The traditional rug hooking I do uses old wool clothes cut into 1/8" strips (I have a manual cutter that cuts a few at a time). Burlap (in this case linen burlap) is put on a frame, and the strip of wool is held underneath in my left hand. Holding a hook (like a crochet hook with a wooden handle) in my right hand, I pull little loops of the wool up to the front of the backing.

Sometimes I dye wool to get a color I like, but mostly I use as-is wool, washed in hot water and dried in the dryer. For the Santa, the only wool I dyed was the light apricot used for the face. I dyed it to match a cat in an earlier project.

It isn't hard at all, once you get the feel of it. Some more skilled rug hookers do a lot of fine shading, while others use wider strips and achieve a much more primitive look.

Um . . . great idea, Jasdip, but hooking is a seasonal activity for me. Much as I love it, I find wool unpleasant to work with in the heat of summer. Besides, I'm outside gardening. :-)

The more the merrier, Glenda! Those are so cute--how are they made?

I wrap enough yarn around two fingers 10 times. Than I take a plastic ???knitting needle and go around the two fingers to make the wreath, and when finished, take the needle and yarn into couple of the wrapped yarn then cut and make the bow.

I made 250 one year for our live Christmas tree.

Now I just make them as pin gifts

He's fabulous, Susan and I think you'd have to be insane to make 2 dozen of those, what a lot of work! I love his rich colors and shape, you did a wonderful job on him.

We used to have a girl in our group that hooked, in fact her family had the rug hooking shop here in town, I think it was called Mountain Country Crafts. They had neat stuff and I knew where to go get wool for my projects!
