We've made it!

Six months in this weekend trailer as of tomorrow. We've recovered from a con job. Our home is not complete but good enough to get our things and sleep in our own beds.

Tomorrow the movers come.

Today missing in action are the trades to get the home systems installed and running. No plumber, no electrician, no propane. So no running water, no shower, toilet or washing machine. New appliances but no power for them. We'll still have to use the contractor toilet at -11 with the wind. (I can say some really funny things about this but I'm not sure they are anywhere near good taste like the wind making you whistle).

But we have contractor heaters keeping the house warm and preventing our concrete floor from cracking and the radiant floor tubes from getting damaged. As of tomorrow evening we will have our own beds! Our recliners, kitchen table.

Thursday we have our wood stove being installed.

After six months living face to face we are still married, deeply in love (we pull each other along). We appreciate the little little things more. My DH got called for a job interview next week. As far as I'm concerned I can wait still for the trades to get here and finish things. We've made it in my books.

I am still learning not to sweat the small stuff so much.

We have made new friends all around us. This rural community has been here for us the last 6 months. We look forward to being there for all of them too.

We are blessed. It was hard with more to come in lawsuits moving forward on our behalf. Our cat has adapted and is mentally well. He's moving into a giant floor hockey arena (to me after the trailer)...bottle caps will become hockey pucks.

And you know I ready to leave the trailer when the idea of washing a window, washing the floor is something I'm looking forward to.

We have dear friends and family in Edinburgh Scotland. Now they are having an even harder time with major hardships that is not normal for them.

I can't complain about things at all. We are fortunate enough to still have living money in the bank and choices in life.

We have friends here going thru the same problems, with 2 little ones and another one on the way. Temps around 0 now and snow every day. In there case not a real bad contractor, but poor judgement as it is a modular home. Hurry up and wait.

I'll see if I can dig up some of (Vlad's) thornless blackberry for you. You've got a lot of picky stuff happening. I wanted to share a poison ivy tip with you that I figured out myself, the hard way. Poison ivy is an oil. Urshol, I think it's spelled. You might have gotten rid of it this year, but it's tenacious! Anyway, a degreaser addresses oil. Not bleach, sand, or other caustic stuff. They don't cut oil. So take Dawn dishwashing liquid and liberally spread it all over yourself like suntan lotion. Pay attention to neck, ankles, wrists, etc. Let it dry. Go do your thing in the garden. When you come in, either smear yourself with more soap and let it sit for a few minutes, or use Lever 2000 or Lava in the shower. (Also degreasing soaps.) Don't put the same clothes back on for any reason -- I've also made that mistake. Wash 'em. If you find you've actually gotten some PI, if it's still burning you still have the oil on you. I've gone so far as to just smear soap on me and continue what I was doing since I wasn't able to hop into a shower or something. If you do get some, it'll still itch some, but not insanely. First of all, you will get used to the noise. I'd visit Mom in FL whose house was a half mile away from the train tracks and the first day, I'd hear every train, but after that, hardly ever. Second, I think you need to get to know your neighbors...sounds like they are friendly types which is a good thing. I grew up in the country surrounded by lots and lots of land and few children because there were few houses. When I married and moved to an acre lot, it was terrible for awhile....all the traffic, the kids, the dogs, the mowers... Then I got to know my neighbors. And trust me, the chain saw isn't so loud when it's good neighbor Tim doing the sawing and you don't mind asking John if he could not mow on Saturday as you're planning on a memorial service for your Dad with lots of people coming.... And neighbors can be a great help, like when your snow blower breaks or when you need someone to feed the cat. I know our neighbor was glad for us when the house next to her's caught fire and the firemen wouldn't let her go home that night, so she spent the night with us. Every lifestyle has it's plusses and minuses. Change your perspective, seek the good, and then see where you're at. You may be surprised. BTW, we are now back home on 11 acres, but the area is so much more built up than when I was a kid. Even on our 11 acres though, I know when Bill is sawing or Jimmy is running his back hoe or when Norma is out mowing, or when Jessica's kids are playing with their dog. It's comforting.

Karen, I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I'm still recovering from our month on the road! We do what you do. Since I am allergic to garlic, this is my DH's substitute. He is Polish on his mother's side, grandparents came from Poland, so he grew up on it. He'll put it on or in a lot of what he eats. We've even had it in mashed potatoes. I don't like it, so I don't eat it. DS started putting it in deviled eggs. I also make DH's salad dressing. It's a honey mustard that I got somewhere on line, and I add horseraddish to that. Honey Mustard Salad Dressing 1/4 c cider vinegar 1/2 c oil 1 1/2 T. mustard 1 1/2 T. honey 1 t. oregano 1 T. Parmesan cheese I add about 1 heaping teasp. horseraddish to it. No horseraddish recipes from the street fair tho. Sorry. We went to see my Aunt on Sunday. There wasn't any of Grandpa's old plants to be found. Greenhaven- 8 weeks, so not too terrible. The bathroom above is also gutted, so as long as we get that finished in time, we will be ok, I think. We can survive just using our toaster oven in the dining room if we have to! Lazygardens and live wire- you aren't kidding. Luckily we knew when we bought an almost 100 year old home that we'd be uncovering some scary things. Most of the budget will definitely be going into things you can't see, but at least we will know our house is safe and done correctly!

Thank you everyone. Tomorrow will be interesting to say the least. Only our contractor/carpenter crew were here today clearing out their stuff, wiping things down for tomorrow's move in. They ran out of time to move the appliances in the house. And they know they have to be here before the movers because their open trailer is still in front of the house - blocking the mover truck...

But after all this, tomorrow all I need is a winter coat, comfy shoes and wave my arms around in different directions. I also have a clip board with our packing sheets so I can mark off the boxes on my copy as they come in.

DH is having major joint problems today with the weather. I'm quite happy to leave him in the trailer with the cat tomorrow. He can make the coffee.

So I'm heading to bed early tonight. Tomorrow night our own beds will be set up! Yippy!
