Family Game Suggestions

I am hoping to find a game suitable for my Niece her DH and their two boys aged 3 and 6. Any suggestions for something they can all enjoy together. I thought about Twister but not sure. For anyone that has small children could you please make a suggestion? Thanks! Just trying to stay away from electronics and they have so many other toys, I thought this might be fun to play as a family.

Minnesotawatchermom, I think she changed her name, and is now working with me.........sigh Rick, since I brought him to the dance, Im not sure if I technically qualify to participate in the naming ceremony; but a name does come to mind. When my younger brother was younger.....my Polish grandpa used to have a nickname for him. I'm not sure how to spell it, but here it is the way it sounds: my-stir klep-ka. This year I am making a I-Spy game (large soda bottle filled with trinkets and table sale). I'll give each person a minute in a private area and they'll write down whatever they 'spy'. A few things will be worth more points if they find them. In the past I've done the following: The left/right game (instructions easily found on the internet). Card toss - take 10 to 15 assorted sized Christmas cards and let each player toss them towards a laundry basket about 7 to 10 feet away. Don't let anyone bend the cards. Harder than it looks to get the cards into the basket. Famous people game - Find pictures of famous people (including cartoon characters like Rudolph), print them all out on one sheet then make copies for each player. Give them about 5 minutes to see how many they get right. Stocking game - fill a stocking with small household items, tie the top and have players write down what they can feel.

You mentioned cooking food. That makes your post appropriate. :) Food games...make a picture out of your crudités, make a mashed potato snowman, etc. For the kids: make cards with the names of vegetables that are commonly eaten but they might not know, like kohlrabi. Charades acting out the dishes on the table (keep aside the "turkey" one for one of the littlest kids). Regular charades just need to be titles/names that everybody knows, so nothing too kid only or adult only. Names: Mickey Mouse, The President, Beyoncé, Cookie Monster. Titles: Goodnight Moon, Beauty and the Beast, Spongebob Squarepants, Star Wars. Those would work for Charades or a version of Pictionary. Another version is where you just talk and gesture about the name/title without saying any of the words--like password, but without the rules that are sometimes hard for younger children. Something people groan at, but actually get into doing, is guessing how many things in a jar. This can be a pain to set up because you have to count ahead of time. You can also make or buy jars with different small items in them, suspended in mineral oil or water and glycerine (find a snowglobe recipe and add more glycerine if it needs to be thicker), plus lots of glitter beads and other filler. People either have to find particular items, or have a minute to write down as many as they can find. Plus, simple board games, like Candyland and Pachisi can turn into raucous good fun if they're played fast by a bunch of people, and even more so if they're teams. The games where you have to stop and read something and make a decision aren't great for large groups because people get bored waiting for their turns. Yacht is another game that can be played in a large group of all ages. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

NOT Twister! Kids a bit young, most parents don't want to play. That game is for a group of pre-teens.

Uno, Parcheesi, Yahtzee - those will maybe work for the older child.

But there is a vast age difference between 3 and 6. The skills are too far apart for most games to be appropriate for both.

Check out Pictureka. It is a sort of "I Spy" type game. We only played it at someone else's house once with a group of 6 yo's, but I think it has different instructions for different age levels.

My kids love the Connect 4x4. It's sort of like Tic Tc Toe, but four people get to play. It says it's for 8-14 years, but my 6 and 7 yo both love it.

I've done "Bingo" at pre-K parties. You can get shapes and color cards instead of numbers and letters. It seems all age groups like it.

LCR is an easy game for the whole family. I found mine at a hobby store but it might be at Target or Wallmart too. LCR (Left center right) - Rules
(copy and paste)
LCR requires three specially marked dice and a handful of chips (quarters can stand in for the chips). Each player begins with three chips. The players determine who is to roll first. The six-sided dice are marked with the following letters, each on one side of the dice L, C, and R. The other 3 sides of each dice are marked with dots.

The first player rolls three dice. He or she passes a chip either to the left, to the right or to the center pot, depending on the roll of the dice. If any dots are rolled, the player retains his chip for that die. The next player to the left then rolls 3 dice, one die for each chip he possesses, up to three chips. This player then passes chips as directed by the roll. If he should have less than three chips, he only rolls as many dice as he has chips. If he has no chips, he is not out of the game. He simply does NOT roll. Should the person to either side of him be required to pass him a chip, then he again has a chance to win the game and must roll again when his turn comes around.

The roll passes in this manner around and around the table until only one player has chips. The last person having chips wins the game. She is not required to roll the dice.
It doesn't take long to play and win. Fun to play over and over.

Monopoly Junior. It uses a smaller board and paper money in 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s. There are cards that have picture clues as well as short text. The 3 y/o could play with adult help, but certainly not alone. He would have fun if he could be on a parent's "team" b/c you never know if his attention span will make it, though the game can be played in 20 minutes. It is perfect for K-1st grade reading and math skills. Kids that age can read the cards without help, they have to add single digits to pay, subtract them to make change. It's is the perfect board game for a family with that age children. The standard theme is an amusement park ("buy" the ferris wheel for example, put your ticket booth on it, then other pay you to ride when they land on it). But they also make other variations, we have a Disney princess version from when DD was that age.

Of all the "junior" versions of regular board games, Monopoly gets the highest rating from me. There is also a junior Scrabble, which would be great for the 6 y/o, but the 3 y/o not so much. The junior Clue game, I think, is entirely too complicated to be any fun. It takes longer to set up than it does to play.

Connect Four is a good suggestion.
A dominoes game that uses pictures instead of the dots.
Bingo with numbers or pictures.
Cootie (but it does have a lot of small pieces, depends on if that is a young 3 or older 3)

I was going to suggest LCR...(left, center, right). It is a fun game that our travel club plays frequently with as many as 15-20 players. Toys-R-Us said it was the hottest game request and that they couldn't even order it. Found it at Barnes and Noble. I have hopes that it will move quickly for our autistic teenager (keeping him focused) and be a good family game. I'm glad Toni posted the rules, as I forget until playing. Nanny
