Supermarket 'Dinners'

Has anyone ever had those dinners that major supermarket chains advertise for holiday dinners?

We are going north for the holiday and need to eat when we get there....

Where we lived up north they usually offer you a prepared ham or turkey and two or more sides

and a dessert for a set price.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? Or used this?

Have never used a supermarket. Have done it through a restaurant. How bad can it be? And if it's awful, you'll always have a "remember when...."?? story! :)

My friend that is recovering from knee surgery had a turkey dinner like that for Thanksgiving and she said it was pretty good. I think she is going for the ham one for Christmas, as she is still recovering. I think she may have gotten it at Kroger.

dicot... How sweet did yours turn out? I'm a few years into playing with a pepper which part of its lineage came out of one of those "costco-like super sweet peppers". It's not the same, but in the same ballpark. I started some years ago that grew out and I've tinkered with crosses (one good, 2 bad), but the one good one has taken through 3 generations so far. This is just a hobby for me to get a sweet pepper with semi-thick (or thick) walls that isn't the size of a bell pepper. I just don't use that much bell pepper. I still want the super-sugary taste, though. Mine have developed over the years into a vigorous plant that sets a lot flowers/fruits. It's also got some pretty intense branching. How do yours look? My only complaint so far, which is one of the main things im trying to breed for in order to change, is how long it takes to get ripened peppers. I'm looking at 80-90 days from transplant to "color breaking" ripe with what I'm working with. That's fine for bell peppers, but we're talking about 2.5-3" fruits here for the most part.

I want them to make some " see the thing that is right in front of your face glasses" he is constantly saying what did you do with so and so I can not find it and I know you moved it! My reply is it is right where it has always been just look. NOPE not there I told you so. Then I walk(actually roll) up and right in front of him I pick up said item and hand it to him from RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE! Then he says well it wasn't there a second ago LOL why can't they just admit defeat? LOL Last weekend he tore my laundry room up looking for a certain light bulb, I told him exactly, I mean exactly, which shelf it was on etc, well naturally he could not find it, after I start to hear things falling and crashing I go in there to find him on a ladder going through all the top shelves (I am in a wheel chair do you think I can reach those top shelves? ) I go directly to the shelf(lowest) I told him it was on, pull it out and hand it to him as he stands on his ladder and watched. He then said well how did you find that? This is why I keep my hair short now not so easy to pull it out. LOL oh the joys of getting older.

This is all so interesting! Gelsons, which is a small, local chain, which used to be very upscale, is not what it was. You used to be able to get anything at Gelsons and the quality of their produce and meats was legendary. Then you couldn't get just anything there, but they'd order it for you. Then they'd only order it if their distributors had it and they had many fewer offerings on the shelves. They also seemed to have joined that thing where brands can rent shelf space because there bloomed whole shelves of cheap strawberry and grape jam for PBJs and all the lovely selections of different jams was no more. Finally, the produce started to be meh, and the meat was no longer top tier. It used to be that at Gelson's you didn't really have to look at the produce. Pick up one from the top, it's pretty, put it in the bag. Pick up the next one, it's pretty, take it home. No more. They now have wrinkly peppers! That might not sound shocking to everyone, but it's horrifying in a place like Gelson's. And the last straw was when the meats turned tough. I'll still stop in if I'm parked nearby, but I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's (great prices and good quality) or Whole Foods (great variety and top to near top quality, though not sorted for perfection like the old Gelson's). Whole Foods, however, has taken to having more and more of only their house brands and less variety. I know they need to make a buck, but they're relying too much on computer models. A recurring pattern is I find a product I like and then have to order it direct from the maker or on Amazon because they don't carry it any more. It's like they swallowed a Trader Joe's pill and only want their name on stuff. :) At least with the branded products, you can get them on Amazon. You have to beg for canned tomato puree. It'll be on the shelf for awhile, then disappear. The only people who use it are people who cook, so it doesn't have a big sell through and they don't reorder until someone complains. And it's not the kind of thing TJ's has at all. :) Plus, if you order meats for a party form the butcher at Whole Foods, they might or might not have it when you come to pick it up. So you see, I'm currently on a hate of most grocery stores. The only things I buy at the big chains are paper goods, and a very few national brand staples. Every single Trader Joe's parking lot is crazy. They also are far more likely to have packaged goods which have gone off. Even one of their freezer tote bags had a smell problem. They give refunds cheerfully, though, and always make good. And everyone is so nice there (it's company policy) and they empty your cart. So even though they don't have everything (they were founded as an accessible gourmet store for people with educated palates on teachers' salaries), and the parking is crazy-making, it's my current favorite. Yeah, they only have some favorites during specific times of year and others disappear, but they don't nix whole categories and shelves. Can't get a rutabaga there though. :)

Yay, Wegmans! 2 within driving distance. Great produce. Their regular pantry items -- canned goods, pasta, spices, bread -- aren't really priced any higher than other stores', but I suppose other parts of the store could be considered upscale -- that is, the prepared foods areas, their seafood counter (not just salmon, but salmon stuffed with crabmeat or already marinated) and their specialty meat counter (not where you'd pick up regular hamburger or chicken -- that's nearby in the store -- but a counter that has special cuts or treatments of meats that you'd use for a dinner party, or a party of 2. ooh-la-la! Nope -- never had a need for the specialty stuff, tho. Oh, and also a cafe right near the meat/fish aisles where you can order up sushi or whatever else the chef might be cooking up. Never done that (I like eating out where the decorating is a bit more than the scent of meats, esp. seafood! And I don't want to be eating while shoppers are walking by and looking!) Some of the Whole Foods have that "cafe-restaurant in the middle of the store" too -- I just don't get that! But I understand it's a trend in more grocery stores, Wegmans does have a nice salad bar (I know, so do other stores) and an awesome hot-foods bar (Chinese, Indian, Thai, very good quality food), with a nice sit-down area with a lot of tables. I will occasionally eat lunch there before doing my grocery shopping. I haven't looked at Consumers to see what the criteria were, but I'd venture that it's customer service, clean and well-stocked aisles, superior produce, quick easy out (as in enough cashiers, which can be a big problem in some of my other stores). Wegmans is very slow (maybe thoughtful or careful would be better words) when it comes to opening up new stores. They have very specific training sessions (more than how to use the cash register), and they don't want to grow so big so fast that they lose quality control. (An article in my local paper a couple of years ago when a new store opened in the area outlined the regimented processes, including sending training teams from established stores.) I don't shop at Wegmans regularly (there's another grocery a few blocks away that gives gas points -- yay!), but when I'm doing other errands near one, I certainly stop there. If only for their pretzel rolls!

I did it once. Not at Christmas, but it was a Christmas-like dinner when family was visiting. It was from Shaw's and it was wonderful. Of course, a big bonus is the ease of it (I was swamped and stressed at the time and this was the only way I could handle it), but the food really was good. We had turkey, gravy, and I can't remember the sides.

I've not but a very good friend of mine does it for both T-giving and Christmas every year. She is in retail and there is no way she has the time nor energy to prepare her own. She swears by them!

Some of my friends have done that. You usually get a turkey or ham with all the trimmings/sometimes you get to select the sides. They have all been happy with the quality. The prices didn't seem that bad, and of course the conveinence.

I ate one at a friend's house who did it for T-day. I was impressed with the offerings and the quality. It would depend on who does the preparation though of course. A bad restaurant or deli is going to produce a bad spread. A good one will most likely try to maintain their reputation for excellence with a quality meal.

We have several stores in the area that do this; they are very good, but not "grandma good". They are a lifesaver if you are traveling close to the holiday. Just make sure you check to see if you need to pre-order; many of our stores will run out of the Christmas dinner "kits" well before Christmas Eve.

I checked the website for the shoprite at home and it wasn't in their ad for this week.
So I contacted an old friend and asked her and she said they were offering them this year and gave me the phone # to call.
I am hoping this will work out,for oh so many reasons....
I 'm going to call and see what the offerings are.

We got one from Wegman's a few years ago but not for Christmas. Ours was a late summer family reunion. DD made all the arrangements with Wegman's from out of town by phone. They were very helpful.

We had turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy--all surprisingly good. No complaints.

We have done Safeway in a box many years ago. No where near as good as homemade but better than what most restaurants serve as holiday dinners.

An elderly friend of mine does this occasionally for holiday dinners when she and her husband have their sons over. She said it cost her $70 for a whole turkey, dressing, msh.pot salad and dessert. I was thinking there was something else but can't remember now. It's from a local supermarket.

Fresh Market does that for Thanksgiving.
Don't know if they do for Christmas.

did it in 2006, when i had no time to do anything for turkey-day. it was actually my dh's idea, since dinner responsibilities would fall on him. we ordered from Publix and the mashed potatoes and salty gravy were great, nothing else was good, including the turkey that came in a plastic bag you cooked it in :-0 even non-picky dh didn't like it lol ~ liz

My daughter wailed about not having left overs, the year she came for TG. When she returned home, she went to Krogers, and got turkey left overs. Said it was really good. But, none of us ever bought one of those dinners.

Cracker Barrel does pickup meals. Friend used them Thanksgiving.

If you do not have a store in the area, contact certain restaurants. Do you need the turkey or ham? Could you order part of it and do the rest? Chicken? Where north are you going? Google the area and then call.

Friends of ours ordered their holiday dinner from Boston Market, and said it was really good.
