Yet another question about tipping

I have been in the hospital fighting pneumonia and my hair very badly needed a good washing and cutting. I was able to get to one of the $12 haircut places to get it done. I really like the way the woman cut my hair- not the owner. Actually, it was $16 dollars. I gave her a $20 and didn't want change back. At $16 a cut I feel like I can afford to go every two to three weeks and keep my hair looking decent. But I feel that $4 is not enough for a tip. I'm wondering how much any of you would tip.

Sounds like enough tip to me. $3.20 is 20% and I would have rounded it off to $4.00 myself.

I think $4 is plenty. She probably doesn't get that much from most of her customers. I'd probably hand her a couple of dollar bills and feel like I was tipping her plenty.

They don't have to be that close together. Within 100 feet should do it. Anywhere in a normal sized yard that looks good would be the way I would go.

Thank you! This is an existing bath/shower enclosure. The sheetrock is already there. The old walls had tile with like an inch of mud underneath. Our GC is putting the hardibacker over the sheet rock to bring the depth back up for thinset and tile which will have a similar profile as the old tile in that there are 1/2" bead trim pieces for the edges...it will not bump the shower beyond the rest of the wall at all. Given this, is it okay to have the following... sheetrock 15lb felt hardibacker 500 thinset and tile Thanks again!

Hi there smm5525. I studied ergonomics while I was a kitchen designer. Ergonomics has been a major factor in my sink designs. I based the height of the ledges on my many years of studies. Cutting at that level does not force a downward angle. If you look in the video above, you will see there is no downward angle required. It is very comfortable to cut veggies, etc. I actually pioneered this and many other ideas. The double tiered sink has three patents on the design. I also came up with the rear corner drain about 18 years ago. I saw many sink companies with rear corner drains this year at KBIS. I am so glad to see that. The sinks with interior ledges, both single and double were also my ideas quite some time before everyone got on board. I have about 13 patents on my designs. Sadly, some companies have copied them figuring I am a small company and I would not get in a fight with the big guys. They are right! One more comment/complaint and then I will try to leave it aside for now -- with this new format, every time you open a thread, it opens a new tab or window on your browser. That seems totally unnecessary -- unless every window opened generates revenue somehow, but simply clicking through to another page doesn't, and it creates problems on the viewer's end. Maybe this is all revenue driven redesign, in which case loyals and conversations don't matter as much as a lot of people clicking around trying to find stuff -- at least in the short term.

If they advertised $12, why was it $16? Anyways, if I really liked the cut, I would have given her $25. That's very cheap for a haircut. It's not always about the 20%.

Thanks for your answers. lindakathy, I think they used to charge $12 but it has gone up to $16. I should have gone back to change my post but I didn't. Sorry. Guess I'll make the decision of how much to tip when I go back. It will probably be more than the $4 though especially if she does a good job again.

................y'all don't wanna know my answer. LOL Okay, maybe you do. If they advertised $12 and charged me $16 they already made an extra $4. They would be lucky to get $2 out of me. Yes, I'm stingy that way.

I think that $20 includingt a $4 tip is a bargain and if you really like the way she did it then you have seriously scored a win!

I find in the long run you kind of get what you pay for with those cheaper hair places (and I don't mean just with skill, but with attitude, and professionalism). They tend to go a lot quicker too.

That said, I've noticed the good stylists often move on to other salons rather quickly. The one you like may not be there forever, or even next month. Or, she may be inconsistant and not remember how she cut your hair last time.

Glad you had a nice experience and, I think $4 is perfect amount if you are happy with your cut. I don't think you need to go over board with tipping. A $20 tip at a steak house is one thing, but there's no need to tip $20 for the chili at Steak 'N Shake no matter how much you like it or how nice your server is. You don't have to pay this new girl $50 just because that's how much you paid you last stylist. It's a different set up and a different place. A 20-25% tip is fine for a great hair cut.

I'm pretty certain the haircut was $12 - but she also had a shampoo, and that's where the extra $4 came from.

The shampoo is not included in the price, which is one reason I patronize that sort of place. I simply can't have my hair shampooed in one of those sinks or I wouldn't be able to move my neck for a week!

I go in with clean hair, and they simply spray it wet with a spray bottle.

And $4 was a generous tip.
