Christmas present scavengar hunt

I like to give my son and a niece cash for Christmas. But because they are of college age, they are a bit embarrassed by just getting cash gifts. They both expressed that although they like getting cash for a gift, it often feels like they are getting a handout. So, I was thinking something along the lines of making it fun, like a scavenger hunt. I thought that maybe I could use a song like "12 days of Christmas" and hide the cash in spots that are referenced in the song. For example, "a partridge in a pear tree" could be a clue to a bird that I have hidden in the Christmas tree. What do you think of this idea? Any suggestions on how to handle lines of the songs such as "seven swans a swimming" or eight maids a milking"? Or do you have any other suggestions?

My grandkids like the visa/master charge gift cards that can be used anywhere instead of cash.

while it sound like fun i have to agree with marie...get them a cash card....

i did go out to the (new to us) below/five store and found small safes (with a combo lock, lol) and am using them for the cards for kids and adults to have a "present" to open...

These all sounds great. Better than with what I started. Kathy, I'm 45 :) Dweeb is something I hear often since I work with a bunch of nerds. Heck, for Christmas I gave my boss a plaque with his name spelled out using chemistry symbols and the definition of a "geek" (or was it nerd?). We're proud to be dweebs, usually. Just not this time! Nerds are salt of the earth.

The only present we could buy our cat would be food. He believes he is CONSTANTLY starving! It's a fight to keep him at the 14 lb stage, and even that is 3 lbs over what he was when he first snuck inside the house as a stray, LOL. We had to take him in for $3K worth of dental work (8 yrs old, had to have teeth cleaned, two root canals and several pulled!). A week later the surgeon called me to ask how he was doing. "Is he eating okay?" the doctor asked. I replied, "Oh, if he's breathing....he's eating!"

i certainly do not feel wrong for how our family celebrates Christmas Each family has to figure out what works best for them, and it depends on the family. Our extended family is getting large and unwieldy with all of our kids growing up and pairing off and having kids, and thank goodness early on in our marriage they stopped the stupid gag gifts. The ones my husband and I got always went straight to the Goodwill in the New Year. I also hated some of the terrible gifts my kids got from family when they were little -- often very noisy battery-consuming things, like a plastic hammer that said BANG BANG, and a stick horse that neighed when a button in the ear was pressed (I did surgery on that one in the middle of the night, much to my child's shock and disappointment the next day). One sil gives everyone in the family a pair of socks. Another of my husband's family members who lives locally gives each family a selection of homemade cookies. The sil who lives across the country gives nothing but sends cards. Another puts lottery tickets in a Christmas card to each family member. We have a farm, so often we give beef : ) . Two of our nieces have had kids in the past few years, so it's fun to have little ones to shop for; I've been getting board/picture books. With my kids getting older, and now establishing their own households, things are changing yet again. Plus on my shopping list I am down one girlfriend and up one boyfriend lol. Just to keep me on my toes...

If they like cash and want cash and it doesn't bother
you, go for it! A scavenger hunt would be really fun!
or money origami...

I bought some great wood turned round boxes to put
my niece's and nephew's money in this year

Great ideas! I especially like the origami idea. Looks like you would have to "unwrap" the origami to see what denomination of bills you got too!

Save your small boxes that checks come in, that is a good size for cards, money, and other tiny things. They also fit good in many desk drawers.

Cute idea! Are they the type of kids who would enjoy such an activity? If so, then go for it. My sons always enjoyed receiving cash. They loved receiving portraits of dead presidents.

Do they still make Swans Down cake mixes? That could cover your swans. For eight maids a milking, you could always tape the money to the milk carton/jug.

You can always give them an assortment of gift cards depending on where they usually shop. T.J. Maxx, Target, Burger King, McDonalds J. Crew, iTunes whatever.....and maybe a little extra cash instead of just giving them all cash.
