? for Juneroses (google nexus tablet, again -- sorry!)

I'm still waiting to see the 10-inch version in stores, I guess it'll be a little while. But in the meantime I've been playing with whatever other tablets I've seen in Office Depot, Staples...

One of the things I'd like to do with the tablet when I have it out of the house is crosswords, and you mentioned that you do crosswords on your 7-inch.

When I was using the 7-inch this week, and using the web on it to pull up the USA Today crossword and some others, it didn't display properly. I'm not sure why, but when I accessed another crossword it was OK -- tho there was very little display space. Enlarging the type helped me get the letters in but I'm wondering if you use a stylus for this?

Do you find it frustrating to do a crossword on your tablet? Tips? Maybe I'm just not approaching the tablet in the most user-friendly way!

I will throw this out not all apps are formatted properly to display correctly on tablets, and the size does often matter. Many apps were created for phones display and look odd on tablets. Some will tell you in the app store that it is not optimised for your device.

I have a majhong game that looks great on my phone but isn't really playable on my bigger tablets.

There's lots of free apps to try till you find the right one . Like solitare I tried many but the best app for it is solitare free pack.

I do crossword on mine with no problem. I think the app i am using is crossword lite.

By the way if you want the nexus 10",you might look at the tablet I am using right now. It is by Asus same as the nexus7, has the same tegra quad core processor, same screen, but it is 10", now the nexus 10 is made by Samsung instead of Asus. Asus has a high ratings tablet.
Look into Asus tf300 transformer tablet, it is hard to beat, virtually the same as the nexus7 but 10", and there's been some awesome sales on them. I got the dock with keyboard for mine but it is not necessary.

For crosswords, I use the Shortyz Crosswords app (free at Google Play) and lock the screen into Portrait (open the app, tap settings [3 small stacked squares/dots at the upper right of the screen], tap SETTINGS, and then tap ORIENTATION LOCK. Tap PORTRAIT.) You will need to do this only once. All future Shortyz crosswords will be oriented in Portrait mode.

As you noted, in Landscape mode there's not much space left to actually display the crossword when the keyboard is also displayed. I'd be unhappy if I had to work in this mode.

Despite the fact that I don't have long, slender "piano" fingers, I don't use a stylus. I find I can tap the keyboard letter I want with only the occasional miss.

With Shortyz, the daily crosswords available are: NY Times, Washington Post, Newsday, Joseph, Los Angels Times, Sheffer, Thinks.com, Universal, and USA Today.

Shortyz also offers 13 other sources for weekly crosswords.

You can choose which of these (or all) you wish to download, and the date to be downloaded. You also have the option to automatically download the puzzles you have selected when you go online (only the puzzles with that day's date will DL).

I especially like that below the clue, you see the spaces for the answer. If any of the spaces are filled in (because of an answer to the clue going in the opposite direction) that letter(s) is shown. I find this really helpful for the vertical answers as it makes it easier to visualize a word forming. It may be that most online crossword puzzles do this. Frequently I don't even look at the crossword display but rather this layout below the clue.

I definitely do not find it frustrating to do crosswords on the tablet. In fact, I prefer it. No holes in the paper from too many erasures and it's easy to hold the 7" in one hand and "answer" with the other. Plus I can put in "maybe" letters in hopes that I have an "aha" moment and the answer comes to me.

I haven't had any glitches regarding how the crosswords display.

If something happened to my tablet today (assuming it didn't spontaneously combust, etc.) I'd curse myself for being so clumsy, etc. and rush out and buy the exact same one again.

This isn't related to crosswords, but in my earlier post I mentioned I had just DL a GPS app. Earlier this week I had a chance to try it out and I'm amazed at how well it worked (Navfree: Free GPS Navigation) and definitely recommend it. After having DL the map of my state earlier and saving it, the tablet "found" us on the road and a voice (surprise!) even advised when we needed to "turn left in 100 yards", etc. I've since DL the maps of a few adjoining states for a forthcoming trip.

I have two (one iPad and one Android)...each is fine. I like them because they take up little space, can do most anything a laptop can do, and I use them to download a number of magazines and newspapers I subscribe to. And they can be used as an e-reader for books (like a Kindle, etc.). Once downloaded, these documents are on the device, and I don't need an Internet connection to read them. However, I would imagine that any hospital these days will have wi-fi available. The only disadvantage I see is that they are a little slower to type on because you are typing on the touch screen. However, if this is a big deal, then you can get a cheap, compact keyboard that pairs with the device wirelessly (I just bought one for $20). As far as apps, the choices are endless, and often free...I've yet to pay for one. Most tablets have an icon to tap to take you to the "store" where you type in the sort of thing you are looking for and then you choose and download it. Some of the apps I like are: a weather app; a flight app that gives the realtime schedule for any flight in the world; a wi-fi locater showing where free wi-fi is available anywhere in the world based on my location; a dictation app so I don't have to type; game apps (Mahjong and crossword puzzles); music app to play digital music files; calendar, shopping list, and reminder apps; video player so I can watch Netflix movies; and several recipe apps with 10's of thousands of recipes available (I just put the tablet in a little stand in the kitchen). That's about 10% of what I have installed. If you are going to get one, I suggest a 10" screen as it makes reading books and magazines, as well as surfing the web more enjoyable. You also have to decide whether you are going to get one that has only wi-fi, which means it can only access the Internet when you are in range of a wi-fi router, or whether you are going to get a more expensive one that can also access a data plan from a cell phone company. With the latter, you are not dependent on finding an available wi-fi connection to surf, but you are paying probably $100 more for the capability, and you will need to pay monthly for a data plan like you would with a smartphone. I don't have a data plan for my tablets. I mainly use a tablet at home so it connects to my router, and at other places, like major airports, university buildings, public buildings, Starbucks, McDonalds, etc., there is usually free wi-fi. If I really need an internet connection when I am out and can't find a free one, I just use my smartphone. Lastly, you can use most tablets as cameras, and more expensive ones have two cameras built-in so that you can also make phone calls via Skype. Another interesting day with an android tablet. Last night I bought Discover magazine from the Nook app store and it said it would take over an hour to prepare and download the current issue. No problem. At bedtime I left the tablet on thinking it needed to be on for the download to complete. This morning it seemed the download must have terminated because the app had closed, but the magazine wasn't in the library and I couldn't reach it online. I checked and had received an email receipt. I called tech and they told me to turn the tablet off and then back on. The magazine then was in my library, but everything there had ribbons saying "download," indicating I'd have to redownload everything. Tech confirmed this. O.K. So I did. Later, I took the tablet to the market, planning to use the recipe book I bought on Nook for shopping. When I tried to open the book a box popped up that said wi-fi unavailable. Later I called tech, who didn't seem to have a solution, then took the tablet to Barnes and Noble (oddly, their ATT system wouldn't allow a download from the Nook store to my tablet) and to Office Depot. Everyone said I should be able to read a book or magazine offline, without wi-fi, but noone could figure out what to do to enable it. This evening I figured I'd buy something from the Toshiba book store app. One of the techs had me set up an account during the bookmarks issue because she said she was most familiar with that app. Tonight I tried to log in and it wouldn't accept my user name and password. I confirmed they were correct as I had written them down. I had the site email my password and the correct password arrived in my email, so what's with this? Does some of this just amount to requiring a network tablet and data plan for this sort of thing to work? The password thing makes me feel like I'm being singled out or something. It's getting weird. Later I checked in to Yahoo on the tablet and when I logged out there was a tiny message box that said I'd made changes in my Yahoo account. I'm on a PC as I write this, checked Yahoo and didn't notice any changes. Anyone know what that's about? Now that I'm safely on a PC I'll be reading all the previous posts. Luckygardner--Threadwords was free. Try searching Amazon for free games (I know last Dec, I just found it searching through the free books). Alisande? Have you tried any of the free books? There are a gazillion classics--which I mean to read, but haven't gotten around to yet. But a lot of the free books by unfamiliar authors are actually VERY good. If you like mysteries with lots of twists and turns--try the Paul Pilkington book--it's almost always near the top of the free list, can't recall the title. A lot the other free books I've read (and it's been many dozen by now) are surprisingly well written--and there are every kind of book from mystery to romance to comedy to biography to other non-fiction, cookbooks, sample chapters--I literally have bought only about 5 e-books since getting mine. Yes, there have been a couple of clunkers, but a very very small percentage. I'd highly recommend giving a few of the free books a try. Read the reader reviews--I've found they're a pretty reliable source of info.

Don't feel bad, Amy, Tim uses voice to text a lot at work (cause he cannot text while driving) and it doesn't work out well AT ALL sometimes. Last week he sent a voice-to-text thing to one of his lieutenants while trying to make sure all the plans were in place for a new rookie cop's graduation from the police academy, and somehow some perfectly decent words got changed to vulgar words that completely obscured what he was trying to say. His lieutenant said when he read the message he laughed until he almost cried, and then he sent Tim a text that said "what is it you're trying to say?". lol lol lol Tim sent me a screen shot of their exchange and I laughed until it hurt....didn't make me cry though. At least I'm not the only person who gets messages from Tim that make no sense whatsoever, and so far, we can blame them all on voice-to-text.

The Nexus is great! I'm absolutely in LOVE with this thing! It is very user friendly so I didn't have to go searching the internet for tutorials. Here's the one I have on Amazon http://bit.ly/YtuY5v. If you're looking to get a tablet I'd recommend the Nexus over the other tablets, it really blows them away. :)
