It has been another fun year with all of you and I hope to spend next year with you all....

On West Main Street in Richfield Springs, New York,(Zone 5) at the foot of the hill as you enter the center of the village, there is a white house, formerly, or perhaps still, the office of the Jordan architectural firm. Immediately adjacent to it, on the adjoining property, there was, in 1974, and may still be, a Water Beech grown upside down, the gnarled, contorted and twisted root crown producing a very dense canopy of healthy leaves, with dense shade underneath. If that tree is still there, there is your answer. This is, or was, a healthy tree, surviving the often brutal winters characteristic of the Mohawk Valley uplands. Consult Dave's Garden- they may have the answer. zoom in on Google Earth's satellite image of Richfield Springs, NY; It's on the south side of W. Main St. US 20, where it veers west-northwest up a long hill towards its intersection with NYS Route 28 just outside the village line. There is a side street two doors away. The tree, situated in the side yard between the two old houses, would show up on the satellite image as a relatively small, round, dense crown.

Fairegold, sorry I haven't been here for a few days: our DD took my girlfriend and I to Toronto for a Mother's Day weekend (my friend's two daughters live there), and we had a lovely time! I truly needed that! About your dear Mother: my Mom said the same things to me many times, and I know how it just catches in our tummys and makes us feel so helpless. When she asked me why she isn't dead, yet, I said that it was for God to know that, and she should speak to Him in her prayers; that if it wasn't her time, yet, there was good reason for it: maybe we just still needed her with us. Fortunately (and I think you know what I mean, here), her dementia has progressed to the point where she can no longer form those thoughts let alone vocalize them. I believe that's a blessing in a very convoluted way... I, too, suffer from high blood pressure, and just before Mom went into the NH, was put on another, a third medication to control it. I evidently wasn't handling things as well as I thought I was: my body was silently protesting the pressure I was in. Thank goodness I can tolerate those meds: in your situation it's much more imperative that you do something to control your BP if meds aren't the answer. It's easy for us to say "take care of yourself" but after being a care-giver for so long, we can only answer: How? You simply must find ways to bring your "fight or flight" BP down, and that may mean meditation using meditation tapes, listening to theraputic music (there are many out there), taking a yoga class, learning how to really breathe! There's nothing selfish about keeping yourself well...you'll be of no use to your Mother if your own health is deteriorating. Please look into some venues for yourself, okay? As for your youngest brother, pull away from that issue! It's his problem....he'll be the one who will feel the guilt of not doing more for her after she's passed (or he won't! But it's not your concern.) You can't take on the world's problems with your Mother...you CAN be there for her...make sure things that you want in place are put into place no matter what she thinks. She's 95...my Mother is 91...they're tired. They may indicate one day that all they want it to die, yet the next day it'll be different. Don't swing emotionally from one extreme to another. Approach it more methodically....it's not callous..it's life-saving for you! Smile and nod, then do what you feel is appropriate. As for falls, PeeBee is right. As usual ;-) My Mom fell in the first week she was in the NH, because she was using her walker, and my first reaction was guilt. Thank goodness for my friends here and at home, I was made to see that unless I stood by her side 24/7, there were no guarantees she wouldn't have fallen at home. She may fall. She may break something and end up in the hospital. She may pass away from it. Some do. But, Sweetie....if that's the way it may happen, then who are we to feel the need to control it all? We can't keep them with us forever. Something definitely WILL happen. The day, the manner of their passing is not for us to know. Just do the best you can without being SuperDaughter, and you will always know in your heart that you did the best you could. As for anyone else's failures, they're not your concern. My brother and his family always felt that sending flowers on Mother's Day and her birthday, phoning her, etc was enough. And it was enough for Mom. Maybe I would have wished that even ONCE in 12 years they would have said...Linda..you and your hubby need a break: we're coming up to care for Mom for a week (or even a weekend!), so you two can get away. In a perfect world, that would have been wonderful. But nothing and no one (even us!;-) is perfect, so we have to play the hand we're dealt and not worry about anyone else's cards. Fairegold: relax. Please take tangible, positive steps to take a meditation class, or purchase CDs, or do whatever you need to do to recharge your batteries and take care of that BP problem. Close the door and do what YOU need to do for YOU. You still have a full life ahead of you....be well. Blessings Linda

Thank you all for the responses. I did wait about 8 minutes even though the recipe says 5, so that was the problem. I know because I made it again (just had to see if I could do it! I will freeze a lot of it)(found a different recipe, but for the same size pan) and turned it out the instant it came out the oven. It came out perfectly! I have made it in a cast iron skillet when I was teenager at my grandmothers house... I don't own one, but maybe it's time to consider buying one! The ugly one tasted OK, but it was dry... I just pour milk over it when I want a piece. Gldno1, I also tried to stop baking (and stop attending this forum) in an effort to lose weight. I was still just as fat, just got sad on top of it. I'd rather be plump and happy than skinny and miserable! I enjoy baking (and this forum) and cannot stop!

Thank you all! Have a hard time to post anymore lately, just too busy and sometimes not up to. >>I have a pear tree too. What ya do with all those pears? Most of them have juiced, mixed them a little at the time with apples. Some, still in the frigde for fresh eating, take a couple everyday to work. They keep a long time in the frigde. These pears are called Golden Spice. If you had a dehydrator, slice them in half lengthways first, make sure, they are still fairly firm. Konrad

Hmmm. To each his own! Why is it upside down, (may I ask)?

You must have a sturdy ceiling to hold all those ornaments. I bet its hard to keep the presents up there tho. :)

Not really my idea I found it on ebay and starting a bidding war got it for less than 100.00

but I didnt know if I was gonna like it and I love it.
It comes in 3 sections and over 900 lights not hard to put up and it has a stand that you put the top pole in .It does not hang from the ceiling and it does leave plenty of room for gifts under the tree.
My hubby was in ILL when I put the tree up and when he came home he asked me what the heck I had been drinking LOL.

I love it! I've been seeing them around here (in stores) for at least 2 years and think it is just great. Glad to see one in a real home and it really works!

The uside down tree is actually a very old idea...

The Upside Down Christmas Tree Â It was a common tradition in Victorian times to display a "table top" tree in the parlor. Often the trees were too big for the table so the top would be cut off and hung upside down in another part of the house. This afforded the opportunity to have another tree to display the many handmade treasures collected over the years. Look for the upside down tree in the entry to Berry Manor Inn.

In the 7th century, a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas decoration industry.

Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century in Central Europe, the Fir tree was being hung upside-down, from ceilings at Christmas time as a symbol of Christianity.

The first decorated Christmas tree was at Riga in Latvia, in 1510. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles, to show his children how the stars twinkled through the dark night.

Very cool!! Caryn has been talking about doing this. Her house is VERY small, and she just has a table top tree. This would be about the only kind of tree that she could fit in there. We have seen them for the last 2 Christmas'. And she did find out that it is a very old tradition.

I enjoyed reading the story about the upside down tree.Never heard that before.
One year I didn't have a very big area for a tree.I used half of my artificial tree and put the flat side against the wall.It looked really neat and saved a lot of floor space.I got a lot of compliments on that tree.

I have debated for a couple of years on changing to the upside down tree and leaving it up all year and decorate for each occassion but still keep putting it off, I love the way the decorations can hang down and all the space underneath.

Ummmm....one question, where does one put the tree-top decoration (angel or star)? Well I guess it's two questions, because I'm wondering if the tree trunk (or stem) just sticks out of the top. I guess you could put the tree-top decoration on that....

Guess I don't get out too much, as I'm having a hard time thinking outside the box....LOL

thanks for the info Kat I had never heard that story you are just a wise lady!!
I dont have a star on the top of the tree dont think you could put one up there but it really doesnt need it with all the other things on the treeB but I bet you could wire one up there....the top just falls down toward the floor so that it keeps the shape.
