I love my Garmin Nuvi 1350.

I believe the 205 model is on sale now at Target for $99. That's the one we started with. It allows you to display either text turn-by-turn directions, or a 3-D map which you can zoom in or out, depending on your preference. The voice tells you when to turn and recalculates your route if you don't do what he/she says (LOL). You can choose the most economical (shortest distance) route or bypass the highways. There are several other options too.

You get a free download of maps (ours is the US) and then after that there is a charge to update them, probably once a year or even less depending on your travel needs.

You can download lake maps if you're going to spend time on the water, which shows coves, marinas, etc. My son wants that download for the Lake of the Ozarks, it's included in the Midwest grouping. I believe the cost is around $110 but since lakes don't change configuration he's figuring it's a one-time cost.

We use it just to get around in Kansas City, since we rarely go downtown. It's been very helpful just for that.

A higher priced model provides traffic alerts which I think would be nice. We didn't realize that when we bought ours, or we'd have checked it out.

I would recommend the Garmin as well. Consumer Reports recommends it as well.

I got my DH the Garmin Nuvi 755 widescreen last year for just under $200 and he feels it's better than the $2,100 GPS Nav system that came with my '09 BMW.

I love my TomTom 510.

Garmin user here, too. I bought a TomTom, but took the blasted thing back - too difficult to operate, IMHO. Garmin is so easy for me to operate.

I have a pink Garmin Nuvi 200. It is a very basic model and I have had it for a few years now. It doesn't do as much as the newer models can do but I still love it. Gets me where I need to go. :)

My brother recently bought a Garmin 255WT. I used it on Sat to drive from one Estate Sale to another with a friend. I recommend it highly. It's user friendly, has a 4.3 screen and free lifetime traffic alerts, a service that the Magellan wanted to charge a monthly fee to use. It was $169 on sale at Best Buy, I've seen it on sale since also.

Magellan. User friendly.
Go to somewhere that has them on display (like Costco) and play with each one to see which is best for you.

Another Garmin lover, I have built in GPS on all vehicles and on my phone but also have a garmin, had them in rental cars, they can find any place and so easy to use. Got one for our oldest for Christmas.

love our garmins

Even I learned how to do the Garman, and you can update it each year if you wish.
If you live in the country, where there are unmarked roads it will work.

I have had a Garmin for a couple of years now and I take it with me when I travel anyplace I'm going to rent a car. I was able to buy a card that had maps of Europe for it and used it when driving around Italy last year.

i just got a new one after turkey-day, Garmin 1350t (lifetime traffic and map updates free) at Target for $175 w/ $10 gift card, a great deal! it's better than the GPS units my semi drivers use. the only thing it doesn't have is bluetooth but i have that w/ my after market car stereo ~ liz

I have Garmin. I call her Gabby because she talks all the time. I hate to read instructions. This is figure it out easy.

For a basic one, they're all pretty much comparable when you boil it all down. I bought a cheap one to see what I liked and if I would use it. It's been very handy a few times. I have a Magellan 2000. It's a good unit but like I say for the basic user, they're all going to be fine.
