First thing I would do would be call the doctor that prescribed the meds and have a talk with him/her. "I" would want an explanation. Then decide from there whether to change doctors or not. I had good luck with one kidney doc and terrible luck with another.

Do the two docs know what's up with each other?

Maybe they should make use of that century-old invention called a "telephone"?

Goldy, my cardiologist wants either the containers, or a current list of anything I am taking whether prescribed by him or not each time I go in. I keep a list (that includes vitamins, tylenol etc) and have started taking it along when I see my endocrinologist too so neither of them prescribe anything that would conflict in any way...

I haven't seen a family practice type doctor for some time but would do the same with that kind of appointment. Any time someone in any field is prescribing something for you, make sure they know what is already in your current prescriptions.

My elderly neighbor took a prescription to her pharmacist one time and he refused to fill it, said it would interact with someone already on monthly order for her. She called her doctor, and he was furious - something about the drug would only cause a problem if taken in combination long term, and it was something he had prescribed for 10 days only. Clearly angry at being overridden by the pharmacist. So they don't always have it right either...

I agree with Socks, that the 2 dr's need to confer with one another & possibly with your pharmacist too, then one of them needs to get back with you to explain the outcome.

As to getting another kidney doc... I wouldn't necessarily do that based on this one incident... you don't know for *certain* he is wrong. But, even if he is in the wrong... you have no fool proof way on your own of evaluating the expertise of the next kidney doc that you pick randomly, or one that is "recommended" say by a friend. As stated... any doc can make a mistake... they are all human.

My question would have been - why are you changing another doctor's prescription?
I would never accept one Dr's changing another Dr's prescription...and none of my specialists would, either.

I go to 4 specialists, and they are all in contact with each other and exchange information.

My sister is a pharmacist. She has noticed several problems with prescriptions like that. Once she found a doc had prescribed an adult dose of a pill for a child. She called the physician. It could have it killed the kid. Another time she noticed a particular doctor prescribing lots of pain killers. She reported him to police. Thank heaven for good Pharmacists.

So far our Dr's work great with each other and with the pharmacy. Even the Doctors 147 miles south at another clinic we go to. Guess we are lucky. They do communicate with each other. Also every one of our Dr's go over the meds and vitamins etc we take, even the amounts every time we go in. Most of it is on the computer, even when one of them prescribe an antibiotic. That is brought up and discussed only.
But none of them will ever change another's prescription unless they talk to them first, then the original Dr. will do the changing only. I do not know if one Dr can do that unless they issue a brand new prescription.

Monday I will call my heart Doctor and fined out what to do..I do know this doctors stick together and one will not tell or put the other on spot if they can help it.My little brother had a problem years ago and the doctor told my mother to "letitgo"because they would have a hard time proveing it.I don't want to prove anything I just want a doctor I can trust and I want to make it to 104-I'm 81 now.So far I'm doing pretty good .The trouble only started with the kidney doctor.This is the second precription he has changed.I didnot want to leave his office and call my heart doctor to check because I thought he did.You see I only see my heart doc every other month.And I trusted him to do the calling.

I could be misunderstanding you but it sounds like there are two issues.. First, your kidney doctor prescribed heart medicine? Second, it was in an amount that could have killed you?

What are we missing? Why is your Kidney doctor changing your heart medicine to begin with? I'd call your doctor and talk to them about what happened. Are you sure that for some odd reason you aren't supposed to be taking this medicine for your kidneys and that RiteAid may just not know your condition? Was there a mistake on the script being entered? Was your kidney doctor jsut doing a favor for you so you wouldn't have to see your heart Dr. and the medicine got entered wrong by a nurse or what? What exactly happened - What do you see as the mistake(s)?

Carla, because a lot of meds treat both of the issues. Kidney disease can cause high blood pressure, which affects the heart. High blood pressure is treated with a diuretic at times. Both affect either organ system.

Goldy, I would make sure that both doctors are communicating. If they are not, I would find a new doctor(s).

All my original prescripts were written by my heart doctor.My kidney doctor is the one who is changing things to suit him.He is not calling my heart doctor because I'm sitting there as he write out the prescription.It all started after he took my blood pressure .It was a little high and he decided to bring it down.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood what you'd said earlier, I thought the kidney doctor added something additional to what your heart doctor had already prescribed.

I don't understand why he would change a prescription written by another doctor without conferring with that doctor first.

But of course call your heart doctor on Monday. I'm sorry you had this to worry you over a weekend, hopefully it will be straightened out soon. I don't know how large a community you are in or how many choices are available to you, but wonder if there isn't someone else your doctor could recommend for kidney care who he works more closely with...

Carla35 the kidney doctor took my heart meds.and doubled it.He said it would bring my pressure down.He does not have to do me any favors because I have good insurance.Rite aid said the dose was too high and it would give me a stroke.They called the kidney doc and he said delete it.Might add I have not gotten a call from said dr.for a new rx.

I'd be a little concerned after what you just described. So your kidney doctor felt the need to double your Heart medicine prescription without consulting your heart Dr. because your blood pressure was high...

Although, I'm still not sure Rite Aid was right about the medicine amount giving you a stroke. Well, a lot of medicines 'could' give you a stroke (is it a beta blocker?)... how risky would taking it at that amount have actually been for you? I actually maybe would start with your heart Dr. --Call them and tell them what happened. Honestly ask them how bad it could have been and do they think you should be looking for a new kidney doctor. They proabably will be either irate about the matter or think it's really not a big deal and that many doctors may have done the same thing given your blood pressure. I'd see what is their opinion on what happened and maybe go from there. You could also try goggling the medicine and see if that amount is prescribed and for what.

I had a situation where I thought my allergies were acting up or I had mild asthma. I went to see my allergist, he decided it was actually Gerd and prescribed me gerd medicine which I appreciated because I didn't want to have to see a gastro. Dr. or my General but many doctors may have just referred me on. You kind of got to take the good with the bad. He may have been kind of doing you a favor and planned to follow up with your heart Dr. later, or he may just have a control issue and been really incompendent prescribing that amount. Hard to tell. Call your heart Dr. and see what they say.

Is the cardiologist acting as your internist? I hate to say it -- or add another MD into the mix -- but you may need an internist or other MD in general practice to coordinate your care. When did you last have a full physical examination, blood tests, etc.?
