It has been another fun year with all of you and I hope to spend next year with you all....

On West Main Street in Richfield Springs, New York,(Zone 5) at the foot of the hill as you enter the center of the village, there is a white house, formerly, or perhaps still, the office of the Jordan architectural firm. Immediately adjacent to it, on the adjoining property, there was, in 1974, and may still be, a Water Beech grown upside down, the gnarled, contorted and twisted root crown producing a very dense canopy of healthy leaves, with dense shade underneath. If that tree is still there, there is your answer. This is, or was, a healthy tree, surviving the often brutal winters characteristic of the Mohawk Valley uplands. Consult Dave's Garden- they may have the answer. zoom in on Google Earth's satellite image of Richfield Springs, NY; It's on the south side of W. Main St. US 20, where it veers west-northwest up a long hill towards its intersection with NYS Route 28 just outside the village line. There is a side street two doors away. The tree, situated in the side yard between the two old houses, would show up on the satellite image as a relatively small, round, dense crown.

Welcome to the rural South, Mary... Took the city LETTING people practically deforest the entire area and make national news in the process BEFORE they put a stop to it. Now I KNOW how some of these lots must have looked, based on how other wooded pine lots look -- 100 or more pine trees to the acre, as the Southern White Pine tends to grow in tight groups like that -- and pretty much ANYBODY planning to build would cut down a good percentage of those in the process to make room for their home, and thin the rest to make room for other things... but again, we're not talking about THAT MANY TREES to provide habitat for so few birds. People can go SO DANGED FAR off the deep end over things. Heck, maybe they should start CREATING a few "woodpecker trees" by "sap-ringing" them and cutting little "Vs" to make the beginning of what looks like a nest hole... work WITH the birds, rather than against them. Or does that make too much sense? :(

Why is my monadenium growing upside-down?

I have a very similar plant that lost its growth point, and the stem has turned to wood. It has one branch emerging in the middle at a right angle. It is growing very long, and I have to support the branch by leaning it over nearby pots. I think yours is Monadenium heteropodum. I have grown alot of tomatoes in my gardening career and I don't understand why growing them upside down is desirable. I understand, if you don't have space, or if you have a soil-borne disease, or if your health doesn't allow for it or finally the novelty of it. I may just do it to say I have tried it. I grow tomatoes in the ground, in pots, in hanging baskets, now upside down? My concern, too much water, stem rot? Tomatoes don't like to have wet feet (at least mine don't) and I would think the water would sit at the bottom of the bucket. Finally you are putting alot of weight on the roots and stem. I would think that it would/ could break off. Fill me in on the why? I don't believe everything I see on TV. Hoovb- Love the DIY nature of this project. Good Luck, maybe we cold compare pictures.

Hmmm. To each his own! Why is it upside down, (may I ask)?

You must have a sturdy ceiling to hold all those ornaments. I bet its hard to keep the presents up there tho. :)

Not really my idea I found it on ebay and starting a bidding war got it for less than 100.00

but I didnt know if I was gonna like it and I love it.
It comes in 3 sections and over 900 lights not hard to put up and it has a stand that you put the top pole in .It does not hang from the ceiling and it does leave plenty of room for gifts under the tree.
My hubby was in ILL when I put the tree up and when he came home he asked me what the heck I had been drinking LOL.

I love it! I've been seeing them around here (in stores) for at least 2 years and think it is just great. Glad to see one in a real home and it really works!

The uside down tree is actually a very old idea...

The Upside Down Christmas Tree Â It was a common tradition in Victorian times to display a "table top" tree in the parlor. Often the trees were too big for the table so the top would be cut off and hung upside down in another part of the house. This afforded the opportunity to have another tree to display the many handmade treasures collected over the years. Look for the upside down tree in the entry to Berry Manor Inn.

In the 7th century, a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, went to Germany to teach the Word of God. He did many good works there, and spent much time in Thuringia, an area which was to become the cradle of the Christmas decoration industry.

Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The converted people began to revere the Fir tree as God's Tree, as they had previously revered the Oak. By the 12th century in Central Europe, the Fir tree was being hung upside-down, from ceilings at Christmas time as a symbol of Christianity.

The first decorated Christmas tree was at Riga in Latvia, in 1510. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther is said to have decorated a small Christmas Tree with candles, to show his children how the stars twinkled through the dark night.

Very cool!! Caryn has been talking about doing this. Her house is VERY small, and she just has a table top tree. This would be about the only kind of tree that she could fit in there. We have seen them for the last 2 Christmas'. And she did find out that it is a very old tradition.

I enjoyed reading the story about the upside down tree.Never heard that before.
One year I didn't have a very big area for a tree.I used half of my artificial tree and put the flat side against the wall.It looked really neat and saved a lot of floor space.I got a lot of compliments on that tree.

I have debated for a couple of years on changing to the upside down tree and leaving it up all year and decorate for each occassion but still keep putting it off, I love the way the decorations can hang down and all the space underneath.

Ummmm....one question, where does one put the tree-top decoration (angel or star)? Well I guess it's two questions, because I'm wondering if the tree trunk (or stem) just sticks out of the top. I guess you could put the tree-top decoration on that....

Guess I don't get out too much, as I'm having a hard time thinking outside the box....LOL

thanks for the info Kat I had never heard that story you are just a wise lady!!
I dont have a star on the top of the tree dont think you could put one up there but it really doesnt need it with all the other things on the treeB but I bet you could wire one up there....the top just falls down toward the floor so that it keeps the shape.
