your pets and wrap and put them under the tree?

I used to buy squeeky toys for all the dogs but haven't for the past couple years...seems all the money goes for people gifts.

It was funny to watch our Miss the Doxie scratch and chew to get hers open! Then of course she wasn't happy with just one either, she'd steal all 4 of them! LOL

Yes, Luther gets gifts every year. This year Santa brought him Dingo bites, Doggie Christmas cookies and some other snack...can't remember what it was. Alex wants me to take him to Wal-Mart to get him something too this year. He won't play with toys so it's usually food that he gets.

I always used to get the cats a few new toys each year. But the one we have left really doesn't do the 'toy' thing. She's just as happy chasing a wadded up ball of wrapping paper--for about 30 seconds, then she's done for the year. So it seemed sort of silly to keep buying her toys she wouldn't ever use. Now, DH WILL buy her a new supply of her favorite treat--canned whipped cream. She gets a little squirt of it each evening as he's getting ready to go to bed--it's her favorite thing in the whole world.

My mother is one of those people who loves to give gifts, but unfortunately, has no sense of what the other person likes. She orders junk out cheap catalogs, re-gifts (for instance, a make-up case where an eyeshadow or two was used), or wraps up prizes she won at bridge tournaments (keychains or BBQ tools marked "Delta Dealin' Regionals"). She is well-to-do, (maybe because she doesn't spend much on presents? ha) so she's not giving inexpensive items out of necessity. She just doesn't get it. Christmas is tricky--but my family chuckles. (My husband got a Humane Society calendar this year, the one they send for free if you've donated. He also received a plastic Thomas Kincaid corkboard/keyholder thing in a busted box that he immediately took to a "Dirty Santa" party.) But then I am left with boxes saying "As Seen on TV!," useless kitchen gadgets, hideous plastic decorative items and heavy sense of guilt for wanting to get rid of it all. "Gosh, it may not be much, but she chose it with love and wrapped it with me in mind. I can't just put it in a yard sale." I was wringing my hands over my quandary, as my closets slowly filled with unwanted items ("but my MOTHER gave me this!"), when a wise friend had a talk with me. She reminded me that when a gift is given to me, it is now mine to do whatever I like with it. It is not Mom's, with strings attached or say-so about what should be done with it. It is MINE. I own it and I have the authority to decide where it goes. And it is perfectly okay if I think it should be donated to Goodwill and be enjoyed by someone else who might love it and think they found a treasure, instead of sitting unopened and disliked in my closet. So I no longer feel bad about "recycling" her unwanted presents. The only time I've ever spoken to her about the issue was when I had to gently ask her not to give me clothes anymore, since her taste was so different than mine. Now I thank her And sometimes she does hit the mark and I am delighted by her gift. You cannot control someone else's desire to spend money on your presents. They enjoy shopping for you and they like thinking they found the ideal gift, even if it's expensive. Of course, if you don't like it, it makes you feel bad that they invested in it, but every so often you might get something you want and then the cost doesn't bother you, right? I think you're being very gracious about trying to decorate with this item to spare your mother's feelings. But it's not up to her what you do with it, because she transferred ownership when she gave it to you.

My youngest DB invited my parents and all of us over to his house for a Father's Day bbq. So we just went over there. I usually do get my DH, Dad and FIL a gift. My FIL knows his will be late every year anyway since we have to ship it and I'm not as organized as I wish I was. We are getting him some Clint Eastwood movies that he likes. Gave my dad some cologne. Got DH cologne too and took him out to eat at Texas Roadhouse Saturday night. Sounds like ya'll had a good day. I have got to get my painting area organized. I've got too many projects looking me in the face when I go in there and I think it's overwhelming me too much. I think if I only leave 2 out I'll be able to finish those and move on. Hope you get that shed finished. Sounds like a big job. We are taking out our old chain link fence in prep for the new fence. The people who put in the old posts concreted the poles in with 3 feet of concrete! we have had a terrible time getting them out and now there is a section connected to our neighbors drive that is concreted all the way across that we'll have to bust up. I've been trying to help DH, but I'm not too muscular so it's really falling on him to do most of it. Good news is only a few more weeks until the new fence goes in!! We are really getting excited. I've got to get DD ready to go on a church youth trip so been running around trying to get her things together. Got to go do a little shopping today to finish up. DS has to build some kind of box car for a Scout thing next week and we haven't started on that. You know how it is, just one thing after the other with these kids and their activities. I host a similar gift swap at a party I do every summer. Out of season right? But the point of the game is to have fun which we always do. I call it the Greed Game, mainly because that's what it was called the first time I ever played it years ago at a Christmas party, but also because that is the whole point of the game: greed! I've found over years of playing it that these things hold true: 1. People LOVE to unwrap a present 2. If you get a low number (one of the earlier pickers in the game) there is a good chance that the game will not be fun for you, in the event that you pick a gift no one else wants to steal. It's not fun to watch everyone else stealing and laughing and having a good time while you sit there with an undesirable gift. So here are the rules we play by, which seem to work very well. Everyone draws a number. Round ONE consists of everyone unwrapping a new gift. Round TWO is for stealing. #1 looks at his/her gift and decides to either keep or steal. If keeping, play moves to #2. If stealing, #1's gift goes on the table and #1 steals from someone else who we will call 1a. 1a can take the gift on the table or steal from another person (1b). 1b can take the gift on the table or steal from another person (1c). 1c must then take the gift from the table. Once the gift is taken from the table, whether it be by 1a, 1b or (forced) 1c, #1's turn is over and play moves to #2 who initiates another round of stealing if desired. Within one player's turn (#1, 1a, 1b and 1c for example) a gift can be stolen only once. However, once that person's turn is over and stealing play moves to the next player, all gifts are again available for stealing. This method allows everyone to open a new gift AND to have an opportunity to steal. The stealing goes on AFTER all the gifts have been opened so that people can decide what they want based on complete information. There is still no guarantee that everyone will go home with the gift they wanted, but that is never guaranteed. The fun of this game is in the stealing, thus the "greed". So when everyone opens a new gift and everyone can also steal, it's the fun of the game that becomes the star instead of what gift you end up with. The gift you end up with is more of a bonus for participating in the game. I will say that the gifts need to be imaginative. If everyone brings a gift card, there won't be much fun in either opening or stealing. And it doesn't matter if the gifts are worth $5 or $50. Again, because the point is the fun of the game and the gift is merely a bonus. I hope you have fun no matter what you decide to do!!

Not now. We've gotten away from the gift giving in standard ways anyway. Among those close to me we give gifts when we feel like giving a gift. Why wait for a birthday, holiday, retirement, death or otherwise to give something when you want to give it to them? Plus this way there isn't the obligation to give something you can't afford and they can't use. Most gifts are something the person wants and either the other person has it and doesn't want, need or use it anymore or can afford to give it. Limits the holiday shopping and the inflated prices plus it relieves stress. And cuts down on the clutter we all have too much of anyway. And when something is on sale, clearance or otherwise, it benefits that much more. Not foolproof but advantageous and works quite well. Now if I had grandchildren, all rules might go out the window...

I did when I had pets. Steph gave my cats both personalized stockings when we were partners in a Christmas swap. I still have the stockings, even though both cats have passed away. I get a little misty when I see them with the other Christmas stuff when I decorate every year but I don't plan on ever getting rid of them.

When we had a cat, I enjoyed wrapping a catnip mouse and finding that present toted here and there pre Christmas morning. By Christmas morning, the wrapping was a little ragged. I also would buy her official ping pong balls because she loved the noise they made on the hard floors and one little swat would send it clickity-clacking across the floor with gusto, and her in pursuit. Great exercise.

Harry has his own stocking, a red and white patchwork velveteen affair with red paw prints embroidered on the white squares. He gets so excited when I pull it out of the Christmas decorations box. He jumps and barks and wants Christmas "right now." He remembers the stocking and knows exactly what it means.

It always holds a new bag of Cabela's Liver Training treats (his favorite), and little bag of PetCo's dog cookies from the open bins (his favorite) and a new tin of Wilson's Tennis balls (his favorite) and a Milk Bone cookie (his favorite) straight from the box in the pantry. Sometimes he gets a raw hide chewy (his favorite) or a slice of cheese (his favorite.)

Sometime I put a scoop of his regular dog food in there, too, just so it looks full. I'm silly; I know. Harry's stocking is one of the best parts of Christmas at our house.

I usually sneak a squeaky toy in, too. Wes hates for Harry to have them. Apparently they can encourage hunting dogs to have a "hard mouth", but after all these years of good hunting, I don't think a squeaky toy that lasts less than five minutes is going to ruin his discipline. Harry has the toy shredded, the squeaker surgically removed, and ripped to shreds in less than five minutes. It's the highlight of his year! LOL

He has to wear his jingle-bell adorned reindeer antler cap while he roots through his stocking, too.

"Gets no respect"...but lots of love.

See all the white stockings on the top...those are all the family furkids! And yes, they usually all get something in their stockings!

Heck yea...Dakota LOVES opening presents, and it's hilarious to watch. She gets really excited!

My furbabies get stockings with treats and toys. I also send treats to my best friend's dog from my dogs at Christmas.

I buy my furbaby, Declan LOTS of gifts. I also buy for my children's pets, my sister's pets and all my friend's pets. They are more fun to buy for than humans!!!!
This year, I bought rawhide "postcards"....they were such a cute idea, that I could not pass them up!

Yes they get treats, mine don't chew on toys anymore. BUT they do love a good meaty bone.

If Feliz (who came to us on Christmas Day as a foundling hence the name Feliz but not Navidad)didn't get Christmas gifts, there would be a blue Christmas in Texas! My sister sends her treats, we get her a new stuffed mousie toy (the old one is pretty flat by December) and now she is getting Christmas cards from the vet! Dogs have owners;cats have staff. We are staff.

Of course Santa dog and Santa cat come to our house. This year they are older and no longer play with toys so they will get food treats instead. They have stockings too. Santa dog and Santa cat don't wrap their gifts though.

The dog has a stocking and he'll get some treats this year. He usually gets a toy, but he has so many that I've quit buying them. The younger cat will get a toy and both cats will get some treats.

Yes, we get gifts for our dog Molly and 2 cats Whisper and Dewey. The dog especially loves to chew off the paper with her teeth. Love it-they are definitely "members of the family."

Yes, Rufus is getting 2 new toys and plenty of treats. He has all the toys we have bought him over the past 6 years and hasn't torn up any of them yet. He thinks everyone of them belong in the living room until bedtime too! Our living room looks like we have at least 2 kids living here and actually we don't have any kids living at home!
