Thanks for reminding us about Pearl Harbor Day. It's not a day that should be forgotten. My Dad left Pearl Harbor on the 5th for the Philapines.

DH's uncle was on the USS Arizona.I was born 7 days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.I can only imagine how scarry a time that must have been for my mom.
On a lighter note,look at the legs on those guys swabbing that deck! They were in good shape huh? LOL

Happy Birthday and yes I remember Pearl Harbor. We lived in Ventura CA and I thought those islands just off the coast, (I think they are the Anacappa Islands, was Pearl Harbor I was only 9 years old and I was real scared because I thought we would be attacked. I was not far off as the oil wells that were between Ventura and Santa Barbara were shelled by Japanese subs, but to this day, no one will admit it.
Yes we all had black shades, and did not travel at night.
My dad was too young for WWI and too old for WWII but did work for a defense company after we moved to Inglewood CA.
He helped make the P 51 etc.

Glad some of the rest of you have memories of that day, too. I was 11 that day, and spent the afternoon playing in a grassy field with my cousins. Lots of beautiful sunshine, just like it is here today. I had no idea where Hawaii was, and certainly couldn't pronounce it! My 3 brothers went to the service soon after, but we were thankful that they all came home. Daddy had been wounded in WWI so that was a nervous time. We gathered around the battery radio each night for the news.

I did have a fine day today, and I thank you all for the good wishes and for the reminiscing. (Wish I knew how to spell that! LOL)

Thank you to all our military and to their families for sharing them. You are our heroes, and we know we owe you a debt of gratitude that a thank you does not fulfill. Nevertheless, thank you everyone who has ever served our country. We are so proud of you!

I remember December 7, 1941!! I was 5 yrs old almost 6. I remember well that day....my older brothers and their friends, and the two guys that worked for my Dad.....all of us in the dinning room that afternoon, they were all concerned. Six months later my brothers were in service and most of the guys that gathered in our dinning room that Dec 7th afternoon.

Fifty years later our two sons were in the USMC and stationed at West Loch, Pearl Harbor, our daughter went to Hawaii to spend the 50 yrs celebration with her brothers.The two boys were so proud to participate in the parades and ceramonies that took place.

During the 50th DH and I sat at home remembering those 3 little kids playing on our farm not even knowing what Pearl Harbor meant, and yet they all 3 were in Hawaii together December 7, 1991. Today 16 years later they all are very patiotic and this family supports our troops.
Merry Christmas to each and everyone of them.

I have a very faint memory of Pearl Harbor and I was not quite two years old. I can picture my father at the table listening to the radio.

Hope it was a great birthday for you!! I wasn't around for Pearl Harbor...but my Mom told me the story growing up...She was 9 months pregnant with my sister...lived in farm community in Indiana...they ran to my grandpas as he had a radio...they were so panic'd not knowing if America was gonna be bombed...what was gonna happen...I didn't really realize the feelings she was going thru until 9/11...after that day, I knew EXACTLY how my mom felt...

I was too small to know what was really happening but remember asking my parents why they had tears on their cheeks. Dad used to take us to the train Depot to greet the troop trains. He was too young for WWI & too old for WWII and told us it was the only way he knew to do his part. I snuggled on my Dad's lap each night as Gabriel Heater give the news- it was so scary to me. But not one of us 3 kids dared speak until it was over- if we did, we'd get a look & hushed! Daddy didn't have to utter a word. Children behaved tht way back then.

I very clearly recall people running out of homes and businesses laughing, dancing and shouting "The war is OVER, the war os OVER!"

My 81 y/o BIL recently told his GS & me of being ordered to clear a jammed gun barrel on a battleship that had been hit. He stopped, got a far away look that lasted for some time, and finished with sobs & tears running down his cheeks as he told of removing only parts left of two sailors bodies. My DS was shocked- in their 60 of marriage, he'd never told her.

When my cousin returned from Germany, sometimes he'd just get up during a meal & quickly leave the table. After I was grown my Dad told he'd fought all the way through the country, then to concentration camps to free Jewish prisoners. He must have seen unspeakable horrors- but never spoke of any of it, at least to my knowledge.

Makes me sick to hear sports figures & such called heroes...the REAL Heroes are or have been on the battlefields, fighting fires, criminals or saving lives. May God ever Bless them all!

I was a five month old fetus on December 7, 1941. I was born April, 1942. I grew up hearing my parents talk about Pearl Harbor Day. I always remember the date.

One of my brothers recently told me of visiting a concentraton camp after the war. Like gritty's BIL, had not mentioned it all this time. Said it affected him so much he almost passed out and had to get out of there. But not a word until recently.

You're right, Suzi, the real heroes aren't the ones kicking up a fuss today.
