I've tried Newspaper and I had one big mess. I now hose them down then squeegy and windex with paper towels. Impossible to keep clean with country road dust.

I use newspaper if it's handy. Usually I just use an old soft diaper.

I've always used newspaper on glass and mirrors.

I use straight alcohol in a spray bottle, and then pieces of old 100% cotton sheets. I have a pile of the rags...my window rags.

If I occasionally go to someone's house to help with windows, I take my spray and own rags. They also get used on the house and car windows, TV screens and mirrors...nothing else.

I love to wash windows...on the outside anyway. They are casement windows and I can soon zip around the house in no time, doing them all. I do them every couple of months, and the pic window a lot more often.

Last night (for the first time) my pup decided to jump up and slide her feet across the pic window just to let me know she wanted in. I sure wish she would learn to talk (bark) to let me know such things.

Gayle, did you use newspapers that had colored ink on them? That might be why you would have a mess.

I buy blank newspaper at U Haul - it's about $8 or $9 dollars for a 10 pound box. I use if for washing windows and for wrapping dishes for storage etc.

A friend of mine who does house cleaning for a job, likes newspaper and white vinegar. She does not use any with color printing.

I only use black printed newspaper and straight rubbing alcohol. Cheapest and easiest way I've found to get the cleanest windows.

I just use an old towel. But I wonder...do you think chamois cloths would work well? I know they are used for drying cars.

I use Sprayway Window Cleaner on a damp sponge for doing windows.

Flamingo was the one who recommended Sprayway, and I have to say it's the very best window cleaner I've ever used.

I see a lot of us use newspaper when we wash our windows.
I was so surprised the first time I tried it. I thought it was a crazy idea, but it really does work. I use a rag or paper towel when I do the inside, but for the outside, it has to be newspaper. I just wish I had tilt in windows.

I hate cleaning glass with newspapers. The wet paper gets black ink all over my hands. I use white tissue paper instead, and a spray of one part ammonia (plain, not sudsy) and two parts water.

I "grew up" using vinegar and newspaper. Now it seems like nothing works very well. I've tried Windex, Windshield washer fluid, using newspaper, paper towels, newspaper, miracle cloths, etc. I think there is something in the atmosphere. . .Global Warming? Greenhouse Effect?

I looked for Sprayway at Walmart but they didn't have it.

The thing of it is I have always loved cleaning windows, but not any more.

I have used cider vinegar in HOT water and the black & white newspaper on my home & car windows for years! The acid cuts all the grime and besides..I'm not sure what Windex & paper towel companies are adding to their products but it leaves a film on the windows-no matter how hard you rub! FYI..when using newspaper? Wear rubber gloves-the ink transfers to your pretty hands & manicure! LOL

Well when I do wash my windows (which is normally maybe once a year, I really am a slacker in that department) I use windex and any ole cloth I can get my hands on. I have heard about using newspapers though, I may try that next time.
The main reason I do not wash my windows very often is because I have to unscrew the storm windows in order to get them all, it is a all day job:(

I make up a mixture of water and some methylated spirits in a spray bottle. After spraying the window, I wipe with black printed newspaper and it works well for me. The print does make my hands black, so I now wear disposable gloves.

I have used the newspaper on the outside of the windows with hot water and a little Joy. It's OK. However, Joy in hot water, window brush, squegee and it looks great, less shoulder intense. My interior is all light enamel and the news print leaves marks. Best for me is hot water, joy, either squegee it off or use a microfiber cloth. Windows sparkle.

In this area, if one goes to the newspaper office, they used to give you a roll with a small amount left there that had been taken off of the press.

It used to be free - maybe they charge, now.

I washed the inside of mine a while ago, using just a rag with warm water that contained a bit of dish soap.

Rinsed with another rag using just plain water.

Dried with a paper towel.

Spotless.

I have shoulder issues, so too much wiping of a window would be giving me a migraine the next day, seriously! I went to a business that sells professional cleaning supplies (love the one for showers, smells so good and doesn't eat the epidermal layer off your hand if you get some on you!). I bought a squeegee with the rubber end being squared instead of tapered like what you usually find in the big box stores - salesman said this removes the water from the glass more efficiently without the streaks. I also bought a car wash style brush - looks like a broomhead - and used that to wash down my window since some brat threw gum on my window (not one of my kids, someone just walking down the street) and I needed a bit of abrasive to work that off. Then he tried to sell me some window cleaner, stating the ammonia contained in windex is so bad for us to breath in (and I love my floral scented windex for in the house!), I asked him what was in it (it was pricey) and he said a little bit of detergent and some vinegar to act as a wetting agent, since a big part of getting the window clean was that there needed to be a sheet of water on it before squeegeeing, and the vinegar slowed down the drying. I chose not to buy, and used a small squirt of sunlight dish soap and some vinegar in my water, and was very pleased how my windows turned out. Two days later it rained just a little, enough to put raindrops on the glass, then the wind blew dirt all over, and I then had spotted windows again! Oh well, nice while it lasted!

Thanks joyful - We used to have a plant not too far from us but it closed. It was a great place to get the blank newsprint. At least the 10 box from U Haul lasts a long time - and I have lots of windows.

I have used coffee filters and vingear for years. I buy the largest filters I can find. No lint from the filters.
