Just a little OT, but was wondering if anyone has any experience ordering from 6ave.com.

Looking at a GPS system.

I have no idea on the seller.

However the GPS seems an excellent price. I hope yours is louder than my MIO220s. To hear mine I really need a headset and I drive a minivan not any kind of tank and I am not deaf.

Be aware updates do not appear to be free either. My maps are 2 years old with no update in sight. Not that any main roads move but for local directions it seems mildly important.

I am looking at the TomTom920 and the price is the best I have found. A friend of mine has the 910 and loves it. I'm not really familiar with any of the GPS systems, so I'm trying to gather any information on the Garmin and TomTom. They seem to be the most popular. I do a lot of online shopping and always try to find someone who has purchased from the sites to see if they have good customer service, etc.

Thanks for the helpful information. I checked back to when I was given the $25K quote. It was shortly after October 13. I must have been so shocked I failed to write it down and reciting it from memory. I'm actually doing a 12+ acre development and each lot has corners to plot, and so on. This may have jumped the price some. The local bureaucarcy recently instituted a water run-off ordinance which can only be addressed with a topo. I don't know if this is common in other areas but it adds significant bucks to a developer's plan. I've read of GPS's having a temperature meter that coordiinates with its built-in barometer reading to offer help in giving the best altimeter reading possible. I think your idea of staying at a particular point for fifteen minutes or so to take several readings and to return to the same point a few times later on to take a few readings makes the most sense. At least one can average all the readings. It will take a while longer but if I could get the County to accept the readings it'll save some bucks. I've had a perimter survey done. A surveyor is to come in and do the lot corners and the road. What's left is topo data and that's what I hope to do myself. I've been reading about Garmins and Magellans. I appreciate the offer to call on you again and I may just do so once I get a unit. I've seen one at $349.00 that gives location within 3 meters but doesn't say anything about how well their temperature/barometer adjusted altimeter reading pans out. But, it may be what I can use. You have quite an imagination, chas. Maybe 15 years ago, I was on a trip to a Southern city I'd never been to before. I flew in the night before and found my hotel with directions from the car rental company. I got up in the morning needing to drive about 10 miles to an appointment. I asked the woman at the hotel's front desk how to get to 3600 XYZ Street, she gave me directions. As I got off the freeway, I realized something was wrong, I was in a seedy neighborhood (abandoned buildings, those not abandoned had bars over doors and windows) although I WAS in the 3600 block of XYZ street. I cautiously found a payphone (yeah, that long ago), made a call, and was informed that I must have gone to 3600 EAST XYZ Street instead of 3600 West XYZ Street. I sheepishly arrived 20 minutes late to my meeting. I'll refrain from describing my personal emotions that morning. As for your various silly scenarios, wrong destination details will always take you to the wrong place, whether you're using technology or asking for directions in a gas station. I've learned to get accurate information and a cross street, it helps. Devices don't break so suddenly as you would like to suggest. You should be happy using whatever method works for you. Personally, I won't own a car without a GPS system, and I have a portable one to use when I travel and rent cars. I've been using them for >10 years, daily and in far-flung places, and none of the things you mention have ever happened to me. A few silly routings, of course, that's part of the fun. Have I gotten lost or failed to arrive where desired? Never.

I suggest buying the Honda unit. They are very friendly and much easier to use with their larger displays and such than a portable unit. They also can't be stolen since they are part of the car (not easily anyway). If you do want to buy a portable unit, Garmen units are superb from ease of use. Like the Honda unit, they are pricier than the competition but work quite well (I have two).

In the early 2000s, we loaned a car to my MIL and put restrictions on where and how much she could drive - long story, won't get into it now. We had a GPS tracker installed, and bought a monthly service that enabled us to track where that car was at any moment. We had designated areas where she was permitted to go, and when the car went outside those areas, I would get an e-mail notification from the service. We could go to a computer program and watch the progress of the car on a map. it worked great. The e-mail reports came from usfleettracking.com US Fleet Tracking

it is cheaper on Buy.com and I buy from them all the time, never ever had a problem and shipping is super fast, often free and usually I can find a coupon code for % off on my purchase if I do a google search for "buy.com coupon"

here is a search on buy.com of other gps. they have some very good prices. I got a nextel gps from them and I love it, it does everything the big names do but was a lot cheaper it even has a remote control and we love it. Glad I did not spend extra for the name.

Thanks Raven...I purchased my refurbished Creative Lab Mp3 player from buy.com and am very satisfied with them. I had checked buy.com when I was looking at another GPS model and when I found the 920 at 6ave at such a good price, I never went back to buy.com to check their price on the 920.
