I sent something two weeks ago when it first started for me. Never got a response.

What are you all experiencing? Even if I login I still have popups and commercials all over the page now. It's been very distracting and irritating for a couple of weeks or longer now. Used to when I logged in, I only saw the 'clippings' in the right hand column, no ads. Sometimes I have to log in over and over. Is this what you all are going through Patti?

I haven't had to chase an ad in a few days..but I'm still getting ads on the right side and it's throwing the page off for me!

visit the computer help forum here at GW and we will be happy to help you get firefox with ad block plus and easylist which will stop all the ads. We have been helping several people at GW with that problem

GW makes money from selling ads. They aren't about to change that. Maybe they'll tone down the flashing, but I doubt it.

Unless you are viewing this website at the office on a very restricted computer, then it's up to YOU to take control of your own computer. There are settings on your current software that will help, and you can also download software that will control the ads.

The Computer Help forum is wonderful. Stop complaining and take control of your own computer.

ahhhhh...possibly on a restricted computer. That maybe explains why folks just post here instead of getting actual help like at CH.

I'm over even recommending it anymore. It seems no one reads the replies here, or goes for assistance much at all.

I HAVE Ad Block Plus and am subscribed to Easylist.

They are ON. These new ads are random and different from the ones GW ran in the past.

All my current setting work on EVERY site but this one. So there is much more to it than people not listening.

I continue to have to block each ad as it comes up. My setting are set to identify. I'm getting fewer than most but they are coming up.

Firefox is working just fine regards the pop-ups. Doing just fine in that area.

Like some a week ago I would have said "what ads?". But this is different.

I also have FF and AdBlock and haven't seen an ad yet, not even if I've been signed out. Keep trying. Instead of just blocking the specific ad, get the URL and go back to the most basic level of that URL.

The assumption that people are not smart enough to do anything except come here and complain is very insulting and annoying. I've already done everything the experts from the computer help forum have recommended - so, now what?

I sent my complaint a couple of weeks ago, and it took about a week, but now everything is back to normal. Nobody responded, but in time, it was taken care of.

I have firefox and still have the ads. I sent in my complaint and continue to have ads.

I don't have firefox,nor have i had any ads!! Sure hope i didn't just jinx myself.

I try to keep my curser to the left of thread messages soI don't hit one of the geen message things I am getting ads on the side now when not posting I think there was a way to opt out of the hidden odes at the top of the page somewhere

this youtube video on firefox adblock plus and the easylist subscription may be helpful, just ignore the mention of the version numbers they are old since it is an older video.

just having firefox is not enough you must have both ad block plus and the easylist subscription enabled. If you do and it is not working then try going to this page and adding the easy list subscription from there. I also use the easy privacy which is on that page too.

Time to be blunt. Complaining to a free website about their choice on revenue raising is silly and selfish, especially when it's so simple to resolve in the first place. You think you're "entitled" to something? They're supposed to pay for a site to give to you? Why should they even respond to complaints like this? Given they don't respond when people are abusing the site, I certainly wouldn't expect them to reply to complaints like this. I'd have to go back and check but some sites prohibit using the site to complain about it! LOL And if memory serves that condition is in the TOS.

I've been telling people about Opera and content blocking. K-meleon is another good option. Chrome has been pretty good. Firefox is OK but it's certainly not Nirvana. There's lot of alternatives that have been repeated ad naseum and you don't have to go to CH forum to get help if you want it. But you have to be willing to accept help too.

I too am giving up. Don't understand why people have to post thread after thread about the same complaint. Every couple of days another one starts. Yes, we just "SOB" but it also is a waste of the forum since it flings off a thread at the end that might be of value. It seems similar trying to teach people you don't have to put chicken scratchings in the subject to post again when a simple space will do. I'm starting to wonder if it's a don't want to learn or can't learn. At least it's amusing.

Anyone want to bet that the ones with all the trouble have no firewall or malware protection? And odds are that all are still insisting on using the Internet Elephant. There comes a responsibility with using a computer, not unlike a car. Maybe there should be a test required to use it. At least some computer ed classes (which we used to give to our customers) to learn that you shouldn't believe spam and if you send your money overseas from it or give out all your personal info that you could have problems. I keep harping that it's important to set up a system from the day you get it BEFORE YOU EVEN LOG ONTO THE INTERNET and you need to maintain it, regularly not unlike a car. I cring every time I see a thread screaming "I JUST GOT MY NEW COMPUTER AND HERE I AM!!!" And then 2-3 weeks later "MY BRAND NEW COMPUTER IS SOOOOOOOO SLOW!!!!" (sigh)

Complaining when your car dies because you refuse to check oil isn't going to work either. You have to take care of your stuff. You have to be willing to learn and open to advice. If not, then don't complain. And when you want help, it's far easier to try to lend a hand when people will give some idea of what, if anything, they've done. "I've tried EVERYTHING" doesn't say anything. Ever go to a doctor and say "I don't feel well - what's wrong?" Or more appropriately complain to the medical board that they didn't cure you before you did anything.

Reminded of the old addage, it hurts when I do this... then don't do that! :)

I don't know why you think we're not taking steps to fix our problems, Cynic, you don't know what all we're trying. I know several of us are taking the advice of the people who are offering it, if they have credibility. I'll take ravencajun's advice any day.

And I also heard back from iVillage about the problem, so they are concerned about making their customers happy, at least in some fashion, even though their site is free. They seem to be able to understand that some of us are having NEW, recent problems.

Just as Flamingo says, I will take the advice of people who have credibility. On the other hand, its difficult to take any "advice" from a pompous blow-hard. Sure there are people who complain all the time and never do anything to help the situation. But then there are people who rarely (or never) complain who suddenly have problems. Getting on your high horse and raining down insults does not create much incentive for people to even listen to, much less take your advice.

You know Cynic, I had to drink vinegar once. And it was a more pleasurable experience than reading some of your responses. Do you ever post anything without a caustic edge? It is possible to have an opinion and still not be a jerk. I do it all the time.

Now. Back to the ads. I have ads along the side and across the top of the screen. And it DOES bother me because I tend to browse using my ipod. The ads take up so much room that I have to fiddle constantly with the screen size and scroll so much that I mostly give up before I can finish reading a post, let alone the replies and making one myself.

I know the site needs to make money. That is why I used to PAY to play here. And I liked it that way. So now it is free and there are ads, fine.

But please, not along the side so the messages are squished over, and along the top where half of my screen is crap and a tiny bit is what I want to read. And nothing that floats around the screen! Talk about obnoxious advertising....

I go through Mozilla, hope it's spelled right, and other than having to sign in, maybe every 6 weeks, I have no problems, no ads.....

Don't worry Irishdancersgram, if it's not right I am sure someone will be along shortly to correct your spelling.

I use Firefox and don't have any of the ads others are experiencing. However, when I go to My Page, it has my birthdate wrong and has eliminated my 2 favorite forums. When I go to Profile to correct this, it has my birthdate correct, but shows n/a for my two favorite forums. I correct this, hit the Save button, and it reverts back to n/a. And yes, I did go through the message in red at top of main page and sent them an email about it.

If you use AOL you can block most pop-ups from GW. While you're on GW, go to the bottom of your AOL screen and click on "Blocking Pop-ups." Then click on what you want to block and it will specifically block GW's pop-ups.

Someone on GW told me this awhile back and it worked! It sure was annoying before I did this.

I have not seen a single ad on any of these forums.
I use my HOST file to block ads.

I have IE, and have no pop ups or flashing ads. There is 1 (one) ad at top right hand corner and that's all.
