The impossible tablecloth

Does anyone here use, enjoy, want, and search for nice tablecloths?

I have a 36" diameter pedestal breakfast table in front of the south livingroom window. Right now the 30" high and wide Christams tree is on the table. It's lovely, except I need a floor lenght cloth on the table to make the tree really stand out.

I need to find a 96" diameter table cloth in ivory, green, or red. I do not want it to have seams. I want it to be heavy and mostly cotton. I don't want it to shrink, fade, or pull apart like so many of the new tablecloths do.

I've searched on line to no avail. I found some restaurant supply cloths, but they were mostly polyester and had no hem detail.

Would there be an advantage to a poly-blend over a heavy cotton? What is the difference between spun poly and poly fiber?

Any suggestions?

I'm so thankful I purchased vintage Quaker Lace tablecloths before eBay went down hill. I have three ivory lace cloths to fit the table in each of its phases - regular size, with one extension, or with both extensions. These are rectangular, so they won't work for the Christmas table.

Do you sew? Maybe you could make one. If not maybe you could buy the cloth and have someone make it for you. I don't know how wide material is but it seems like it would be hard to make one 96" in diameter without a seam.

96 inch wide fabric plus enough more to hem it would be nearly impossible to find, it seems to me. But, you could buy a bedsheet and cut a cloth from it. I just don't know where you would find 97 inch wide fabric otherwise. You are taliking 8 feet wide with a little extra for hemming. If you add trim or a ruffle, the fabric could be a little narrower.

I wonder if upholstery fabric comes that wide

Of course, bed sheets are not made of heavy fabric, so maybe you could find a bedspread that is not too heavy and is wide enough without seams. Cotton does shrink and a mix with polyester helps prevent so much shrinking.

I sold my house yesterday and put an offer on a house about two weeks ago so I see selling and buying from two perspectives. First, as a seller, you don't want to spend money for a house you are leaving. But, if you would rearrange your furniture a bit, take down the wall paper, also add a few decorative accessories-not a bunch of little things, but a few well placed bigger things with real impact. Also, I like you drapes, but modern buyers would consider that a bit dated. Everything now a days is sheer, light open etc. I got sheer material from Walmart and made simple drapes-$1.00 a yard. They look great-like silk. If you don't sew, you can use glue. Add a few flowers to your yard. A buyer wants to just move in these days. As a buyer, I was looking for a clean house, I didn't want to take on a bunch of projects. I wanted move in ready. I am not your normal buyer as I am willing to replace carpeting, paint etc. My new family room has hideous wood paneling, but I still bought it. The price was right. In a more expensive house I would have requested that the sellers provide a bit of money for this. I don't know if you are pricing aggressively or trying to get top dollar that makes a difference too. Watch designed to sell, they have great tips. I don't mean the crazy stuff-ripping out bathrooms, but furniture arrangement, accessories etc.

Oh Debbie, you are such a hoot! I love your postings. I've been busy all afternoon searching for, and taking photos of, "things" and ideas I have for the miniscule nook. Hopefully I'll get them all found before too long. The table is a done deal. The photos posted above are 4-5 years old. He took the table apart, but we did not polish or change the metal finish. I gave the brass plated iron base a it a light wash, polished it with a dry cloth, and now use Swiffers to dust it. It looks just like it did except for the caked-on dust it came with. As for the maple top - yes, the old glue, finish, stampings, everything, on the top, bottom, and 2" thick edges of the table were scraped and sanded smooth, cleaned, and sealed with some sort of wood finish. You can see in the fourth photo where the top had been damaged and messily "fixed" with mass quantities of glue. Wes scraped and sanded that, and now you can barely see where it was repaired. In the first post on this thread, the very last photo showing the table in front of the old window (before the walls were painted and the nasty carpet ripped out) is the finished product and how the table looks today. If you come to visit, I will remove the tablecloth(s) and you can dine in bare maple splendor, but until then it will be enhanced, embellished, accessorized, swaddled, covered, layered, and cozy under a plethora of vintage linens! :)

Ok, when I talked to my mother awhile back she thought the tablecloth on her table now is 60 x 84 oval, but I found out her table may be oblong(rectangle with round edges). Since I don't want her to know that I'm definitely getting her a tablecloth, would the oblong work on either shape table or the oval? Also, what size exactly should I get? She thinks the one she has is 60x84, but could I go a size bigger to make sure it fits? She said she wouldn't mind it a bit longer, just not too long.

So much about dining rooms lately on Houzz, yay, and to (loosely) quote Julia Child, there are those who feed and those who dine. I prefer that second group, given the chance. My dining room has a big window but it is shaded by an overhang, which we need here in the southwest, so I always was on the lookout for some glass. I wanted to draw light in with a centerpiece. I recently found this reasonable piece of Polish glassware. I don't like the Chihuly-style wavy bowls I see around, and most other artisan glass is way out of my price range, though worth it, I know. I shopped for some vintage glass online for a while which was a fun time-waster, but didn't pan out in the end. I used to display a nice vintage candelabra, but with forced air it's just impossible to maintain tapers - which I do love. I've settled for the two votives for now. Work in progress - as always.

I thought about using a king-size flat sheet. That would give me enough material to cut a one-piece round cloth from, but I wonder if sheeting material would be thick enough for a sturdy tablecloth.

I even thought about using a matelasse bedspread to cut the table covering from, but would that be too heavy?

Could you put a red or green sheet or felting UNDER a lace or crochet cloth?

If you have the pocketbook you can find and get anything! I redecorated my boss' South Beach condo last spring, from linens on up! If you google "custom tablecloths" you will get many hits. This is the company I used.

Have you tried Crate & Barrel? Don't know if they
have them -- but they have a lot of things - online,
if you don't have a store near.

You can always get a big sheet and cut it the way you want it and just glue the hem with sewing glue and make it long enough to fold under theedges when on the table
