Commercial baby food and the health of today's children

Following the suggestion given to me at the KT, I bought some baby food (beef and chicken) today in an effort to tempt my injured cat, Mickey, to eat. My children are grown, and even when they were little I bought very little baby food, preferring to make my own. So I haven't really checked out the supermarket offerings in a long time.

If my store is any indication, today's babies are being fed loads of fruits (many with food starch added) and sweet vegetables like sweet potatoes, squash, and carrots. In addition to a meager supply of the meats, I saw one lone jar of green beans. Everything else was sweet and starchy.

What a way to train little taste buds! I can't help thinking that the mothers who buy these foods would probably try something different if they were offered more variety, but this is all that's out there. I hope my store is unusual that way. It could very well be designed to serve our local population of soda-guzzling sugar eaters.
