Was so worth being without PC for over 12 hours

Had two updates with Windows Vista, and it took over 12 hours, BUT the upside is that my computer is running soooooo smoothly and FAST!

Guess the computer needed it!

Haha! Wondered where you were. That was a lot of updating. Mine does it in the night. I just put the computer in Sleep mode and it does housekeeping during the night. I hardly ever turn my computer off.

I did a whole computer scan a few weeks ago and it took 2-1/2 hours. Scanned over 200,000 files during that time.

Glad you're running better.

Computers are so interesting. The last two times I updated it fouled up my computer, one was minor, but the other was not. If my computer is running smoothly I don't do updates of any kind, except virus and malware updates. I do look them over and found the last one had a removal tool for virus of some kind. MS posted a notice saying "if you don't want to do the update, go to their download site, download it and run it manually. that is what I did. I am not recommended you not do the updates, just stating I don't do them anymore.

Mac vs PC - Worth the price difference?
Q

Hi Jane, I am 66 and have used a PC for many years. I attended a short computer class once and worked on a Mac. The biggest frustration I recall is that it responded to a single click and I was used to double clicking. I decided that although it would take time to get used to, I wanted to set up my PC to respond to a single click. Since then, I have set up any new computer to single click. I have a very difficult problem because I DO NOT intuit anything. I have to read instructions and even then, I may not understand. I have to do a lot of searching for very basic things: most recently, "how to use a touch pad" after I bought a 10.1 inch netbook. I sometimes use a cordless mouse because I still hate a touch pad. Returning to my inability to intuit anything and everything that "normal" users do without thinking, the problem is very real, constant, and extremely frustrating. I have to be very motivated to struggle through learning new concepts. Case in point: I use a cell phone only to make and receive calls. I have been unable to figure out how to send or receive text messages, I can't program functions like the clock or the list of people whose numbers I want to call, I can bring up a list of missed calls, but I can't easily call the person back, etc. I can't download different ring tones even though I would dearly love to find Allison Du Bois' ringtone--from the "Medium." I can find this information online but I can't figure out how to get it into my phone and then select the new app for my phone. I am not stupid. I was first a teacher and then a registered nurse and I have two MS degrees, both with high honors. I am simply brain dead in the area of the brain that allows one to intuit while on a computer. I think it is absolutely imperative that your husband sees a patient tech in a Mac store and has a chance to experience the differences between Mac and PC. Good luck! Nancy

alarm system goes off after being armed for 12 days consecutively

At this point, I wouldn't start swapping zones right now - it may just add more confusion. As far as relocating, the sensors can be sensitive to RF interference and, although they shouldn't be, temperature changes on the wall. But first, if you have the installation/service manual - not the owners manual - you can see if zone-4, or all the zones, are "supervised alarm zones/circuits." When I mentioned it may contain a resistor (end of line), it is because of supervised circuits. Supervised circuits, in simple terms, the alarm control panel is acting in a tri-state mode. It it always looking to see a certain resistance across the circuit; let's just say 1k, it's a NC circuit, and the resistor is in series. A cut of the wiring triggers a high resistance error and sets the alarm mode. Somebody who places a jumper across the wiring, triggers a low resistance error and sets the alarm mode as well. The resistor value that must be used will be listed in the installation manual. Since ambient temperature affects resistor values, placement on a wall heated by the sun could cause enough change on a high tolerance resistor to cause an error - but that's just in theory and there's usually enough tolerance in the system, but it could happen. A simple test to help determine sensor, wiring, or controller fault would be to first determine if this is a supervised circuit and it's resistance value. Disconnect zone-4 wiring, at the controller, and either jumper with the appropriate resistor (or just a short wire if non-supervised) and disable all zones but 4. Let it run for a couple weeks and see what happens. Just kind of flowchart logic from there. But actually, I also have another thought here. You mentioned zone-4 is master bedroom and home office, so I'm thinking a PC in the home office... maybe a UPS power supply? Maybe one with an "auto test feature?" I even had an APC unit that by default ran an auto test mode "about every two weeks" - now with the full cycling of the UPS, and it's temperature changes, that could possibly trigger an IR detector... just a thought.

Window Size: How much is 6-12' worth?
Q

So to answer my question: About $80 per inch. My builder gave me the quote for the change, I'm going with the 42" high window. I know it will make me that much happier. The cost to change to a wider, different style window was going to be heftier (more expensive window, a lot more labor for changing nearly the entire wall's framing, etc.) and my wife didn't want casements though we do love the look. So it made the decision quite straight forward once I had a number. So thank you, all of you. I'm so glad that I know about this place because it makes it so much easier to be able to get 10 or so very informed opinions in a few short hours when trying to make a decision like this. This won't be my last crisis post by a long shot as we have a long way to go in the build, but I want to thank all of you who chimed in. It gave me the right perspective to think ahead of time so that I knew when I saw a figure if it was worth it or not. Woo! Here's the rendering, with the proper sized window back in effect.

Minnie Royal/Royal Lee cherries in SoCal. Worth the effort?
Q
Comments (69)
I live near LAX and have a Royal Lee and Minnie Lee. The Royal Lee is a big vigorous tree entering its 5th year. My first Minnie Lee died in its 3rd year, but its replacement is now 2 years old and also vigorous. There is a very brief overlap in their flowering periods. Both trees start blooming in February. The Minnie Lee finished blooming in early March, while the Royal is just finishing end of April. The Minnie Lee was quite productive, the Royal Lee less so. Pity, because the Royal Lee produces better fruit. There is a new self-fertile low cherry called Royal Crimson which also serves as a pollinator whose bloom period reportedly spans Minnie Lee and Royal Lee. I drove to the Green Thumb nursery in Simi Valley to find them, but I bought and planted two Royal Crimsons last year. They are still practically twigs, but one of them actually bloomed and produced a single cherry.

I did the Firefox update on Thursday; had a problem.

I went to Computer Help, asked how to fix it.

And did.

No problem.

Pattie, I do my AVG auto scan at night, either 2am or 4am, don't remember which it is. And I don't remember how long it takes, 'cause it really doesn't matter since I'm asleep anyhow. ;)

Luv my PC.

I don't think I had done a Windows Vista update before, I have other updates that do their business regularly.

Clicked this one on at 4 yesterday afternoon, and it told me not to turn the pc off or unplug.
Went to bed 10is, still going, got up around 4:30 STILL going.

Finally got up around 10, and the pc had been turned off, so I know that the update was finally finished. It did two, and when I went to bed, it was still completing the first one.

I wonder why it takes so long to update. Mine never takes an hour unless I have reformatted, then 75 updates will take a long time, especially when I do them in segments of 5 at a time.

glenda, did you pay for the updates? I looked into it after reading your email yesterday, and I don't mind paying but free would be better :-) I thought I'd ask what your's was.

No, it was free.

I went my systems and maintenance and it said I needed two Windows updates, so I clicked it.

Have no idea why it took so long, but I just let it do it's thing and everything is working so smoothly now.
