Another Christmas Present for Me!

This Christmas season just keeps getting better and better. LOL First was my Christmas present to myself - my new fabulous washing machine and now the best Christmas present of all - I don't have to cook Christmas dinner this year!!! Yay for me.

My sister Lizzie will be having family Christmas dinner this year. I don't have to cook. She doesn't want anyone to bring anything either but of course I will bring Christmas baked goods.

The pressure is off. Last Christmas I was making the make ahead gravy early in the am when there was the knock on my door and a snow covered stranger was standing there telling me she was a neighbour and was locked out of her house. I invited her in and while I continued cooking she sat at my kitchen table and proceeded to put her make up on while waiting for someone to bring her a key (how brazen was she?)I had never even me her before but this year I won't be making make ahead gravy at 6 am. I will be in my bed sleeping.

The only other way Christmas can get any better is if my niece Meagen comes home for the holidays.

I will still cook a turkey breast between Christmas and New Year for sandwiches. I always have lots of company between those dates and hopefully Meagen will be staying here like when she was little.

Now I can just focus on baking my Christmas cookies. I just might make and decorate gingerbread men for my Great niece and nephews.

The pile can catch fire if there is no moisture, and the heat can drive off a lot of moisture too (the steam you saw). If the material is not moist, sprinkle it with the hose. It takes quite a lot of water to soak all the way down into it. If you are moving the pile, you can add a little water as you go, spraying it each time you add 6 inches worth. I live in a very dry climate and I have to water all my compost, what little I do any more. Mostly I just spread it out as mulch beds and that does not heat up or catch fire. But for piles, I run an oscillating sprinkler, the kind that tap tap tap around, one hour for every foot thick. Then I check how far down the water has penetrated and run more as needed.

Being semi-retired from the breeding game, we only have 3 dogs at the moment... one lives out in the kennel, and the other two are inside, with us. At one point, before our house burned, we had about 40 bulldogs. We're getting too old to care for that many dogs... and besides, Larry has taken the breed as far as he wanted to, genetically speaking. Our dogs are allowed everywhere... the sofa, the bed... although, they seem to like to nap in their crates, which is fine by me! When your life has been all about dogs, you tend to not notice a little fur, or a few paw prints, or a nose mark on a window... it's all part of the deal! Larry works with everything... except wood. He's my electrician, plumber, tech guy, hairdresser, chef, mechanic, etc... but he does not do carpentry! You're lucky to have found a real cabinet maker to do that woodwork for you... it's very well made, from what I can see. Our entire apartment is a catchall! I wish Larry wasn't such a pack rat! But if I clean up his stacks of stuff, he gets mad and says he can't find anything! LOL! What's your Corgi's name? Boy or girl, or have you mentioned it before and I just can't remember? Well... Larry's up north until Friday, so I'm gonna catch up on a little cleaning while he's out of my hair! :-) Can't wait to see that bulb open it's buds!

When my kids were very little (before being able to read), I had different paper for each child. Then my husband and I could relax on the couch and they would know which gifts they could open without us having to read the tag on each one. (Am I lazy or what? ) It also makes wrapping go much faster if you have the gifts presorted by person and don't have to change paper for each gift. In our family, Santa brings each child one big thing and the rest of the gifts are from mom and dad. I buy special paper for the gifts from Santa (usually with pictures of Santa on it). I make gift tags with "special" writing and these gifts are placed under the tree separately for the other gifts. That paper never makes another appearance. Santa also leaves each child a letter about their behavior and accomplishments for the past year. It's getting harder to pull this off each year. Happy Holidays!

I was going to just cancel my order from Kohls but got an email this morning that it has already been shipped! Wow. I 99% sure I'll be returning it. I found one at Walmart, it is a Better Homes and Gardens brand, with 118 5-star ratings and 9 1-star. I feel better about this one. Live and learn, trying to get a jump on things and jumped a tad too fast on this one..... Oh well, I'll still have it bought way ahead of time.

I am happy my sister wants to do this. Before she moved to Saudi Arabia years ago she used to have Christmas dinner or at least brunch at her place and she would have everything decorated so nice and her table was so festive. She's a nurse so it is also nice she doesn't have to work this Christmas.

Now that I don't have to do Christmas I might plan on having a New Years day brunch.

I am happy you don't have to cook Christmas dinner.
Have a great time with your family. Is this the sister who had breast cancer? How is she doing....sounds like she is doing very well.

Carol, I've put England on hold until at least spring but if there is a federal election call I will most likely go in the summer. If I am away and the election is called I would have to come right home to do my job. That is the problem with our Parliamentary system - the party in power is always one house vote away from an election.

Both my sisters have had breast cancer. Lizzie had double breast cancer and was treated by the best doctors while living in Saudi Arabia. She has nerve damage in her neck from the radiation that affects the nerves in her hands and she has already lost quite a bit of hand function in both of them so she figures this will be the last Christmas dinner she will be able to cook on her own. My other sister Marjorie has had breast cancer twice - 2 different kinds in the same breast which she had removed last summer.

I find myself wondering how she managed to have her makeup with her when she locked herself out of her house at 6:00 in the morning...

LOL Lindsey, she was on her way to work and locked her keys in the car - she couldn't get into the house or into her car. She had her bag with her and her coke so while she was waiting for her boyfriend she sat and put her make up on. I couldn't even imagine drinking coke that early in the morning either but she said she didn't like coffee.

I wondered about the makeup too and she said she usually puts it when she gets to work. She leaves the house early because she worked in a nearby town.
