Any one else go shopping -little cold and stores full

Went to finish ( I think) my shopping and the mall was packed and lots of people buying. Temp was 3 above all day and lots of snow, but main roads clear.

We were out all day yesterday, looking for new furniture for the family room. I got a very generous gift from my boss, it will pay for the furniture so we went shopping.

I wasn't Christmas shopping, just grocery shopping and I noticed terrible traffic this past Saturday ! Lots of cars, the intersections were jammed, impossible to make left turns. Happens every December! My shopping, wrapping,decorating and cards are all done.

"I don't think it has one iota to do with "the Home Depot Reputation" or the "Lowes Reputation" at all. Or Talbots.." I think it's pretty clear that there are company/store initiatives and policies driving the behavior of the staff at some stores. You will find each store has its own personality, same phrases repeated, same routine each visit, a fairly consistent experience. Large companies often have a company motto to drive the culture and a CS initiative in place. I don't go to department stores often anymore but also notice they don't have staff around anymore like in the old days. It's a real hunt, lol. And agree, the constant interruptions at some places that have their CS vamped up can really be annoying. By the time I've left, I feel like I've been bombarded by sales people. Now Talbots can be unpleasant. I know more than one person who won't go in any more. Sounds like it hasn't changed. But what I really don't understand, is some of these people who need these jobs, why don't they take an interest in what they're doing? Instead of standing around or whatever, get to know your products. Some of them have been there long enough to have done some research, even if it's their own on-the-job or at home training. They guy in Appliances has been there for years, internet access in front of him, and he still doesn't know product features.

My experience is that I told my contractors upfront that I wanted to buy my appliances, sink, fixtures, tile, and lighting myself. They were fine with that because we decided it upfront, I was very specific, and there was no waffling on my part (i.e., like "um, OK, some of the stuff I want to buy, and some you should buy, OK?"). Contractors HATE uncertainty, whether it's delivery time, lack of specifications, or the scope of work of what they're to be doing. So, if they can control those things, they can control costs and work time. So, the contractor steering you to favored suppliers, or having the contractor himself make those purchases gives him that control over how smoothly the entire project will go. If you feel confident in your abilities to source, purchase, and oversee fixtures and materials, you should do it, but you must be very specific with your contractor about it, and put it in writing in the Scope of Work. If you think you may be uncertain, or end up waffling, or not making decisions, you should go with your contractor's suggestions. BTW, my electrician was actually relieved I was to buy all the lighting, receptacles and switches. He didn't like dealing with that stuff, and having to sort out part numbers, lead times, and the like. He said "I'm an electrician, not a parts salesman".

"if you buy a Delta Faucet at HD, it's the same exact faucet you get at Ferguson or Amazon or anywhere so shopping at restrictive and often more expensive stores to placate your contractor is saving him money not you. " This is simply not true. Read aidan_m 's post. Specifically... "Nobody can ever convince me that the plastic faucet and the brass faucet are the same thing. The box and packaging look different. The plastic one says "Manufactured by ______ for _____ box store" The real one just has the name brand and model number. Once out of the box, both look identical. But when you pick them up, one is heavy brass, the other is light plastic. The finish on the plastic looks just like the finish on the metal. " I've dealt with it myself and it isn't just plumbing fixtures. "I've gotten better lumber from HD by hand selecting boards then when I ordered from 84 lumber " 84 is a small step above HD.

Relax everyone. Take a deep breath. It doesn't need to be done in a day. The best rooms and houses evolve over time and are a continuing journey. Only on HGTV does everything have to be done before you move in. The best thing is to find something with color you love. For me in both my condo I just sold and in the house I'm hoping to build (don't ask!), I chose my busy granite first and everything in terms of color will work from that. It may be a wallpaper you love, a fabric, a vase with the colors you love, a rug, a favorite chair, or even a painting. Then just choose pieces you LOVE. If you choose what you love, it will all work together.

I am done with Christmas shopping and DH made a quick run to our local supermarket this morning.
I am so glad I got things done early because we are having massive amounts of rain and there is much flooding and mudslides.
We have had over 7 inches of rain in the past 24 hours....over a 3rd of our normal yearly rainful.
More rain expected for the next 5 days.

Unfortunately I don't have a choice ....I have to go to finish up.

My feet have been hurting so bad for the past two or three weeks that somedays I can hardly walk.

I'm going to have to "tuff-up" today and try to finish up...Those who are shorted will get cash...That's just the way it's going to have to be this year...

Haven't done too much shopping, but unfortunately, I still have to drive through the most congested shopping area every day--my aunt is in an assisted living facility, on hospice, right in the middle of our area's busiest shopping community, so whether or not I'm buying, I'm driving through that mess.
