The Kitchen Table

My mailbox is overflowing!!!

Thanks to you all for the wonderful shower of greeting cards! My goodness......how fun it has been to hear from so many KT friends, and especially since I've been gone so long. Special thanks to pattico for the beautiful crocheted angel ornament and to Lydia for the gift bag of goodies! There is a night light, a notepad, and a cute little stuffed animal holding gel and body lotion. My youngest grandson where I am living had a puzzled look on his face as I tried to explain it all to him. The kindness of so many cyber friends since this nightmare began has really humbled me.

May everyone here at the table have a very blessed Christmas or whatever holiday you might be celebrating, and a wonderful New Year!

Julie, is it really YOU posting? I thought at first that maybe you were having someone else update us, then realized it had to be you. It's made my day to see you on here again. I've been hoping/praying for you to be getting better each day. I hope you and yours have a terrific Christmas holiday. And that the new year brings wonderful things your way.

Hi SM, I'm not sure I want to have any plants (the ones I love) outside in this weather any more. It's bitterly cold in winter and hail storm in summer. This used to be much better area to live because of the mild winter but for last 2 or 3 years, the weather turned sooo cold and hail. We had a hail storm yesterday afternoon. My house got flooded and hailed damaged within a month last June and July. (Thanks God not this year). This year, last 10 days ago, the rain poured down for almost 3 days. (exact the same date as last year). There were lot of houses got flooded again and my poor rose bushes just started to bloom beautifully got crushed from hail yesterday.... So, do I want some of my beloved plants outside to get this abusive weather?!! I do hope it will change back to the way it was before....For all the negative things I just said. There are beautiful things around here too. When the weather is nice, no hail, no storm and no terrible wind. It's beautiful! Rocky Mountains is just only an hour drive away and when you climbed up on one of those mountains.... I'm closer to heaven..... Tanie

Garlic - Heavenly Package in my Mailbox

Teresa, I received an identical package late this afternoon! It was too late to get a good picture today but will post one in the morning. I've already opened the black garlic butter (I'm assuming it's like peanut butter & contains no actual butter...just blended black garlic.) It's wonderful! After tasting I've got a recipe idea but it will have to wait a week, or so. It's a special meal & we've got an anniversary this week but DH is traveling. When he returns we'll make black garlic the star of our celebration dinner. /tricia

What to border my begonias with, around my mailbox flower bed?

Yellow/green plants sounds like something variegated. If so, too many possibilities to know which you've seen. Wax Begonias can take being out in the sun, but all day in Atlanta might be a bit much. IME with putting them in tons of sun, they will stay alive and bloom, and definitely develop a deep red color, but don't grow as quickly at all, not by a long shot. I'd recommend trying to find already-nice-size plants if you try this. Dragon wing would be another to consider. The leaves are green, but it makes a good amount of reddish (possibly more pink in some light) blooms. That kind would be a bit taller. Other red plants that might be enjoyable, small enough to go at the base of a mailbox... Alternanthera dentata, Swiss chard (green leaves with red stems & veins,) Coleus cultivars for sun. Dragons' blood Sedum might be a nice ground cover under the taller things, but would creep into grass without a border/barrier.

I have only two granddaughters who are grateful for everything I do and give them. It does warm my heart, I can only remember one small item my grand mother gave me years ago and it is still greatly treasured.
