Wanted: New snowblower and husband

So my husband had to take the truck with 4 wheel drive to get out of the driveway....I am just upset. I told my husband the handle on the snowblower transmission fell off last week. I got a pin thing at the hardware store to get it back on. I figured it would be not too hard to fix. All week I've been asking for help to repair it so I don't have to shovel. I am so sick of him not helping around here. I tried to fix it but can't get it, he finally comes out of the house 10 minutes before he has to leave and is mad at me that I didn't tell him I couldn't get it fixed. He knows I am not good at mechanics. I can't shovel the driveway there is just too much snow..It will take two hours just to shovel the snow at the end of the driveway...I am sick of it, snow, home ownership and him. He keeps asking me what I want for Christmas...I think a new version of him would be good....REally not in a Christmas mood right now.

My husband only works on snow when it is yea deep! Then he gets out the tractor and scoop. We don't have a snowblower. We do have a long drive. It hasn't been deep enough yet for him to get the tractor out. Hope your day improves.

The simple design of the Model T Ford, and later on, the Model A, lent itself easily to the farmer building a simple tractor. This was done because old Ford T's were readily available for next to nothing, since a new one only cost $300 or so. And, the simple but rugged layout of the frame and running gear helped a burgeoning farm mechanic a lot! I owned several of those old homade tractors, and they did what i wanted them to do. I had one, with the A engine and part of the frame, the transmission, and a heavy AA truck rear end/differential assembly. It did a great job of pushing snow, and pulling a trailer around my property! There is a film of a snow plow on a Fordson tractor chassis, with the wheels and axles removed, and they were replaced with steel tubes with spiral tracks fastened to them, and driven off a rear-mounted gear box! I have also seen films of a Ford Touring car with a similar item on it, for deep snow travel!

Well I am glad to say that my son got to come home from the hospital on Jan.18th. And he did not have a blood clot in his heart thank God. He has to take a baby asprin everyday and Plavix and his doctor says he will make a good recovery if he stops smoking and goes on a diet which he needed to do any way. I got the autopsy report this week for my husband and it said he had scarring on his heart from another heart attack. Something that I didn't know. How can you have a heart attack and not know it or not tell your wife? I went to the graveyard today and told him I was a little angry with him for keeping this from me, maybe we could have done something to make it better. He never wanted to go to the doctor but if he had he might still be here to play with his grandkids and for me. I still love him and I always will but I am really hurt that he didn't do anything or that I didn't do anything. I finally received his death certificates today and there is some incorrect information on it so they have to do it all over again. I can't get any of the insurance business complete until I get the death certificates. I guess I'll survive until they are right. My husband's birthday is Monday January 28th he would have been 55. I am going to have his favorite birthday dinner Chicken and dumplings. I have invited his family members sisters, brother, and there kids for his birthday. I wanted to have them over because we all need to get together. This has been hard for them as well as me and our kids and grandkids. My daughter hasn't been dealing with this very well she has been angry more than anything. She is so much like her father always happy and cutting up so this isn't like her. She finally went to the doctor and got it all out and is feeling better now. Her doctor suggested she try kick boxing to get out her anger issues. I hope she does. I would like to thank anyone who read my post and prayed for my son. I think it really helped. Thanks for listening

Club M...I have this to offer, but first I want to respond to plastic gardens question. Not necessarily plastic garden. Sometimes people hit "mid life crisis" where they start to feel stifled by their life, including their careers, when they feel that "is this all there is" feeling plaguing them. They feel that there is nothing to get excited about, and are tired of their life, their job, etc. They start looking around them and feeling dissatisfied with everyone and everything around them. Anyway, look at what you can do, before you end up with another woman in the midst of your marriage, offering excitement, and fresh new experiences. And they can make some drastic decisions (and mistakes) to change things, only finding that the new relationship can bring problems into his life that he never even dreamed of. New wife that shoves aside his children (adult children too) because she is threatened by them, or they do not fit neatly into her picture of her new family. Or his kids can reject the new wife, and lots of hard feelings and damaged relationships can occur. plastic garden, you are looking at it as though it is "her". Perhaps it is "him". A man whose children are grown and are now vibrant young men, with vibrant young wives, just beginning their life. And he may be feeling jealous, (competition of sorts with his now adult men sons). Or just restless, and stale and in need of changes in his life. I know nothing of clubm marriage, or her life, or of who she is, as a woman, and a wife. But I would advise her to shake things up a bit, and make life a bit more interesting. To take a good, hard look at her marriage, and think about what she can do differently to improve it. To actually "listen" and hear what is bothering him, and look at what she can do to bring some happy surprises back into her marriage. Start by getting into shape if you are not. A new "look", from hair, makeup, clothes, etc. Look around the house. What can you change that would make the atmosphere fresh, and happy in the way your home looks and feels. Especially changing out the bedroom colors and spread. After you start making some changes, a trip might help. But look for changes you can make. If you are a type A control freak, let him take control, and you step back and do it his way, with a smile and encouragement. If he is the Type A control freak (and tired of always having to be the responsible one) you take charge, and let him be taken care of, without having to worry about anything. We get into tiresome roles in long marriages, that become tiresome habits. You sometimes hear about a man married to a very competent, accomplished woman, falling for a very needy airhead, because he needs to be needed. Or a man married to a needy airhead, falling for the competent professional woman, because he is tired of having to do everything, and always being the responsible one. He needs someone to take care of him at times. Sometimes, people just get sick of "the same old"...and long for something different, that makes us "feel" different. We can grow tired of ourselves and everything around us. Talk to him about his job. Is there something he has always dreamed of doing (and you too) that would be something to "get excited about"? Even if he can't actually quit his job, can he add something that he loves to what he is doing? Can you? You mentioned that he said some awful and mean things to you the other night. Without being defensive, can you step back and look at it as a therapist might, and consider each thing he said, and search if there is "any" truth in what he said? Can you "push the hurt aside" and simply "hear" what he had to say? Sometimes people say some really painful things because they are hurting, or depressed, but sometimes they say hurtful things because they need to speak the "truth" and sometimes the truth can hurt. But if there was truth in his words, can you actually "hear the truth" and ask yourself if there are areas you need to address and change in? We grow through some of the painful experiences in our life. I imagine that he is restless, and bored, and dissatisfied with everything right now. I have known people with long marriages that found themselves where you are. They shook things up and bought his and her Harley's and joined a group that cycled together. They were the last people in the world I would have thought would do this. Another took up ballroom dancing. Others sold the house and have traveled the world together. Others have bought a historic house and completely renovated it complete with much researched period furnishings, etc. Others get into antique cars and going from place to place as a group and showing the cars. Others have joined a drama group, and act in local plays. Others bought a camper and move with a new group of friends that like to camp and socialize together, and meet at various campgrounds around the state. Another couple started taking gourmet cooking classes together and travel to some of them. Anyhow, without knowing either of you, I would start by shaking things up a bit, and adding fun to your marriage. And shake up old stale roles and habits, and make your home and marriage something fresh...something to look forward to.

Let me be the contrarian here. If you need to cut back somewhere, the fridge is an obvious place to start. It's easily replaceable at a later date, and, as others on GW have observed, the fridge is the appliance that gives you the least bang for your buck. I see no conflict in buying an expensive range and keeping an old fridge. Our kitchen renovation ran well into six figures (not including appliances) and we spent another $14K on a Wolf rangetop, M Series oven and CSO, but decided to keep our 3 y.o. KitchenAid dishwasher, and 25 y.o. Hotpoint fridge. Both my wife and I think the kitchen looks quite nice this way. I'd be happy to post a picture if someone could tell me how to do it (I click photo and click on the picture, but nothing seems to happen). In any event, our new kitchen layout precluded re-using our old Thermador range (even though it was in perfect shape), so cooking appliances were the obvious area to devote to our rapidly-dwindling resources. My wife didn't think it was worth the extra $1,000 to get a CSO instead of a double oven, but I ultimately convinced her it was worth a shot. She still prefers the M Series, so the CSO is "my" oven and the M Series is "hers". The dishwasher decision came next. I would love to get a Miele Pro Series DW at some point, as it can do a load in 25 minutes, but at $5K it's pretty pricey. Our KitchenAid runs fine, so we decided to re-use it, but have a 220V receptacle installed under the sink. So, a future upgrade to a Miele will be pretty simple. Finally decisions had to be made about a refrigerator. Our fridge space goes into a cubby in the mud room, so we're lucky in that we can accommodate either a counter depth or a full-depth fridge. Neither my wife nor I could see the point in spending $8K on a SZ or other high-end fridge, when $2K will provide you with a fridge that works almost as well and has more storage space, so we ruled out a counter-depth pretty quickly. There were 2 main reasons why we decided to keep our old fridge, at least for the time being. The first is my concern about noise and reliability. Our 25 y.o. Hotpoint is very quiet and has had exactly one service call in 25 years (by contrast our 3 new Wolf appliances have had a total of 7 service calls in just 4 months). My perception is that newer appliances just aren't built as well as they used to be. We have to keep our GE washer & dryer under maintenance contracts, as they seem to crap out at least once a year, whereas our old Whirlpool ran over 20 years without a problem. Also after reading reviews of even highly-rated refrigerators, I get the impression that new fridges are much noisier than the old ones. Someone told me that this is because the new energy-efficient compressors make a lot of noise. On second thought, maybe I shouldn't be too concerned about this, as the fan on our Wolf M Series sounds like a jet engine once the oven gets hot. Most of our meals are spent with that thing howling in the background. Maybe the biggest reason for keeping the old fridge though, was due to a simple matter of aesthetics. My wife doesn't like having too much stainless steel in the kitchen, and all of the better full depth fridges only seem top come in that. Our old fridge is a nice cream color with black accents on the handles that perfectly matches our Kohler Biscuit sinks. The closest you can get to this color nowadays seems to be a "bisque" color, that is monotone and way too yellow for my taste. So we decided to keep our old fridge in the hope that something more to our liking comes out before this one decides to kick the bucket. We took a 3 week vacation during construction and left the fridge powered off and closed, which was a big mistake. We almost decided to chuck the fridge when we came back and discovered it was full of mold. It took almost a full day of scrubbing with Clorox, but it ended up looking almost new again. The same thing happened again, when the carpenters took the fridge out for the floor refinishing. They took the doors off this time and covered the fridge in plastic. We returned to find the worst of both worlds - the fridge was full of both sawdust and mold. In the end, both my wife and I are happy with our decision to keep the old fridge. We know its days are numbered, but will be sad to see it go.

We got a foot of snow Saturday-Sunday. DH took a look outside and refused to go out. I pushed open the back door, dug out the stairs and back patio so the dog could do her business. Then I saw Mr. Nice Guy Next-door Neighbor with his snowblower. He blew a path from my front door to the street. I dared venture out, walked to my local store, falling down twice, and got the Sunday newspapers. Once home, Mr. Nice Guy then blew my entire driveway clear, and pushed the snow off the top of the car. Meanwhile, DH cowardly spent the morning in bed, complaining about this or that. To thank Mr. Nice Guy, I baked a plate of chocolate chip cookies and sprinkled red and green sugar on them. Foe Christmas I'd like DH to take a few lessons from Mr. Nice Guy. DH owns a snow plow,it's in the garage.

Just saw an ad for a new 'self help' book -- something like: "You Can Have a New Husband in Five Days". I think it's by the author of a similar book about *re-forming* your children.

My DH isn't up for swap. You wouldn't find him useful with the snow anyway. Last time I saw him with a snowblower he was heaving it into the street after it failed to start. That was, oh, thirty years ago.

You and others have pointed out how worthless some husbands are at clearing snow. Is yours any better in doing warmer weather chores and gardening? If so I'll take him, if not send him somewhere else.

My guy is thankfully usefull in the outdoors department, otherwise we would have to move because I'm not strong enough to do all that snow removing and taking care of 5 acres in the summer. My reply would be, either you clear it or I'm paying someone else to, like it or not!! Actually, I don't think I would have the patience with someone who didn't help out. My first marriage was like that and I vowed never to be the mule/slave/maid ever, ever, ever, ever again!!! Why don't you have one of those guys that you pay to clear your sidewalk and driveway? Would that solve the problem?

No sox he doesn't do any yard work either, or so I guess you don't want him either. To pay someone to clear driveway won't do, have to pinch pennies to pay bills..so I guess I am the free labor. I usually don't mind doing it so much. But when the snow is heavy and deep and snowblower not working it's just too much. Yeah running out of patience. We are going over to my sisters, other sister coming too. He has been gripping about it for days, he usually drives in a separate car so he can leave early, but we have to take the truck because of snow..this is going to be fun, hope we don't have a fight. I sometimes tell him to just stay home I will tell everyone he is not feeling well.

Sorry I am such a humbug....

Don't let him get by with that getting mad at YOU for not telling him it wasn't fixed crap. Everyone knew that snow storm was coming. Did he bother to ask you if you were able to fix it? It's bad enough he expected you to run it much less fix it.

Go party with your sisters and have a Merry Christmas without Mr. Grinch! If you can't get the drive cleaned off then stay home and let him try to get back IN the drive.

Hey izzie, you take his truck and go alone to your family Christmas, leave DH (and I don't mean "dear") home with your car keys...if he wants to go anywhere it will give him incentive to fix the snowblower

I'd only shovel out my side of the drive way, and pile it up on his side. And if I didn't need to go anywhere, I wouldn't be doing any of it.

Boy, I can understand your frustration. My ex-husband could've been your husband's long-lost brother. They do have a way to turn everything around and make it YOUR fault.

I spent many years doing what HE wanted, visiting HIS family and friends, and pretty much putting my wishes aside. May I suggest ... that you start putting yourself first, Izzie. Visit your sisters without him, and really ... stay as long as you like! Don't lie about him not feeling well ... just tell them truthfully, you chose to come alone so you could all have a fun visit! It takes a couple times, but it's much more peaceful to go by yourself and leave him at home to grump to himself.

I think when we're in a relationship we typically evolve to where certain chores are 'his' and certain chores are 'hers.' When we're lucky, the division occurs in a way that ... for the most part ... He's doing what he enjoys, and She's doing what she enjoys. Sometimes it ends up a bit unbalanced, with someone doing a chore they don't care for, but they have time/talent for doing.

It sounds to me like you're feeling this division of chores is considerably off-balance. If that's so, then the problem needs to be addressed ... when neither one of you are angry or stressed. I wish you all the best in working out the problem. My ex felt his day ended when he walked in from work. His father did it that way, why couldn't he? It didn't matter to him that his mother didn't work outside the home so she catered to his dad ... I have always worked outside the home and just didn't feel that was something I wanted to do!

Hey, you can only be a victim if you allow yourself to be one. You teach people how to treat you. Maybe you should change the channel and star in a new life movie?

The only thing that is worse than leaving a broken home is living in one. You need to make a better list of what you want out of life.

... (you being too tuckered out from all of that work on the driveway).

If he wants supper - he gets it himself.

Usually the stuff that we do in life ... has consequences.

By the way ... I can't quite see how this cleaning one half of the driveway works - how does one get one half of the car out, in which to run errands ... have fun, etc. ... while the other half is stuck in an uncleaned driveway?

I wouldn't trade mine no matter what....Would you believe, right now he's in the kitchen mixing up waffles...We have breakfast/brunch for all the kids and families and he's the cook....He also takes care of all the snow and all the grass as well as some of the household duties.....He's a keeper

My husband was the dream guy - did all the 'manly' stuff. Sadly, he's no longer with us - he died two and a half years ago - be thankful all of you blessed women have your husband - I'd give anything to still have my manly man!

i agree with stoney lol. thank goodness im single, (well helping with my parents) but im not doing a darned thing different than if i was till living THERE for that no good @#$%^%^&& laying in bed and a 17 year old step kid who didnt know what a shovel was or dish liquid, or a vacum cleaner! yep a merry christmas to me lol i dont mind at all helping my parents they are in their 70s actually i enjoy it because i DONT HAVE to, not because someones lazy and inconsiderate. kay if you dont mind my saying so you were lucky..we dont always get that lucky.

I've lived with that crap for so many years.....and it still p*sses me off......GGGRRRR! Makes ya wonder..with all the things we "HAVE" to get used to, why cant we get used to that...AND JUST IGNORE THE WORK THAT NEEDS DONE...like most men can/will do! I have so many people offer to help me out with so many things...we live in a small town.everyone knows everyone.and they know if I dont do it, it dont git dun! If there was a way out..I'd be on it!
How do men justify "letting" us do it? I always said my husband was the only child I have that never "grew up and moved out"!
Izzie....when you are invited somewhere..dont even tell him....tell him you are going to the store or whatever....at least that way you might be able to enjoy yourself for awhile without him around! I do that to my hubby all the time. I had thought about playing lottery and winning big, so I can get out.....but who has money to play lottery.and it is such a scam....
Enjoy what is left of your christmas..it cant always be about him!
