Wow! We're really in for it tonight!

There is an extreme winter storm warning in effect for our area tonight and tomorrow.

"A NEAR-CRIPPLING SNOW STORM WITH HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW AS WELL AS SOME ICE PELLETS TONIGHT AND SUNDAY. THIS IS A WARNING THAT DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE IMMINENT"

They are forcasting up to 40 cm of snow with high winds preceded by freezing rain. Thunder claps with snow bursts!!!

I am going out now to back the car into the driveway between the two houses. Hopefully that will protect it some. And hopefully it will be Tuesday before we get dug out!!!

Couch, blanket, fireplace, here I come! I'm dreaming of a White Christmas!

Good luck. I always go stock up on vittles when I see a weather advisory like this headed for us. Also stock some water bottles, just in case. And plenty of toilet paper.

I will continue by building one small compost pile this year. Mostly, the material will come from one of my neighbors who makes this strange commitment to compost each year. He has tons of what he calls compost! It is almost entirely lawn clippings and pine needles. Appropriate choices but he does no more than pile them up. In fact, he invites a landscaper guy to dump lawn clippings in his yard where nothing is likely to be done with them for a number of years. They aren't even mixed into the pine needles which might even be left in plastic bags and tossed into the pile - I kid you not! Anyway he is always pushing this "miracle material" (which is obviously in his way) and I'm willing to haul off several wheelbarrow loads. Remarkably, he has now tilled his garden and it does not appear that he will make use of a single fork-full of his own "compost" this spring! At the rate he is utilizing this material, I figure that he will have some of what is already piled up over there into the next decade! What I carry off will be used to mulch the potato beds after allowing it another 12 months of composting. I don't add anything but soil but it gets good and fluffed up. Just doing this seems to take care of the bindweed seed that must be in it - yes, bindweed is robustly growing over some of the neighbor's bins! My own compostables will continue to be buried under 8" or 10" of soil directly in the garden beds as they become available. I realized the other day that the nature of the soil here may be a primary reason why this seems to work so well for me. Decomposition must be at least partly an anaerobic process when I do this. However, my garden soil has a great deal of gravel in it. In my imagination at least, around each rock is trapped some air. Layering clay over compostables may not be entirely successful but in my garden, all of the material will decay away uneventfully while doing a good deal to improve soil tilth and fertility. Steve

Yes- we really need to get some photos! I have just been tooooo busy every second of the day this past week! But it's really coming along: very exciting! I did purchase my Toto through a seller I found on eBay (ebuildersmerchant) but it wasn't an actual auction... I emailed them -as well as several other online retailers- with my list of plumbing and fixtures and asked for bids. I can't say enough good things about ebuildersmerchant.... their prices were gret, and the service was wonderful. Excellent communication, very fast shipping, etc. OK- pics soon I promise! Staecy

Snow is predicted here, in Nebraska this week. Funny, yesterday it got up to 61 degrees, and today is down in the teens. I recently read the book "The Children's Blizzard" which happened in January, 1888 - weather was unseasonably warm one day, and a cold front and blowing snow moved in over the Midwest (where we live!) the next afternoon, just as schoolchildren were getting out of school. Over 100 people died - couldn't see in the blowing wind and snow, got disoriented, not enough warm clothes on, etc. The weather here yesterday, and today, made me think of that! I think we're prepared, though. (I REALLY do not like winter!! - at least I'm retired now, and can just stay home).

I tended to some roses today, but that was the extent of my yard work. May squeeze some more in, but it's doubtful. Electrician looks to have another full day of work Monday. He found some interesting things in my walls that made it take more time. Plumber moved the gas line from previous gas dryer to new gas range (I've got to check the specs...looks high and looks like it sticks out quite a bit) and moved the one supply line for the washer over as needed. But...I think it's too tall. But that should be easy enough to cut down if needed. I emailed GC, plumber didn't fix sink plumbing yet. Supposed to get new angle stops etc. GC's wife called and said that's no biggie, it'll get done before cabinet install, or even after. I said since they're leaking, I'd prefer it was before. She didn't know they were leaking, so it will now be before. My big accomplishments for the day were nailing down almost all lighting issues, I think. I bought the recessed lighting things (I don't know what they are each called...the attach them in the ceiling part and the plug them into that part...but don't call it a bulb), a few dimmers, one receptacle with usb holes. I ordered a few more lighting/switches related things on Amazon and should be here Sunday. And I emailed and talked on the phone with Environmental Lighting and got a plan for my UCL. I'm sure I could have pieced together something less expensive, but I understand this and can install it myself, so that'll be a savings in itself. Also, I confirmed that I need one less outlet for the UCL installed, so that will save. I 'adjusted' a few things re: the electrician's work. The GC had drawn the outlets smack-dab in the middle of the backsplash. I had him move them down and over on either side of the range. I didn't ask the one in the middle of another wall to be moved, though it probably could be. I may end up asking about that if it wears on me this weekend. And I also asked him to install an outlet in the utility cabinet so I can charge my hand vac, Braava, etc. Tacos just arrived. :)

I just got back from the grocery store - stocking up on essentials. Got batteries and candles too (haven't unpacked ours yet), in case of power outages. Sounds like it's going to be pretty brutal!

I am jealous! We are getting snow though, yeah!! I love a good snow storm as long as the electric does not go out. Stay inside and be safe.

Mush, the front of your house is as beautiful as the back of it. I hope the weather is kinder and gentler than the prediction. Tuck yourself in and stay warm. I hope you don't lose power so you can stay in touch with us.

Mush, I always love to see pictures of your charming house espcecially in the wintertime.

We are expecting between 7-14 inches of snow tonight (I'll believe it when I see it) and some freezing rain. My brother bought a shovel and ice breaker at Costco tonight just in case because he has to shovel the public sidewalk that abuts his house. I have a small shovel because I don't bother with my driveway (I don't drive) and I just need to do the porch and my sidewalks and back patio at the side door for Loki.

We have missed all the winter storms so far but I don't know about this one. Winds have really picked up and they are coming from the North (Detroit area) LOL.

I stocked up on dog and cat food but didn't do my grocery shopping yet. I have lots of soup in my cupboard so I am not worried. I probably should have gotten some fake fire logs for the fireplace just to have a fire while the snow is falling.

Hope you all stay warm. I am waiting for the weather to come on the local stations to see what, if anything is going to hit us.

NO we did not sent it east from ND. We have been getting the Alberta clippers. Some snow but just cold weather. Hope all of you are safe and warm.

Conservately the Detroit weatherman said 9-12 inches for sure but thinks the totals will be higher.

I took the duvet cover off my bed to wash right now so I can put the duvet into it just in case the power goes off. Getting my warm pj's and sweatshirts out of storeage closet. I guess winter is finally here. LOL

We also have decided that we will stay inside tomorrow. DH already arranged for one of my friend's sons to come and snowblow us out.

Now how do they expect anyone to finish Christmas shopping in that weather?? That is a beautiful picture...you house is so cute! I would love a white Christmas just once! We're lucky it's not hot here, it's been cold here, for us anyway, we usually have a warm Christmas.

We are under a Winter Storm Warning, with freezing rain, snow and high winds. So far it is just rain. Some power outages already about 5 miles away.

I have plenty food, but if we don't have power it doesn't matter. Cold cereal with milk and bananas can sustain me for a good while. Or PB&J sandwiches. No hot tea is the worst of all.

DD and I were planning to go to an Antique Mall tomorrow for some Christmas shopping. Doubt if that will happen!

Be careful out there, all of you who are in the path of this bad weather.

We got about 4" here in western Michigan. It is beautiful! We stayed home from church because they asked us to stay off the roads. I don't think because of the snow but the winds will kick up and the plows have not been out yet. I will be baking today, should be a perfect day to do that. Husband will be lighting a fire in the fireplace later. Just don't get much better than that. I finshed my Christmas shopping yesterday.
