We must be on the same wave length. I purged my sock drawer last night. Next... the linen closet. Where did all that stuff come from anyway.

I get the same way when I watch shows about the people who fill up their houses with junk and can't get rid of anything.

I too am purging but for a different reason ... I don't want to pack a bunch of junk I'll just have to unpack in a month or so.

We are having our kitchen and several other rooms remodeled and getting new wood floors so we have to move out of those rooms completely. What a pain!

I had to sleep on the couch when I started cleaning out my closet. I had stacked everything on my bed!

I have to get rid of my smaller sized clothes, which is painful.

I wish I had the urge to purge! I get small doses of it but it never lasts very long. I admire these people that can purge easily!!

I get rid of things periodically. I hate the feeling of having too much "stuff" around me,so I keep things pretty organized.

I purge when I move - the thrift stores HATE to see me pull up in their parking lot!

When I try to get rid of "stuff" DH follows me to the trash can or the recycle bin or the stuff in the car to take to a thrift store and carries most of it back in.
Once, he was gone for several days and I took lots of stuff to the thrift store....and he never missed any of it. LOL

I'm purging the guest room as we speak. It seems to have turned into a 'storage' room somewhere along the line. I got these great under the bed storage boxes I'm filling, so as to free up room in the linen closet.

Now what am I to do with this handmade BLENKO glass bear, described as a paperweight. I have no idea where it even came from.

It's clear glass. Anyone want it for the cost of postage?

Hiya bob!!!!! *very big grin* I've missed you, guy.

Don't get me started on the garage... We have a garden building that is supposed to be for garden stuff. It houses two lawnmowers, weed whackers, power washer, shovels, hoses, sprinklers, sprayers, etc. Will someone tell me why on earth we STILL have one tiller and a big old branch mulcher thingy in the garage AND a tiller sitting outside covered in ice? I suspect we have too much stuff OR it could be that DH is storing too much deer corn in the garden shed for all of the stuff that should be in there!

Have had, get this, 3 garage sales since March!!

Had one this past weekend, as a matter of fact. Got rid of a bunch of stuff and used the $ I made to buy a cabinet to store things in! LOL

I've been taking bag after bag of clothes to the thrift store. I feel your pain, sister, I feel your pain! LOL

I have been purging the attic for several days now. We took quite a bit of trash out to the street to be picked up in the morning and put a few things in the garage to have a sale soon. I'll be glad when I'm done.

i finally got a counter about 2x3 ft square done! dh had taken over with his cordless drill and the charger! and he wants more tools for christmas!

I've been purging for the last two years...it feels great and I've lined my pockets with some spending cash...two garage sales, two trips to the goodwill store and craigslist and ebay are a dream come true for cleaning out around my house!

I've been purging off and on all year.I realized i'm getting older,LOL,and i don't want my kids to have to deal with all this stuff,when my time on earth is done.Even though i hope that won't be for many more years.Fingers and toes crossed,LOL,LOl

Purging is a way of life for me -- only got so much space. When we had 4 kids at home, with 2 Nov. birthdays & Christmas & a 1500 sf house, I'd tell them they had to get rid of old thing b/c they'd need room for the new things. I tell my adult DD who's getting everwhelmed with not enough closet space, that my rule for myself is that if I buy 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs go to Goodwill. A new t-shirt? -- a shirt for Goodwill. Then there's DH who can't even part with an expired coupon. When he's out of town, I purge us of things like a coffee can full of rusty nails that he "NEEDS!!!!" He doesn't miss the junk. Moving 900 miles 2 yrs. ago helped get rid of a lot of stuff --- but it's accumulating again! AARRGGHH!

Did someone tell of a can of rusty nails? Actually, rusty nails hold better.

How about bent ones, as well?

I have some of those ... but the other day when I needed some, I couldn't find them.

It's been snowing a couple of times.

Now ... where did I store those overshoes?

I have quite a few holey socks (for clergy, is that spelled "holy"?) that need some darning during this winter. Actually, I broke down and bought a pack of 5 new socks, the other day.

When you get rid of "too small" clothes, you say that it is "painful".

If you put them on, often one of two problems may develop:

1. difficulty of breathing, or

2. that may be painful, too.

Have a joyful preparation time for the holiday, everyone, if there's a holiday coming for you.

As many of you really don't need more stuff ...

... may your gift to yourself be further understanding and realization of, and beginning to develop, another facet of that complex and interesting person that is you, that has been lying dormant and unfulfilled for all of those years that you've been operational up till now.

Surprise your loved ones and friends (and yourself) ... develop another part of you that they (and you) can rejoice in and be thankful for in months and years to come.

bob, I sat down at the Kitchen Table back during our build (so during the days at GW's BAH forum).
When we started BAHRR, I left here. I've since returned to find many old faces!! Well, they aren't OLD - just familiar.
I actually met some of the KT folks during our build - they are all ax murderers, of course, and I was lucky to survive.

I did a different kind of purge... I tossed a few things when we emptied the fridge while our power was out. :)

Other than that, nope, no need to purge... I go through my closet at the end of every season, and donate the stuff I haven't worn.

I've been motivated to purge alot for several reasons. Like a few others, I don't want my kids to have to deal with my "stuff", and just watching those shows about cleaning out clutter from people's homes - don't want that to happen to me! The last few years I've gotten rid of a TON of stuff - would be more, but DH likes to hang on to useless things too long. I also have a dear friend who, some of us suspect is a hoarder with a serious problem, and it's so sad - just don't want to be like that!
(Getting rid of DD's 22-yr old wedding dress this week - she doesn't want it, and I'm tired of being the repository for wedding dresses, prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, etc.) Now that takes courage, cause it's beautiful, and I made it - it's going to a charity organization.
I can now fit all my clothes in my closet - - and all the clothes in my closet fit me, and I wear them. Awesome feeling!

I go thru spurts of purging. I'll get a wild hair when something falls off a shelf and the next thing I know I'm stuffing clothes into bags and then shoes, etc. Off to the doggie store it goes.

I really need to do the guest room closet, but I'm scared! lol It's full of craft things, paint cans, sets of dishes, winter coats that we rarely wear but don't want to part with, etc. It's a disaster. And gift wrap, and quilts, and Necci's wardrobe and accessories, oy vey. It's a nightmare!

Hello everyone, new to this forum but not to other GW forums. I, too, get the urge to purge at least once a year. Having been a navy wife for many years and moving every 2 or 3 years, I had to keep "stuff" to a minimum. Now that husband is retired, "stuff" is beginning to build up and it's time to purge. Thank heaven for Goodwill and garage sales......

I would love for DH to get the urge to purge. He is a packrat from way back..
He has a 1955 Jeep disassembled and packed in boxes in our shed(besides the frame of course)We have been married 15 years and he has never opened any of the boxes.!

I- myself- need to go through blankets and toss old pillows and sheets. Those are things that are bugging me in the closet.

Also, when we got the tree and decorations out this year I found many boxes that were perfectly good from last year that can be used this year. I cannot remember who put them in the decoration box--maybe me or more likely DH? But this year I will not allow them to be saved again. That took up quite a bit of room in the decorations box.

It took me several rounds to get through my closet. Every time I thought I was finished, I'd see several more things that I knew better than to keep. I also went through my tee shirt drawer, my sock drawer, and my PJs. I have brand new socks that I'll never wear and some that I will - now that I know I have them!

I need to tackle my office next, which is going to also consist of moving some furniture, unhooking and moving all of the computer stuff, etc. That may have to wait for another day...

Oh boy, when i opened this thread I thought I was going to read that you had an eating disorder! So glad to see you are only cleaning closets! LOL!!!!

And, yes, I am constantly decluttering. I'm going to look into selling on eBay after the first of the year. I'm tired of throwing money away.

I think being a pack rat, and being a procrastinator go hand in hand. The Jeep in boxes reminded me of my sewing machine legs. About a month ago someone posted a question about using an old sewing machine for a table. It reminded me of the sewing machine legs I have in the garage. About 15 years ago, I saw that someone had put them out for the trash. I picked them up, and brought them to a friend who sandblasted them for me, and put a coat of primer on them. All I need to do is put a coat of paint on them, and come up with a top, and I've got a cool little table. 15 years later, I have moved three times, and I still haven't done anything with them.
