Ham prices!

Ran to the store to get Tom Turkey today so he can thaw in the extra fridge. I checked the ham prices cause I need one of those too.

OMG I almost fell over to the floor. $4.39/lb??????? My gosh a 9 point some pounder was over $41. For petes sake!

These were Hillshire Farms brown sugar cured and the other was Hormel Cure 81,spiral sliced.

Holy Moley were they that high priced last Christmas?

I am going to have to pass the hat before dinner Christmas Day! LOL Just kidding, I think.

Have hams gone up drastically or what? Think the last whole ham I bought was Easter.

I got one last week so I could turn the oven on. 9 lb Hormel spiral sliced for $18.00. Now I have to throw it away. After I cooked it I put it in the garage since I had no way to refrigerate it without power. During work it got up to 50 before the power came back on.

The little I had was very good.

I also like bone in....and have cooked my share of butt end hams as well as whole hams....when you get a hog and have it butchered and the hams smoked, you have to do SOMETHING with the butt. Yes, the shank is easier to carve. I prefer uncooked ham....and you sure don't have to cook it all day....a big one will be done in 3 hours or so at 325....depending how big is BIG! LOL! And I think they taste better by far! I also have placed the ham, cut side up in a dish in the refrigerator and poured honey over it....let it sink in and added more, repeat... It's sweet but delicious! So.....the consenus...bone in is tastier, shank end easier to carve, I like ready to cook rather than pre cooked....but some don't care, and honey baked are delicious, but expensive. That said, I think cure 81 is not worth the price and more like lunch meat than =real ham and I say stay away from those ham loaf things! Linda C

I have a tiny vintage tv in the kitchen pantry run and often have the two cooking/food networks on for background noise....zip back and forth between the two as some are 'nails on chalkboard'. CooksIllustrated tasted hams yesterday and I think Cook's won by a landslide. Barely paying attention because I thought testing only three was not a good and fair test. They did test without heating and glazing. (I think it was Cook's brand. It was a clear package) I just checked and they have tested a few times but I don't have access to their site.. Then looked for other 'best' reviews. Many winners. Then found my method posted above and it is a JuliaChild recipe I'm sure where I first came upon it....simmering in aromatics. I used Kirkland because it jumped in my cart passing by.

Ignoring the outburst.....and back to hams... To me....as I know it....a "country ham" is one that has been dry aged and has to be soaked, scrubbed and boiled in 2 changes of water before being baked. Then there is a fully cooked ham which is ready to eat and only needs to be warmed to eat if you like it hot...if not then just cut 'er up and eat. Than there is something else.....it's not cooked and the package says it needs to be cooked at thus and so for thus and so number or hours, or until a thermometer in the thickest part registers 160 degrees. The last ham I bought like that (a Smithfield for a funeral lunch) was wonderful....even if a pain to prepare......and I know that they are "raw" because the one that someone else cooked was like raw meat inside....I had to bake it more. I have no idea how those raw, but not country hams are cured. And I LIKE brown sugar glazed ham and cranberry sauce on my turkey and applesauce with my pork and fruit stuffed pork loin and sweet and sour shrimp. I love asparagus with hollandaise and trice baked potatoes with sour cream and cheese. I like butter on my whole grain bread.....sometimes even JAM!!!!! Forget the honey glazed ham and add your own honey if you want it sweet. Linda C

We got some from Sam's today for 2.18 per pound for spiral sliced and 2.78 per pound for smoked black forest ham.

DH got a Smithfield spiral sliced ham for $1.69 lb. at Walmart a week or so ago. (He first told me it was $1.13 but his memory isn't so good). We went back for a second ham.

DH and I assemble 100 brown paper sacks of fruit, nuts and candy for the kids at our church at Christmas. Fruit prices are certainly much higher this year, but we love doing it!

I recommend the hams at Sam's. (I'm a poet and don't know it!) DH fixed one Thanksgiving and it was delicious. They give you a packet of seasoning and you brush it on. Yum.

I had DD check at Sams in her town, they said NO hams??? She has Super Walmart too tho and will check there tomorrow! She will be home Saturday and will bring it then.

After only paying $23 and some cents for a 20 pound turkey I am NOT paying $43 for a ham! I know they are cheaper elsewhere. We have one grocery store and the prices are outrageous. We can save $1.50 minimum on so many things at Walmart. Sometimes up to $3.00 less. Thats on ONE item, but never seen meat at our Walmart 45 miles away.

We bought a Smithfield sugar cured ham at Sam's last week. It was $1.59 a pound which is darn good for a Smithfield ham, but then we live about 35 miles from Smithfield too. :o)

I wanted a chuck roast to make some stew and went to the store to get one....when I saw it was OVER $4 a pound, I no longer had a taste for it.

(GROUND CHUCK, by the way, was $2.39....go figure...!!!)

Our Fry's (Kroger) grocery store has spiral ham for $1.19 a pound. They have Hillshire Farms for $2.49 a pound.

I am getting prime rib since they have the small end for $4.99 a pound or the large end for $3.88 a pound. I usually stock the freezer with a couple of these to have during the year.
