Out of curiosity, where in upstate NY? I visited somebody at Cornell and it's beautiful there. How much shade? I think Kentucky bluegrass (KBG) is probably the best choice for upstate New York in sunny areas. For shady areas, a fine fescue mix would be better. If you have a mixture of sun and shade, you'll probably want to plant KBG in the sunny areas and transition to a mixture of KBG and fine fescue and then all fine fescue in the shade. If you google "Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Selections" you'll find a variety of resources to pick good cultivars. I don't think there are as many choices for fine fescues. Some people have reported good results with the Bonny Dunes mixture.

Mike, The terms "Dormant" and Evergreen" refer to foliage habit. The leaves of dormant daylilies die completely back during the winter. Evergreen daylilies retain their foliage throughout the year. They continue to produce new leaves and remain green all year in mild climates. Up north here the foliage dies back because of the cold temperatures, but if the plant is hardy, the crown will survive, but sometimes has to be mulched. Then you have the semi-evergreen, which can behave like an evergreen in the South, or behave like a dormant if grown in the North. Julie

Patience. Sugar Snap has a fairly long DTM and if you planted in March should be a June bearer. If your plants are healthy you should be on schedule. Nitrogen will retard bloom so make sure you are not adding any nitogen sources to your potting soil. Phosphate will enhance blooming so you could use something like Bloom Booster in a pinch but I think you will be fine.

I do what abnorm does. If they don't snap easily, then they probably need a bit more time. In that case(since I just injured it a bit), I snip at the Y. Chinense varieties sometimes need some snipping help. My Thais definitely needed scissors though. Otherwise the whole cluster of pods and foliage would come off. Kevin
