Mine is 37 years old. The binder is repaired with duct tape and the little tabs are all chewed off but it is still the one I go to if I want remember how to do something or where the best cuts of meat on the cow are. (I know, we don't eat the cow and yes I do call all soft drinks coke) I'm afraid to look at the new versions. Afraid it won't be as comprehensive. I know just where to go if mine comes up missing. My son is the cook in his family except for baking. Good luck in finding yours.

Ohhhhhhh I hope you find it. I would be hartbroken if my Joy of Cooking disappeared. It is from the 40's, was a wedding gift to my mom and it too is all duct taped, stained and many pages are dog earred. My brother bought me the newest edition a few years ago but I still go to the original first, I love that book.

I have my Good Housekeeping from 45 years ago.
Backing gone, lots of pages missing, index half gone, but I will NOT part with it!

I bought clear page protectors and put my ANCIENT baking book in them, and in a three ring binder. :)

My Grandma was a chef for area luxury resorts and supper clubs. When I was first married and couldn't cook very well, she gave me her 1945 Searchlight cookbook. I still use it often. I bought a Rumsford baking book several years ago that was printed in 1923. I also have a very old Betty Crocker cook book in addition to others.

I'd be lost without my Better Homes and Garden's cb. Dad received it from the bank when he took a loan in the 60's. I bought a new one a few years ago (Merry Christmas to me!)but it's just not the same. My other favorite one is the King Arthur Flour cb my DH bought for me. And my other fav is the Victory Garden cb (1982)

It seems like the older books are so much better that the new versions. I gave my New Joy of cooking book away, because the older one has the receipes I use and some are not in the new one.
If you cannot find it, let us know and I bet someone will find one at a used book store, garage sale or auction sale.In fact, I had one, but gave it our local library. Check the thrift stores also

I have The American Everyday Cookbook, by Agnes Murphy, Food Editor, New York Post. It begins with Basic Definitions that have been very helpful to me. Also things like Substitutes for ingredients, etc.

I is 6X9X1.5, hard cover, copyrighted 1955. I have used it a lot as is evident by the condition of the yellowed, tattered and brittle pages.

My favorite is a 6X9 inch hardback ring notebook that my DH gave me one day, probably 50 years ago. He would often come in from work with something that he had seen and thought I would like. It was made for recipes with dividers, etc. I wrote recipes in it and pasted others over the years. It is also well worn now, but still very dear to me.

My oldest cookbook is a Better Homes and Gardens red checked goodie, also falling apart. Stained and some pages torn or missing. I used to call my mother and mother in law for help.

I have many others, collected over the years, and don't use many of them today. I quit cooking when my husband died.

I have one by Amy Vanderbilt tht I loved too. Has a recipe for Baked Cheese Eggs that was so good we retitled it "Sin Eggs". Love the Victory Garden Vegetable book too.
And all those little homemade church cookbooks.

Hope you find yours soon. Those splotches and wrinkles are dear to our hearts.

I know it's not the same but Betty Crocker has reprinted many of their older books and original copies of older cookbooks aren't that hard to come by online. At least you'll have the recipes.

I have an Amy Vanderbilt cookbook and I had to go look at the Baked Cheese Eggs recipe. It does sound sinful. My son tested for a slight egg allergy so we avoid anything heavy on the eggs but if he passes a challenge someday, I'll be making those.

I love my old Betty Crocker CB my aunt gave me in the late 50s. I also love the Sunset Favorite Recipes cookbook I got from a bank too. And then I bought a version of my mom's old 1930s CB on Ebay for my sister after I spied one on my friend's bookshelf and she gave it to me-- The Settlement Cookbook: The Way to a Man's Heart. It is such a thorough cookbook. I also like Joy of Cooking and Fannie Farmer. And some of the Junior League cookbooks are really good too--Pasadena especially.

I have misplaced my bubble lights for my tree. I was just up in the attic looking for them. I couldn't find them last year either but found them this summer and said "that's where they were" I thought I would remember what spot they were in but do you think I can???? I have looked in every spot I thought they were and they aren't there. Grrrrr - I'll have to go up and look again.

I found something else up there I hadn't seen in a long, long time and instead of continuing looking for the bubble lights I came downstairs to look at what I found.

I found my Grandma's 1902 cookbook called Mother's Cook Book. My oh my, you should read some of the stuff in this book. Not just recipes but cures - did you know you can cure the croup in a minute? LOL Tried and true cures for the day I guess. There is a a paragraph on How to be Handsome, How Unselfish Wives make Selfish Husbands. There is even a section on how to store eggs to last you a year and how to roast a partridge, make head cheese the way my Grandpa did with the head - but make sure you remove the eyeballs first. LOL The book even has a cure for drunkeness. LOL

I have spent the last 2 hours reading through the books and turning the crumbling pages carefully. It sure has been interesting reading.

Anyone need any cures of recipes from 1902?

Got varmints in your hair or childblains? This book has a cure. How about Rules for Eating or Those Ungraceful Habits. Housekeeping, cosmetiques, beauty, sewing, making skirts and sleeves, marketing, etc.

I have been having fun reading this when I should be putting the lights on my tree!

Angela ~ I sure hopr your cookbook shows up. It would bother me greatly too if my old favorites came up missing. When I was 14, back in 1961, I used to babysit for a family in our neighborhood. Everytime the people came home I had the kids in bed asleep and I was on the couch reading their Red and White checked cookbook. They finally gave it to me and I still have it and use it. it is my all time favorite.

From Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Cookbook

Baked Cheese-Eggs

2/3 cup mayonnaise
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 cup milk
1 cup grated processed American cheese
6 eggs
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Start oven at moderate (350)
Combine mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire in saucepan. Add milk gradually, stirring until smooth. Add cheese. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until cheese melts and mixture is thick and smooth, about 5 minutes.

Put 2 tablespoons cheese mixture in each of 6 custard cups. Break an egg into a saucer, slip egg into each cup. Add another 2 tablespoons cheese mixture to each cup. Sprinle 1/2 tablespoon Parmesan on top of each. Set cups in shallow pan containing a little water.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Serve at once. Makes 6 servings.

A brunch favorite. Serve toasted scones or English muffins with these eggs. Canadian bacon and baked apple or half a grapefruit complete this menu.

(Amy really wrote good directions! Hope you enjoy these. I have not made them in years, but I remember they were wonderful, if very rich!)

I would so like to give you Main Man's Betty Crocker collection that belonged to his 90 year old mother. They are so old and ratty looking. Each edition is so repetive I can't believe she kept buying them.

I use them as reference for measurements, temperature and timing. Also, has every sauce you can think of.

Still haven't found it. SIL says she hasn't seen it. Stef hasn't called me back. It's not just the cookbook itself, but all the other little recipes I have tucked in there. And my notes in the margins about little changes made to favorite recipes over the years. Had to make cornbread from a recipe on the back of the bag because I can't find my favorite, old, recipe. It just wasn't the same. Dry and overdone.
That cookbook is ALWAYS put back in the same spot when I'm done with it. This really irritates me. SIL stayed at my apartment for about 3 weeks while I was house-sitting for a friend. When I got home, my whole kitchen had been re-arranged. I was not/am not a happy camper.

If she had the odasity to change/rearrange YOUR kitchen while a guest in your home, she may have tossed your cookbook, and not dare to own up to it when she heard/saw how much it means to you. She may have been thinking "this ratty old thing, she can get a new copy" I have 2 "ratty old things" and if someone EVER takes them before I am dead and burned, there will be heck to pay!
