Main Man and I had planned to retire in Panama. However, changes in Main Man's health and my Mom's health will prevent a long stay in a forgein country. We had planned to volunteer at an Orphanage in Bouquete.

So I have checked in with Cross Cultural Solutions who offer a Internship for 3-12 weeks in Panama. I think we could do 4 weeks there. The cost is $3100 for 4 weeks and you live in a House with other volunteers from all over the world.

I have sent off for more information. I was just wondering if any one else has done this. I am truely very interested and I have requested March 15th as my departure time.

Yep, that's a problem....3 dogs. But, I doubt Main Man will go with me so He will be home with the kids. LOL!

I'm really excited about this...I'm going to meet an Alumni in Houston on December 5th.

I read in one of Tapla's posts (goodness, I've quoted him twice today!) that you could grow figs in marbles if you were willing to do the work. So, go for it, and let the rest of us know how it works out. It might be of interest to you that in the former USSR they grow quantities of fruit and veggies in large, heated greenhouses, using hydroponics. I also visited a large greenhouse west of Colorado Springs where they were growing tomatos using automatic watering, as well as an enterprise in PA which was growing watercress using hydroponics. So, why not figs?

Steve, you have me scracting my head and thinking more now going back to what i was trying to ssy but have hard time finding proper way. So DNA can change ? I go back now to wonder say a Mission fig if could be traced to be from its roots oversea's and then another growing here that was brought here and can be said for absolute what would the DNA markers say there realted close or maybe exact match? I go back and copy and paste what i said about this as if i try to type it again it might mean something different so .... i tend to lean this way-- DNA may say 2 types are very close and related but not the same, could tree have evolved elsewhere and somehow change to that climate making some markers not exactly alike as if grown i different area's same tree accimilated to the soil and therfore fruit color and leaf color are different-Example as its often heard here that 2 same types grown in different area's have a different leave or slightly different fruit color or even shape. I will be able to see if this is true along with others here as have sent 1 particular tree across country and up as far as Canada, so maybe in 3 or 4 years they can be compared to 1 another, a DNA test of that tree and mine i wonder what would show up in say 50 years from now if both trees survived just a thought that i wll never know answer too. END So i truly wonder if we are now seeing this in the fig world where tree's are very close match as UCDavis studies have found in some types, there was a discussion about how Dark Portuguese and i believe but could be wrong as its been a while since i read that post and Sals were very close i think it was Sals but not sure which. Perhaps this is slowloy happening or maybe just hogwash on my part of thinking? Martin

The best way to get the plants to produce more of those essential oils which give them their perfume is to give them lots of sun. REAL sun, with plenty of heat in it, like the sun where the plants originally came from, not the wishy-washy sun that you get in northern areas of the Northern Hemisphere, or the southern areas of the Southern Hemisphere. Artificial heat doesn't have the same effect as the sun. Also, if you make the plants work harder by providing them with poorer soil, you'll get a stronger perfume from them.

From my very own, yet admittedly non systematic experience I can conclude that the suggested temperatures will not work INDOORS, where the light conditions are deficient as compared to outdoors. My experience indicates that under artificial light, a Substrate temperature with the very emphasis ON "Substrate!" of 25 degree Celsius will have Hippeastrums thrive, flourish, prosper, boom - you name it :) The air temperatures can if not even should be lower, that is. The best results which I ever obtained was when I TRAPPED the heat of/from the central-heating Body under my totally 4 square meters of area on the windowsill and two adjacent tables on rolls in my living room, THEN. The only Hippeastrum I experienced which does not benefit from high Substrate temperature, is H.aulicum - BUT as regards bloomable bulbs. Other than that I thank you, Pterodroma, for your valuable suggestion.

Forget a condo in "Boca," THAT is what I have in mind for retirement! I hope I am able to do something like that someday. I wish you a fun, safe, unforgettable experience!

Can't wait to hear all about it next spring.

Just wondering, because the country you're going to is such a poor country, what kind of accomodations do you get for your $3100? Does this include all meals, etc.? I guess it seems like a lot to me, because I live in less than $1300 a month.

Junkyardgirl poses some good questions. It's a lot of money for 4 weeks. Does it include all food, lodging and transportation? Also find out about what happens if you become ill.

What will you be doing as an internship? Would this lead to some other volunteering? Have you spoken with others who have participated in this program?

As a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I wholeheartedly support cross-cultural experiences, but you want to be sure you are getting good value for your money.

I lived in Panama for 12 years and would love to go back someday. Boquete is on the pacific side, I believe. I lived on the atlantic side, on a hilltop overlooking the Gatun Locks. Panama has everything... except snow. :)

Sounds like a wonderful program, although the price seems high to me as well.

The accommodations are a Home Base, meals are cooked, there is a maid service, and also drivers and transportation all included in the price. (not airfare). You also have free time to tour.

I'm hoping they will put me in a classroom with children, but I will find out in my meeting.

If they turn me down I will look at other options.

If you have a set income of $1200 or more you can live in Panama or Costa Rico. Of course, there is the cost of moving there. You can find a decent rental for $400 per month and still afford little extras.

About getting sick there. San Jose has a very good hospital and is nearby. I also have a friend based in San Jose.

Gayle, I sure envy you. That will be quite an adventure. I'd love to do this and go to Thailand and help with the babies and children. I've been to Thailand 3 times but can't get enough of it. :)

Thank you for your plan and commitment, happy go lucky Gayle.

We need to have more international connections between people.

When we visit other places, though people follow different patterns of life than we are used to, if we sit and watch and consider for a while, a number of them do make a lot of sense.

And usually we learn as much from our hosts (often more) as they learn from us.

I hope that your plans move forward well.
