew the bills would be paid which is when he said the knee was not injured and told me to carry on with normal activities and come back in a year.
Basically I have turned everything over to an attorney. The last time we spoke he mentioned a settlement. I told him for now all I was concerned about is the bills got paid. You see, there is still over three thousand dollars of medical bills incurred immediately after the accident that have not been paid. For now I just want to be able to walk again and stay out of the poor house.

As some of you pointed out this time around I know what to expect and can prepare. Thank you for putting this into perspective for me. The surgeon says I will spend at least three days in the hospital for physical therapy. I spent less that 24 hours in the hospital the first time around which horrified my current doctor. He said he requred more time to observe and monitor my progress before letting me get over a hundred miles away from him.
The first time I was told I couldn't go home until I learned how to use crutches. Considering I've spent a LOT of time on crutches in my life (this is the twelve surgery on this leg since I was a kid) I proved in a hurry I was crutch-competent. LOL I got in the room at 8 o'clock at night and was on my way home by 8:30 the next morning.
I came home with a staph infection (something the surgeon was not very concerned about; they referred me to our family doctor for treatment) which set me back considerably in my recovery.

Apparently my current knee can't be re-used.
It will have to replaced.
I wonder if they will let me keep it?

This leg has been broken, set, rebroken and reset and the knee rebuilt once and I have the hardware from each episode. I'd like to have the knee to add to my collection. LOL How morbid is that?
