GPS system for tree mapping
Comments (12)This is slightly different from what you are looking at, but is some ways appropriate. Using Google Earth you should be able to locate the position of the tree you planted with or with out GPS. Find the general area where the tree was planted and zoom into the area and find the nearly exact the location where you planted the tree. You can increase the accuracy of the position by measuring from two hard object that can be seen in Google Earth to the tree, then transfer those measurements to the Google Earth using the measuring function in Google earth. You can measure things in Google earth to the nearest foot.. Once you locate the trees you planted in Google Earth place a Placemark at the site of each tree. In the Placemark description you can place all of the statistics about the tree. While I have never seen, you can back up all of this information, and transfer it to other computers with Google Earth. These two files contain that information myplaces.backup.kml and myplaces.kml Copy them to the folder you want to use as a back up or copy them in the same Google directory on the other computer. If you install Google Earth you will be over writing the ones created on installation. In Window 8.1 they are located in C:\Users\account \AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth Account is the name of the user account. If you have an earlier version of Windows they are in the Application data. Or you can search for them use the above file name. I transferred the information to my Windows 8.1 computer from and Windows XP computer using this technique. I have used this exact procedure to locate ancestors graves to archive the location. I hope this proves to be useful. This post was edited by knuttle on Mon, Nov 18, 13 at 13:02...See MoreSafety of cars' keyless entry and ignition systems questioned
Comments (2)I agree. Autos with keyless start and run systems should have a kill switch in a standardized location. To do otherwise is dangerous. And that kill switch should duplicate the mechanical key-switch by having a direct mechanical link that cuts off power to the ignition. Interrupting the coil circuit of a relay (that might be stuck) is not positive enough. Pressing and holding the start buttom for a few seconds just won't do either. Hang onto your hats and crash helments; There's more in the pipeline. A few well known auto companies are developing steer by wire- that's right - No mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering linkage. Steering is accomplished by all electric drives or an electric-hydrulic arrangement. Does this mean you loose steering if you loose electrical power? I don't know, but I'd have to know a lot about any such systems before I drove it, and then I'd like to restrict it to a track, not a public road. Right now, it seems like a disaster waiting in the wings....See MoreAre we the only ones with GPS car charger failures?
Comments (5)It may not be your GPS charger, but could be the electrical system in your car. There are occasions when voltage spikes up 70 V have been recorded on 12 VDC auto systems. These spikes can kill unsuspecting electronics. One such event is stasrting the engine. Very large amounts of current is drawn by the starter and when this circuit is itgerrupted, large voltage spikes can occur in the power circuit between the solenoid contact and the starter motor. Normally, this does not get out into the general curcuits, but if someone has connected a lead to the starter solenoid terminal, it could be a problem. These types of voltage spikes are of short duration, and where they have found to cause trouble, a bypass capacitor may have been added to the system. Sometimes, the bypass capacitor fails or is removed when changing a component such as a starter motor. A second source is he starter motor itself. When the engine starts and the strater motor is still engaged, it can be spun by the engine past the speed where it becomes a generator and gives the electrical system a shot. You will note that car radios are powered off when the ignition key is turned to the start position. This done partly to maximize power for starting, but more so, to protect the radio from starting transients. You may have one or two power outlets in the cabin. One may be for a cigarette lighter and the other for accessories. The lighter socket may be hot at all times and is not a transient protected circuit. It is 'hot' with the key off. The accessory socket may be protected and may be off when the ignition key is off. Late model cars may dispense with the lighter socket and have only an accessory socket. What to do: Attach an oscilloscope to the power source you are using for the GPS unit and test for transients bwteen this source and vehichle ground. If you find transients more than 1.5 times system voltage, then snubbing is needed to protect your electronic accessories....See MoreGPS systems for big trucks
Comments (14)let me preface this by saying i am an expert in semi logistics, i route & ship more than $10 million worth of landscape plant materials ea yr, from south VA to the TX border, for the last 9 yrs. he CAN NOT use one that is a regular GPS, it MUST be only a model for semi trucks. he needs to check out the truck stops(or their websites), they sell the best ones and for the best prices. be prepared to spend lot more than any regular models, atleast $300-400. truck models have settings that come up w/ routes based on what roads, bridges and overpasses semi's can drive. using a car model GPS will soon get you a tix that will cost more than a weeks pay and add points to your license and make it difficult for the employer to get insurance coverage for you plus you will not be able to easily get jobs w/ points on your record. we do not hire drivers that have points on their record or have ever had any tix other than DOT trailer issues. i once had a lost driver get himself stuck on a steep declining residential road in Birmingham AL because he used a Garmin for cars. that tow cost $850, he was gone the next week. congrats to your son, i hope he really loves driving LOL! i used to have several drivers who had been w/ us for many many yrs but they all left over the last yr to drive for the same cross country hauler making $2000 a week and home on weekends too. there is $$ to make in that industry and it's only growing, gas prices will not affect it alot as people need their goods no matter what the cost. i would like to also suggest he get a very good bluetooth headset, not the cheapie kind everday people use, it needs to be one that wraps around the top of the head and has earphones w/ a boom speaker. my veteran drivers all have that one (all got at pilot truck stops i think) and it makes a tremendous difference in my ability to hear them w/ their windows open (they won't change that LOL) and in them being able to hear my loud mouth LOL. again congrats! if he's ever looking for something based in central fl or wants names of cross country hauling jobs send me an email! ~ liz...See MoreJmc101
