Sounds to me like your "soil" is solid clay - many new home developments have that, because they strip whatever top soil there may have been, and what is left is clay - pure enough to make pots out of! Our native soil here in the SF Bay area is like that in many places. Luckily for me, my yard has been gardened for 106 years, so we have a good layer of soil - maybe 18 inches. However, if you dig in obscure corners, like right next to the foundation - clay, pure and simple. What is getting on your dogs feet would be called "slip" in a potter's workshop! I'm not aware of a ground cover that would instantly grow in the winter in solid clay, especially without a lot of work & soil amendments. If it were me, I would probably figure out how to restrict the area the dogs can get into, and then put down some gravel - that is instant. Good luck - Jackie

Thanks for the ideas! I think we are probably right that this is a physical process, and NOT a chemical one. Gee: just when I thought we stoners had only to focus on the myth that soapstone is porous and needs to be sealed...Now we have to go after that oxidation myth too. Er, well, at least we obsessed stoners do. Maybe that only means me! Where is Vicki... But I still can't quite get my brain around how this works. If I rub oil on other non porous surfaces (glass, ceramic, plastic) the color doesn't change at all. Wet ceramic doesn't look darker than dry ceramic. But if I rub oil or water on porous substances, then I see a color change. Yet soapstone is nonporous. So in what magical middle land does this stone reside where a purely topical application changes its color so dramatically? Maybe I should ask the Straight Dope guy. Supposedly there is no question he can't answer. I'll plan on doing that... Cleo: all that communing with my stone has done damage. I now have a severe case of tendonitis in my elbow!! I can't believe it. I am constantly reminded of that infamous Seinfeld episode, The Contest. Remember the hand model whose hands got stuck in a permanent claw shape from...er...overuse?? ;-) Francy

Just wanted to post an update photo of my little plant. The three new rosettes have gotten a bit bigger and are actually starting to look more like compact rosettes. They also each seem to be putting out some air roots. The mother plant's leaves are looking a little worse for wear :) I also noticed that the mother plant seems to be putting out two new leaves in between a few of the old ones. I know it will still be a while before I can figure out the ID (and I may never know!), but it is looking a bit like green goddess as Lisa suggested above. When I was searching green goddess the other night, an image of another plant came up whose little rosettes look similar to mine--though this may be just because they are so young. I think I'd choose one pattern to use as a runner between the 2 doors from edge to edge and matching mats wherever you want them in the kitchen. Do you have absorbent mats outside each door as well? The main goal is to catch all the dirt and protect the wood.

Ha Ha Thanks everyone! I was trying to think of something creative!

I have one DD, Olivia. She will be exactly 3 1/2 when new baby is born. We lost our first one when I was farther along then most (17ish weeks) so I tend to keep it quiet until we pass that mark. Next week, I will be 5 months. Seems like time is going fast!! Exciting but scary too!

We have told DD, who seemed to understand at first, patting my tummy, telling me it was a brother. Now when we mention it, she says NOOO and gets me one of her baby dolls and tells me this is the baby. Sometimes she throws her dolls down the stairs to show me. Hopefully that's a phase! LOL

With Olivia, we didn't find out the sex, which was fun, but I think this time around we will find out, mainly to help DD (and us) prepare for the new baby a little better. I'm worried about how she will deal with it, but I'm going to stay positive that she'll be my little helper and love the baby. I believe we can find out a week from today at the next ultrasound. We might try to get the doc to write it down, seal it up and open the envelope on Christmas Day. (How I'm going to stop snooping though is beyond me??) I think boy, but DH is CONVINCED it's a girl again.

The first few months were kind of rough. I felt pretty yucky in the morning and then at dinnertime had NO appetite for anything! DH had to fend for himself for a while and grocery shopping was fun-I couldn't even think about certain aisles! lol The past few weeks I am feeling better, so hopefully that's past, now I can brush my teeth without gagging!! YEA!!

Oh, congratulations!!! That is so exciting, and a great way to break the news to us!

Just keep telling Olivia how important and special it is to be a big sister -- it's so important that not every girl gets to be a big sister.
