What Do You Do for Your Hairdresser?

At Christmas that is. I have a new hairdresser...he is the owner of the shop. I do tip him 20% when I go even though it use to be you didn't tip the owner. I think that's changed. My last hairdresser was pretty inexpensive and I would give him the cost of a perm as a tip at Christmastime even though I was just getting a cut. This hairdresser is much more expensive. Do you usually give your hairdresser a cash gift or do you buy him/her a gift?

I tip the person that does my hair around 15-20% no gifts.

Nothing extra for Christmas. I have two hairdressers - one who colors, one who cuts. They're both very expensive in my opinion and I see them very regularly so as far as I'm concerned I've already blown my hairdresser budget long before Christmas.

One year I finally said, "To heck with it" and called the electrician to come and put an outlet at the end of the mantle. What little damage he did to the drywall, I patched and painted over. Not an expense one wants to have in the month of December, but since then, every Christmas I smile as I plug things in. Now, more to your question: Sometimes I want tiny lights down the center of my table. I had a new leaf cut out of MDF and had a big hole drilled in the center. I attached a surge protector to the underside. From the surge protector, I run an extension cord under the table and down the table leg. I tried and tried to think of something that could camouflage the extension cord from the bottom of the leg to the wall outlet. I came up with NOTHING. So, instead of trying to hide it, I took the cardboard roll that holds Christmas wrapping paper (sort of a very long toilet paper roll) and threaded the extension cord through. Then I wrapped Christmas paper around the roll and tied off the ends with ribbon, letting the extra paper at each end flair out. Now, instead of trying to hide it, I purposely bring attention to the cord - which I think is a good thing, as I know people won't be tripping on the way to the buffet table. P.S. Of course, I have to put a large button hole in the center of my table cloth, but if I don't use lights, I always have some sort of centerpiece that sits on top of the buttonhole.

I remember when the afro was popular and I asked my Mom if I could have one and she said no. I was in the 7th grade and thought how mean. Well when I was a freshman(14) in high school, I asked again and she told me that I could do it IF I was responsible about it and kept it neat and always looked presentable. I remember it as one of my first big decisions and I was so proud of the fact that she had enough faith in me that I would do the right thing and I did. Fast forward a gazillion years later and my D son asked if he could grow his hair out so that he could wear it braided. At the time he was 14 and I remembered the encounters with my Mom and I said the same thing to him. My hubby immediately said no and we had a family meeting and we made it clear that if he didn't take care of his hair AND save up the money to pay for getting it braided himself, then it would be cut off. Well my son is now almost 22 with hair below his shoulders and he is very responsible about taking care of his hair. Actually he is almost obsessed about it :-) That was one of the first real mature decisions for him, just like it was for me. I think depending on the maturity level of the kid, 14 is not too young to start experimenting with hair. As long as it is made clear to the kid what the potential ramifications are, then I think it is fine. I think we as adults have to remember what it is like to be that age and struggle with individuality vs what's popular and how hard it can be for teenagers. It is just hair and it will grow back. I have had every imaginable hairstyle under the sun,afro, long, short, asymmetrical, mullet and braids. Each style represented me during a particular period and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do different things. We have to support, be honest but let them discover who they are. Oh yeah one other thing, as soon as my son started growing facial hair, he loved it and I hated it. He would let it grow long and I would beg for him to please shave and my hubby gently reminded ME about letting him express his individuality :-) To me he looked like Grizzly Adams but to my son it made him look older. Ughh.... So the running joke between us was that I would call him Grizzly but if he wanted to look like a mountaim man, that was his choice. Again fast forward a few years and he has a very nice goatee that is now well manicured and he looks great. I remembered my own experience and let him be and he eventually grew out of the Grizzly Adams look. Thank goodness!

What do you line your drawers with? What do you do for smells?

Sachets just add one stink to another. Clean the drawers with vodka after your stain has cured in. Sitting in the garage made them smell worse as they were not getting use or air circulation. Heat breeds bacteria, which breeds stink, which is what happens when you do not use something and it sits in an unairconditioned environment. Vodka will kill the bacteria. Lots of alcohol in vodka. Use the cheapest brand money can buy and clean your drawers with it a week or so after your stain has cured in. You might have to repeat it in the warm weather. Just like houses that are not occupied, the bathroom begins to smell like the toilet was never flushed, drawers will have bacteria build up and that is where the odor arises. It's called incubation. You are growing a culture, sotaspeak.

I've been the victim of three crimes - all preventable. 1.) Being assaulted by a man while walking with a friend down a dark street to an unlit parking lot after Fiesta in San Antonio around 2am. I was 19 and clueless. We were more mentally harmed than physically. 2.) My brand new '98 Thunderbird was broken into while parked on the street in front of my house. It was locked but I should have parked in the driveway and not under the shadow of a large tree to the side of the house. 3.) My sister and I were at a salon in a mall and I was getting my hair cut while she was waiting. A guy with a backpack sat next to her and secretly fished her wallet out of her purse. I had just paid her a few hundred dollars because she was going to stay with me for the summer, babysitting my son. Of course her purse was on the floor, totally laid open with her wallet in plain site. The things I do to keep myself safe: -keep all doors locked all the time - security system - keep lights on in the house (even at night) and have motion sensor flood lights on the exterior - big dog who is encouraged to bark - TV stays on when not at home - reporting suspicious activity - being aware of my surroundings and not putting myself in precarious situations

My neighbor is a hairdresser. She was complaining that people give her gifts because THEY like to shop....and think she would say for instance............look cute in that little designer skirt(she only wears jeans and a white T-shirt)......she says she only wants money....then she can buy what she wants. She talks about how hard it is to return things without a receipt....

I usually give cash, but this year I have a new hairdresser. She is a wonderful girl, who is a single mother, and she is strapped for cash. I may give her cash + movie tickets for her and her boys.

Mine likes Starbucks - says she needs a caffeine boost in the afternoons so I give her a gift certificate and add some of their VIA, which she keeps in her cabinet at work.

I buy her a nice gift and also for the other 2 hairdressers in the salon, they bring magazines for me to read and one always brings me a cup of coffee.

Absolutely nothing. She's lucky to get a tip when she does my hair. Why would I buy her a Christmas gift? I didn't give birth to her. She's not dating one of my boys. She has her own family to buy her gifts.

I never tipped the owner of the salon, due in part to the fact that he charged more than anyone else in the salon. As to a Christmas gift, I usually give her some sort of gift card.

They don't want a gift (and neither do your kids' teachers!).

If you wish to tip, give them cash - but only if they've been doing your hair for years, and you are really pleased with them.

Nothing, she gets a tip every time she does my hair. I think that's plenty. It's not like she's a relative.

I just met my new hair stylist......I finally found someone in my community who knows how to cut my hair.
I took him some quilting fabric for his grandmother......he was really happy.
Usually I don't give Christmas gifts to my hairdresser....mainly because I haven't gone to one on a regular basis.

Nothing - not anymore anyway. I've been going to the same hairdresser for 15 years and usually gave her a gift card to places where I knew she frequented. However one year she was complaining about another client who gave her a gift and said that she would prefer cash.

At the same time she opened her own shop and then made a point of announcing there was no reason that the owner shouldn't be tipped too. So that was it for me - I still go to her and give her a 20% tip. But that's it.

I avoid them at Christmas. LOL

Seriously, I never stick with one long enough to establish that kind of relationship. I tip 20% or so, and that's it.

LOL, I try to avoid them too. I seriously don't understand the need to give them a Christmas gift. I go WAY out of my way for patients in the office and I certainly don't expect a gift. I tip every 4 weeks; that's enough of a gift. I sound like a scrouge, don't I??

I go to a place with several hairdressers. I don't tip them at Christmas, but I'm a big tipper during the year. They have one manicurist I see every week, and I give her a card with $20 around now. I don't tip anyome else. I figure the mailman gets paid by his employer, he doesn't need an incentive from me. I tip in restaurants, but not at fast-food places. I bring cookies to my former place of employment and the hospital where I get dialysis.

We live in a small rural area and everyboby knows everybody.. My hairdresser is a girl I have known since she was born. She went to school with our kids. Sweet gal. Last year I bought her a Lands End bag ( at a killer price) and filled it with hot chocolate mix and a spiced tea mix. Also included spoons, cups and marshmellows. She loved offering it to all her ladies. This year I bought her the big coffee pot so she could keep it going. She has told me so many times how much she has loved it.. I have made a new batch of hot chocolate and spiced tea to take next week. May even bake a few cookies..

Every now and then I have a grandaughter with me and she always puts them up in the seat and trims their hair for free. She makes it a big deal for them.. They love it...

Well, I was glad to hear all the responses. The double tip sounds good. I might do that, but will for sure bring in a nicely wrapped plate of Christmas cookies. better start baking now!

I always give her a bottle of Bailey's or something like that. I love my hairdresser!

I just gave cash and a cute card to both my hairdresser (funny name, isn't it?) and my dogs' hairdresser. It was about double my usual tip. I think cash is much more appreciated than food or stuff. Just my opinion.
