I have an announcement to shout!!

Sorry I had to shout, but this is one of the most exciting things that has happened to me in years!!! I have worked at the same factory for over 37 years. For many years it was a wonderful place to work, but the past 10 years have been anything but. My co-workers are still wonderful people, well, most of them anyway and my supervisors are really nice people, but the corporate end has made life miserable for a lot of us. I don't have to worry about that anymore because I AM RETIRED!!!!!!!!!! Friday was my last day to work.

We have worked a 29 or 30 day on and 1 day off shift for a few years now. We have worked lots and lots of 12 hour shifts and a good many 16 hour shifts. We have worked any and all shifts. Due to this work schedule I am way behind on hobbies, crafts, housework, relaxing etc. Because Christmas is near and because I want to have a yard sale next Saturday I am pretty busy right now, but oh boy, after the first of the year I'm gonna do a lot of just what I want to do. It's going to be such fun.

I plan to be here a lot more. I hope y'all don't get sick of me. I'm way behind on reading and posting here too, but not for long.

Linda ~ who can't stop grinning

I am SORE - spent 2-1/2 hours bent over, yanking the dreaded oxalis pes-caprae (Bermuda Buttercup) weed out wherever I could reach. It's times like this I can't imagine having to take care of something bigger than our 1/6 of an acre. How do people do it? Maybe they hire help, I can't imagine being able to do it all by oneself (as I do). The weeds will come back, of course, so I'll need to do another round in a month or so. Yes, definitely time to bait again with Sluggo, too! The bearded iris have been blooming for over a month, and the white callas are finally starting to bloom too. They are one of my favorite pairings. And the freesias and ranunculus are putting up buds, all ready to bloom soon. I can hardly wait - I love those two bulbs. I never used to like ranunculus, but the new Bloomingdale hybrids totally won me over. And who can resist the sweet perfume of freesias? This was a bouquet from last spring - I meant to cut some callas and iris today, but was just too tired after all that work!

The herringbone upholstery fabric I purchased is available in a number of places. The best price I have found is at Mary Jo's Cloth Store. It's also available at Calico Corners. At MJ and at CC the fabric is called "Jumper" and it comes in a large variety of color choices. At Ethan Allen it's called "Turner". At Pottery Barn there is a similar fabric called "Chunky Herringbone". At PB it is only available in 2 different colors. Pecan is the color I used on the office chair. I had a feeling that color was also going to be great for my next project (sofa & love seat), so I was using the chair as "practice" and to also see if I love it in a large piece (as opposed to just seeing it on a swatch/sample piece). For the office chair, I had to pay more (even though it was on sale) and order through Calico Corners because of the small amount (2 yards). At Mary Jo's, the color Pecan has to be ordered in a larger amount...I think because they don't stock it? It's not that way for all colors. It's best to give them a call and check first. I was so pleased with the color of the chair, & the way the fabric feels and sews, that I ordered 18 yards from Mary Jo's for the love seat. Whatever amount is leftover after the love seat is done (probably in a few weeks), I can use toward the matching sofa. I'll place a separate order for the sofa. The shipping is very reasonable ($7.99), so not an issue in this situation. The 18 yards from Mary Jo's arrived yesterday. It looks exactly the same as the fabric from Calico Corners. When I get a chance to work with it (tomorrow), I will know more. If there is any difference at all, it may be that the backing is a tiny bit thinner on the fabric from MJ. I can't be certain, but may know more tomorrow. Sometimes, I see the fabric's manufacturer/vendor listed as Valdese and sometimes as UC Manufacturers. Maybe those two companies are the same? Let me know if you learn anything about this fabric and if you end up getting some. What will you be using it on? No one offends me with what they have to offer. But of the two posts for trading I just made, the first person to respond to each post asked if I'd consider sending my plants for postage which is, indeed, asking me to give my plants away. By writing 'Please let me know what you have in trade, or have an up-to-date list' I thought it was clear that I want to TRADE only. Sorry if expecting something in return offends anyone.

You are zone 7 and based on my experience please examine your "south facing" site carefully. I have two T & S (zone 6a) and three other macs in south-south west location. Regardless of how much they are watered they wilt in the afternoon. Some people are able to ignore this, but I think it is really unattractive. It is also a pia to water them as often as necessary in full sun. I'll be moving all my macs to part shade, even at the risk of reducing flowering, I know it is the strong afternoon sun that's the culprit. I did not know much about hydrangeas when I planted them. My T & S have been in the ground about 3 years. We had a terrible winter. I'm embarrassed that I can't remember as far back as April as to whether they were killed to the ground or not. However, even if the old (last years or older) stems are killed, the new growth will have flowers. It may just be later blooming. In a matter of weeks T & S puts on feet of growth. Mine are very vigorous. And they keep pushing out new flowers, unlike -it seems to me- some other macrophyllas that have one big substantial bloom. To state the very obvious, if the roots are killed, it is dead and won't do anything in the spring. But is very root hardy, too.

Congratulations! Have you known for a while that you were retiring, or maybe just recently took time to look at your finances and see that all those long hours had finally paid off?

I cannot imagine what life was like working like that...only having one day off in 30 days...16 hour shifts...needless to say, you haven't been doing much 'living' due to working.

I've been retired about 10 years now, and really can't see that I'm getting caught up on much of anything worth while, but I 'am' enjoyin life for the most part.

Woohoo! No more alarm clocks or long work days for you.

I'm so happy for you.

Sue ~ I had planned to work until I was 65. I turned 60 in November, but dh's health isn't all that good and I have an 11 year old that we adopted last year that I need to be home for. I worked in the warehouse and robots have taken over some of the workload. They are into full swing now and 13 jobs have been done away with. I signed up for a buyout. It's not a large amount of money involved at all, but it is something to put aside. I bid a midnight shift job recently to make sure I had enough seniority to get the buyout. They called me to the office shortly after 6am Friday morning. At 6:37 I was a free woman.

Hi Linda~

Congratulations on your retirement!

I just retired from 33 years teaching Business subjects to 9-12 graders at a Long Island, NY public high school.

There is nothing like retirement! I love it! Best decision I've ever made!

Both of us worked hard - over 30+ years - and now our time has come to do as we please each day and to enjoy life!

Linda,
I wish you well in your retirement. Sounds like you DESERVE it! So many years and such a brutal schedule - I can't even imagine how much you've sacrificed. Here's wishing you lots of happy days ahead filled with -- well, whatever you want them to be filled with!

Thanks for the good thoughts and wishes everyone. I didn't post about the retirement before today because I wanted to catch up on some posts I had missed lately and reply to some of the more serious ones before I shared such happy news.

Leslie ( grammahony ) did work for the same company in a different city. She knows about that brutal work schedule. Pattico's dh used to work there too.

Yaya ~ I hope we can get together sometime after the first of the year. My best friend is staying with her ex in West Memphis for the time being to help him after he had some serious surgery. It looks like she might be there for a while. I know I'll be there visiting from time to time.

There used to be a place in Jonesboro that had humongous hamburgers that were good too. I don't remember the name of the place or if it is still there, but one day I'm going over there to look around so I won't be too far from you.

I hope work time goes by swiftly for those of you who are still waiting for it to happen.

Hi Linda...just got home and read your "good news"

Congratulations !!!

Boy do we know what that work schedule was...I don't think Denny got the 1 day off...It was just every day unless you had a vacation coming. Denny just got so sick of it.

You are just going to love doing what you darn well please.

So happy for you.
