Drowning in Newspapers?

I am a newspaper addict and have always placed the read ones in the Recycling tub. Have recently started saving all the daily papers in a trash bag in the trunk of my car. When the bag is full I take them to the local animal shelter. They use them in the "cat room" and for puppies, etc.

The local daily newspaper? I save in a smaller bag for my brother, who is also a newspaper reader. I take them to him when I go to see him, about once a week. He reads them and then they go down for use as "dog training" papers.

My not be a bit better solution than just recycling, but I feel like I may be doing a little more "immediate good" by sharing with others.

Just a thought...

My husband got an iPad and immediately signed up to read the newspapers online. (He reads the NYTimes and the Wall Street Journal.)

I was in trouble when I needed to:
-pack all the breakables so I could move the china cabinet for painting;
-create a sewing pattern for a costume.

Thank goodness we live in an apartment building--I could go pull some out of the recycling bin in the basement!

If I had an easy way to drop off newspapers for puppy cages, I would.

Great way to distribute and recycle newspapers..... ;-) I'm sure those agencies really appreciate them.

We don't subscribe to any home-delivered or on-line newspapers (local "rag" isn't worth reading - old news and old opinions) and I can read the obituaries and local news free on-line from other sources.

I DO, however, keep several newspaper end rolls in the house (UNprinted newsprint paper), which I purchase dirt cheap, and occasionally get free, from our local newspaper office. This unprinted paper has many uses from gift wrap to packing material, and occasionally art paper for small children who visit us - and many other uses.

The free 1/2-size weekly with advertising inserts (also distributed by the local paper) I use to make handmade paper - along with other scrap paper and junk mail that isn't recycled. I make all our greeting cards, gift tags, gift boxes, gift bags, place cards, invitations, seasonal decorations, and some objet d'art (bowls, vases, masks...). A fun, useful, and rewarding hobby with something that more often than not goes into the landfill, because people are even too preoccupied to recycle.

Despite the original posters overly extensive post, with certain questionable content, the central point is still quite vaild. We as a nation spend more money on grass than on any other crop. That by itself should be reason enough. Read up on the history of lawns and you'll find that they were orginally created as a means of demonstrating wealth (aka, I have this big area and I can afford to do nothing with it except grow grass I can't eat) Regarding the comments of junegem13 and zachslc, you might want to read up on the legal history of this movement. As it turns out, most weed laws (ones based on hight, not on noxious weeds) are unconstitutional. Nonetheless, if you are in a city or subdivision and decide to do a wildflower meadow where there is not an reasonable ordinance, then you should notify your neighbors and the city about why you are doing and the legal preceedants. The EPA has all this information. Regarding property values, that was the original complaint neighbors made against one landowner when she converted her lawn into meadow. When they were unable to demonstrate an actual decrease in property values, the city ordinance was ruled unconstitutional. Afterwards, the neighbors decided if they couldn't beat her that they'd join her and replace their own yards with meadows. Property values in that one neighborhood are now some of the highest in the city (Specific names and places, are available if you want them). Time and time again, lawn alternatives done correctly have shown to raise values, not lower them. In Charlottesville, VA local government is working on an ammendment to exclude native meadows from our weed ordinance. Other cities are doing the same very quicky, especially since the weed ordinance as written by many localites constitutes a legal liability to local governments.

There could be so many variables to why you are having 'troubles'. That's the problem with gardening, you aren't just born knowing... it's a process of making mistakes. Slow growing tomato plants could be many problems... I wouldn't give them too much N because you'd get larger plants and teenie tomatoes... I know this because I have done it! It could be over watering.... when tomatoes are over watered, they don't grow well. Could be you have a heat loving variety and you don't have the heat. But I'd suspect over watering. Tomatoes like a little drying out or drainage in between deep waterings. I have gardened since I was very small, and I still make annoying mistakes. There are so many variables and it makes me glad that I am not a farmer in the 1800's dependant on what i grow!

I have one daughter and 3 stepsons - all ages 8 to 10. We usually have 1 to 10 neighbor kids over a few days every week as well. I have a two story house plus a finished basement. The kids get the basement as their play area. The main level is the adults refuge. Rule - No toys are allowed on the main level at the end of each night. Any toys left on the main level will be put into a take-away box. The kid has to work them off if he wants it back. If they don't want to work for the toy, then it goes to Goodwill or in the trash after two weeks. Work is things like taking a wet rag and cleaning the hardwood floor or walls, raking the yard (nothing easy, but something they can do). When the floor is piled full of toys, it is impossible to vacuum. Once each week they have to pick everything off the floor (downstairs and their bedroom) so I can vacumm. I found picking up the toys and clothes was much more work than vacuuming so I tended to let the vacuuming go before. Now, I'll tell them the day before and remind them again before I get ready to vacuum. It is their responsibility to pick everything off the floor. If it is left on the floor, it is immediately put in the Goodwill pile or put in the trash. I have found that this helps keep the amount of toys in check so they can keep them up and really sends a quick message that they have to take responsibility for taking care of their things. It has also taught them the value of work (hands seem to stay off walls better when they know they will be cleaning them later. It is harder to teach them how to complete their task well than it would be to do it myself, but I know it will be much better in the long run. If they have a few things in the take-away box and the work has been good with minimal complaints, I might reward them with more than what they worked off and compliment them on a job well done. I do believe in providing positive rewards too! and bragging on them when they go above and beyond. One other thing. I keep a large plastic container in each room so they have a place to put toys off the floor. They are allowed to keep the amount of toys that will fit in the container in their room. All other toys have to be kept in the basement where I have more storage options and room. While my method may seem harsh, it works... and my wife and I have don't yell at them to get them to do something. We tell them what needs done, give them time to do it and then take action as necessary. If you say you will throw it away if they don't clean it up, you should mean it. I sent a stereo to Goodwill last weekend. We also have one additional way to get things done in a timely manner. Almost all kids, when given the choice would like to stay up later than they should. Each child has a bedtime, but if they act out, break a rule, or won't do somthing, they are given a strike and each strike requires them to go to bed 15 minutes early. It is not uncommon for a child to lose a hour of more if they keep acting out. If sent to bed, it's either lights out or they may read a book. This has been a great technique to stop temper tandrums (maybe not the first one or two, but eventually they get the message). We have one boy that is a worker and three that are on the lazy side, but I've found they are ALL capable of doing a good job. I do need to spend more time with them on organizing things in their room as mentioned in previous posts. When left on their own, they will just pile it on top of things in the room (but its off the floor). I watch all those HGTV shows where they neatly organize things into bins and cabinets, but you have to get the kids to use the storage areas and keep the amount of toys in check so everything will fit easily(note-kids will need twice the amount of storage an adult does because they don't pack stuff nice and neat). They tend to do things the quick and easy way (some things never change).

Reduce, reuse, recycle - any time an item can be used more than once, that's a bonus!

I still get a paper delivered, but I give it to my neighbors after we've read it. I find that I read a lot of things in the paper that aren't in the on-line version.

Newspaper endrolls are the best for washing windows.

Oh, and newspapers... I tear them up and put them in the yard as mulch. Does not look pretty, but does a good job. ;) I also put it in the compost pile.

We use ours under the mulch - keeps the weeds from poking through. Two newspaper sheets folded several times so that it is about six inches wide goes on the freshly weeded border, and then the mulch goes over that. Works better than landscape fabric.

I only occasionally get a newspaper, and then only a weekly one, such as L.A. Weekly or The Argonaut, which is for my specific neighborhood: Westchester - Playa Del Rey - Venice - Marina Del Rey. I save them to use in my charcoal chimney starter, but I do not pick them up every week like I used to. I am not a news addict, although my sister and BIL think I should be. Fortunately they live 1500 miles away in another state.

I never thought of using newspaper for a clothing pattern, and I have 36" wide tracing paper that I bought for that. For a more permanent pattern, I use white drafting paper, but it's a bit more expensive. I do most of my drafting on AutoCAD, and so I do not use drafting paper like I used to. All clothing patterns are drawn freehand, however. My brother still has a large drafting table, but he paints, and so that is different. I stored my drafting table in the garage and only get it out for parties when we need an extra table in the yard.

Right now I am drowning in furniture designs that I have printed out, and I need to recycle a lot of those. I was sick a couple of weeks ago and did not feel up to sorting them, and they sort of piled up. Most of my paper clutter is from design work.

I don't use newspaper for sewing patterns when I'm making real clothes. Just for when I'm making up Halloween costumes.

Living in the assist living complex now, I still like to have my own issue of the paper BUT, as soon as I finish, I give them to another couple to read, then they pass it on. That way they can read in their own room, and not have to sit in the common room to share.

Its been a while since I've read from a paper. I used to though then I got tired organizing and recycling so I stopped. I then found out that I can use my tablet so I subscribed and the rest is history.

Yes, Caroline, I did. Went to his service last New Year's Eve. It was a beautiful, heartfelt one.
