Are you hard of hearing?

From the new Coscto flyer there is a way to pick out CD's that you can read. Person said she was hearing impaired and needed help.

The Costco media buyer went directly to Paramount pictures and they told her that 90% of their product is closed captioned and has CC logo on the back of the movie case or on the spine. Twentieth Century Fox say their DVD;s have closed caption and Universal says they offer English SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Sony includes CC on most of the north American DVD.

I love, love, love subtitles, and so does my 29-year-old daughter. Don't know why, but I have trouble hearing movies these days. Back in the day, actors made a point of speaking SO NICE AND CLEAR and now they slur their words.

My brother and his wife had a fit when we watched a movie together and I turned on the subtitles. So then I watched the movie without my beloved subtitles, unable to hear 40% of the dialogue.

They say us babyboomers are showing up in the audiologists officers in droves. Those Hi-Fi stereos and those comfy super big headphones were trouble, I guess.

I, too, love subtitles; I have a hearing loss that really bugs me when I watch movies, particularly British films. I have Netflix and just had to send one back without watching the whole thing. I forget to turn it off sometimes, and then commercials are sub-titled!

I would suggest you contact the Canadian Hearing Society. I'm sure there is such a thing as a blinker for the phone and they can point you in the right direction. They can also tell you how to access grants for it. Health Canada has programs that help mitigate the cost of hearing aids and other medical devices so I'm sure there must be help for a blinker. I try not to use the "I'm busy" to often. I think it makes my friends feel like they aren't important. I tend to say a certain week or month, lets catch up or do someones birthday. Lately I have felt overwhelmed and I hate it. It's graduation & party crunch time, scholarship assisting, school activities have simmered down thank goodness, but the farming has stepped up X5. Oh and we are adding a whole new wing to our house. DH is doing most of the work between farming and I'm the designer. HA, sounds glamorous but it seriously isn't! Subbing at school has been few and the caller must be frustrated at my refusal to work. I am blessed to be able to enjoy the fruits of our labor but its been a long haul, we don't know what weekend fun is. My friends have been so good, they will offer their hands to help me. You bet I'm using them at DD's graduation open house! that's what friends are for. ~~I agree we are all busy. But if my friends NEED me I'll try to be there for them someway, like they are for me.

I used to do all white trim (I get bored with too much wood) but I have sort of slipped in the townhouse into dark painted trim. Mine is a deep coffee bean color (it's 50/50 black and brown). I adore it. I would use it again in any home verses going with white...ok maybe not every place, but the next 1980's townhouse I own :) It is so rich and elegant...I just can't imagine white in comparison being half as cool. That being said, I favor rich deep earth tones in my decor so the deep trim fits that. If I were a pastel beachey girl, my dark trim would give out to white or off white in a heart beat. I also change trim to suit the room. In the victorian we are going to paint my son's already painted trim (someday I'll strip it) in a deep navy tone. I'm doing that because the white trim now looks terrible against the mahogany doors. In the nursery I'm going to probably leave the trim white, but it may go into a soft tan or light brown even to compliment the decor. If you are going to use more than one trim, I'd keep it even in the rooms it's used (white trim white frame, not white and another color) but I'd also be sure to make changes in other rooms in the house so that the new part does not scream "ADDITION" because it's the only room with painted trim.

My husband and I are both "hard of hearing". Of course sometimes it's selective hearing...But watching a movie on TV is hard...

I use those "TV Ears" much of the time. Sorta pricy,($79 at Costco( and I broke the first pair, but they work ok for a movie or two. They are not very light weight...wish that I had one of those "one ear" thingys with a cord. But the TV ears do let you move around with them.
BTW the background music etc. is really loud with those, as well as commercials...........Nanny

I'm on my way there. Most of my mom's side of the family wears hearing aids and I know my hearing isn't 100%.

My husband has head phones (wireless) for his TV. It's the only way, for me not to hear what he is watching. His hearing loss is from pistol shooting in the mid seventies. Lots of times, they just didn't wear ear protection.

I will have to look for these. I have hearing loss from when I was a child. Hearing aids won't work for me.

Thanks for the info. I probably drive my DH crazy by asking him to jack up the sound so loud.

DH and I use the captioning almost all the time, especially for DVDs from Britian. (Anybody else notice a liberal use of alcohol in their TV productions?)

I know I have hearing loss -- worse in one ear than the other -- unable to distinguish the location of a sound I hear. I think the TVs today, with their big sound systems, muddy dialogue. However, we have to ask to have the sound turned DOWN in some movie theaters, so maybe we Seniors hear better than many?

I always have trouble with foreign accents, sometimes I see Indian doctors who "mumble". I ask them to repeat all the time. I also have trouble with my husband, who has a neurological problem and trouble speaking. I went to an audiologist, who told me I can't hear high-pitched sounds, that my hearing loss is very common in people over 50. I am 56. I'm not ready for a hearing aid. But if it gets worse, to the point I can't understand normal,conversations, then I will look into hearing aids.

Oh man, us Babyboomers are all getting that way -- but wow! the kids with the ipod, etc. with the ear buds are going to be worse off than us...
