at first I was embarressed...

and then, I was embarressed for them.

I had to run to the grocery store, as I had completely forgotten to get a dessert for dinner tomorrow. (what's Christmas dinner without dessert, eh?)

As I went down the lane of parking spaces, I noticed someone pulling out at the front, so I made my way down and pulled in. The ground still has snow, and the lines for the spaces were covered, and there are also piles of snow at the ends, so, I just "pulled in". As I was getting out of my car, another vehicle behind me honked. I looked, pointed at myself and said.."Me?" The lady driver says yes, and holds up two fingers. The teenager in the passenger seat held up one. You can guess which one....I was rather dumbstruck as they pulled away.

As I was locking my car, I could faintly see the parking space line, and well, obviously, I was in TWO spots. The truck to my right was right ON the line, so the space next to it was smaller than normal. I then saw the two "ladies" walking up to the store and so I called out to them that I hadn't realized I was in two spots and they could have just told me. The girl again raises her finger at me, and they both made noncommital remarks. I said I hope they have a Merry Christmas.

It was a crowded parking lot, and many people actually stopped to see what was going on.

I got back in my car and pulled over into just one spot.

On a brighter note....

Going through the self check out I realized I didn't have my store card with me, and so couldn't get the sale prices on the few items I'd bought. I asked the man next to me if he had one, and he put his alternate ID in the machine for me. I thanked him and wished him Merry Christmas also.

Spread cheer. Not drear...

Shame on them. And if that was a mother daughter team then double shame on mom. You did not know that you were in two spaces, Jean, it has happened to me, probably more often than I know. I commend you for moving the car, I would not have done so.

How embarassing. That teenager needs a good spanking, but I'm sure he's never been disciplined. but glad you got the sale prices due to a kind stranger. I've often lent my card when the person ahead doesn't have theirs. By the way, around here, if you go to a cashier they put in a
"store code" and you get all the sales. One place will even look you up with your phone number.

I think the easiest way, but most lilely not a surefire way to tell them apart is the leaf size, but also in general besides the leaves on the sasanquas being much smaller, the flowers in general are smaller. I couldn't give you "general" sizes as that could vary considerably for either type depending on growing conditions I'd suspect!! More than likely there's a fine point in the differences in flowers as that's often the determining factor in classifying what species a particular plant in a genus belongs. But sometimes it could be in the leaves or some other unexpected thing!!

The first has bloomed now, and I've posted pictures. I'm doing a time lapse video of these growing, so I think I have the light too far away to accommodate the cameras. They are under a 7" humidity dome, and the light is on top. If I didn't have to accommodate the cameras, I'd put the light about an inch or two away from the top of the plant.

Hi Bernard, I hope I don't repeat something because I only got about halfway through this thread before I got sick of reading and decided to go ahead and post. #1. I don't know where the idea come from that calloused roots are good. Callouses can't absorb water. It's dry scar tissue that keeps in/out moisture, thereby protecting broken stems and so on. When a plant's roots are partially exposed by wildlife digging, etc., the exposed portion callouses to keep the plant from dehydrating, but that calloused portion will never absorb water again. We don't want roots to callous (except maybe Bonsai growers who like to expose some roots over a rock or something). Putting a root system into dry mix is never good for it. I challenge anyone to prove how dehydrating or callousing a root system can possibly be good for it. The previous poster who said the dry mix will dehydrate the plant is correct. Always use damp mix for re-potting a healthy root system. If the roots are dead, it might be a different story. #2. As you've already learned, it's easy to under-water gritty mix. Since it's pretty close to impossible to over-water grit, I'm with the posters who say to soak it deeply and often. If you're paranoid, soak it daily, or even twice daily, but then give the pot a quick, little down-up motion to dislodge any perched water. That way it'll always be just barely moist. If it were mine, and planted in grit, I'd just water every day or two until the roots are well-established. As one who has killed off whole, healthy root systems by under-watering grit (once weekly), I feel confident in telling you that you're extremely unlikely to drown a plant in grit. I'm watering my succulents daily right now, and some are STILL too dry. BTW, Danny, I think mentioned he prefers soil for jades. I don't disagree with him. The one I have in soil has grown much better than the ones I have in grit. Furthermore, the Aeonium I had in a 1:1 soil:pumice mix has a huge, beautiful, healthy root system. The big one in grit has puny roots. These aren't experiments with standardized variables, so something else might be going on, but for now, I'm also not certain that grit is always a better medium.

When I lived in CA, I had a Safeway Club card and if you did not have your card with you, you could just use your phone number. When I was out there a couple of months ago I ran into Safeway to pick up a couple of items and one was on sale with the club card. I gave the cashier my old phone number and when she handed me the receipt she said "Thank you Mrs. Whatever it was". I told my son about it and he said he always gives that number and they call him Mr. Whatever. We both had to laugh about it. We had that phone number for 25 years.

Some people are just plain rude.

So...here is my rude person of the week.

Our program at work loans out textbooks to the students who can't afford them. I told all the students that the books were due back on Dec 16th by 3:00 pm. If they were late I said I would put a hold on their account for the price of the book until it was returned. I also told them that I would be going on vacation and if a hold was placed then they would have to wait until Janurary 2nd for the hold to be removed.

So I had 2 students who did not return their books on time so I placed the holds. The first student I found out decided to get married the day they were due back. Haven't heard from her yet but she will not get grades until I remove the hold.

The 2nd student sent me an email saying "What are your hours over the holiday break. I have been working full time and couldn't get up to return the books."

No..."hey I am so sorry I am late" or anything. AND..."what are my hours"!!!!! I replied with "I will be on vacation as of 3:00 pm today". She has to wait until January now.

Oh....and what are the chances of me loaning her any more books?????

SamKaren, I think you might be reading a little more into that email than it really is. :) It doesn't sound rude to me. She probably doesn't realize that it was an inconvenience to you or that you're going to be out for two weeks. Usually when people are on an extended vacation, there's someone who covers for them for these reasons. And yes, you told her but I know I'm guilty myself of forgetting what people say. It's a combination of a bad memory and often being distracted.

I hope you reconsider not lending her anymore books if the program is for kids who can't afford to buy their own. She needs it and I would give her the benefit of the doubt. They're just late, not damaged. The holidays are stressful enough, especially with finals, working full time and all the other things that are going on, and I'm sure she just forgot.

Just another perspective.

I hope that wasn't a disabled parking spot and the markings were snow covered! In any event, shame on the truck for sloppy parking.

no no no..was not a handicap spot...I would never! They all have signs in front of them.

How sad for them that feel the need to hurt. I felt sad for them, honestly I did. My "Merry Christmas" was heartfelt.

My sister had a stranger wish her a Merry Christmas...then they added.."I love you"...LoL she said it really made her feel good. It was a young man, and her son passed away in October, and she is missing him.

I was a bit shy about asking the man at the next checkout if he had a card I could use, but in a way, I think I did it to give him a chance to "give". And, maybe I needed some conformation that there are GOOD people out there. After the little abuse I'd gotten, I enjoyed the gift of kindness.

There's no excuse for obscene gestures like that.

I got a ticket on campus for straddling the line back in the day. However, when I parked there it was one space in a long line of filled spaces. I just happened to be the last one out after an evening class. Everyone else had to have been over the line too. Just my bad luck.

that always reminds me of the scene in fried green tomatoes...in the parking lot...

i had a lady waiting for me to move and i blocked this teeny bopper from stealing the space...she flipped me off as well!

Perhaps I should have mentioned that the students know that the school is closed for the break so there is no one to cover for us.

Plus when I loan them books I put a reminder (on bright yellow paper) in the book with the date and time the book is due back. Then I send them an email reminder the week before. On the final due date I again email them saying "book is due by this time".

In my opinion she had no excuse for being late. It was not only an inconvenience because I can not do my final inventory but I have a student waiting for the book to borrow.

As far as the one who got married...she got all the same reminders.

Unless my boss overrides me on this they will not get books from me.

BTW...I have other students who have never returned books to me. The holds are still on their accounts and they will not get transcripts if they ever decide to transfer.

I once had a student turn in her book that her boyfriend destroyed. When she went to replace it she tried to pass me an old edition (which wasn't being used). Told her that was no good and she still had to pay for it.

... invite the lady and her companion to join you, while you push all of the other miscreants' vehicles sideways, off of the lines, to occupy only one space ...

... so that you can inhabit only one space.

That way - she and her buddy get one, as well.

Or ... next time you trade cars ... get a narrower one?
