Ooo, I wouldn't use anything scented, just baking soda. The 'scent' is just chemicals which won't make your dog very happy and isn't good for you. Sorry, just had to add my 2 cents! (The scents are made to cover up odor.) Can you let the soda sit for awhile before vacuuming up?

You could lightly spray it with odoban it's wonderful stuff it eliminates odor and kills just about every germ, bacteria and virus so would be a good way to sanitize it. I buy mine by the gallon at Costco and Sam's. But you can buy the spray bottle at other locations. I have seen it at home Depot and Lowe's at times. I keep it on hand and use it for so many things. Great stuff. I have always used the original, none of the other variety.

I agree with raven. You can get spray stuff that is odorfree. It's far more effective than the powder stuff.

I'm curious, can you please say more about that? Are man made scents less good for me than natural scents (which at some level must also be chemical)? I sometimes use one of those wax warmers with scented waxes, is that dangerous? For me? For my dog?

I would use a spray of water and vinegar. It works wonderfully at removing any smells, and it's completely natural and non-toxic. And cheap! My cleaning product cost for the year has been about $2. :)

I try to avoid commercial cleaners/deodorizers, especially around my pets as there are often unhealthy additives that aren't always disclosed on the packaging.

Your house will smell like pickles for a little while but once it dissipates there's no lingering smell at all, just clean. I use it to refresh carpets, couches and pillows.

Whatever you use will be on your dog's fur and when he or she licks. I would just keep washing. I never use soap when washing my pet bowls, toys and blankets because no amount of rinsing is going to remove ALL and every trace of residue. I would just wash the fleece with white vinegar. I don't even use cleaners on floors because I don't let my cats walk on chemical residue.

I've been eating off dishes all my life and wash them with soap. I think my entire home must have residues of one kind or another.

Any kind of soap or dish detergent you use will rinse off with water and leave little or no residue. If you're concerned about it, rinse twice. What's left, if anything, doesn't matter for humans or animals.

Lucille, some of the most toxic products we have in our homes are the artificially scented things. The manufacturers get away with it because they are often added in tiny amounts. But when we are exposed all day, every day to these petrochemicals in our soaps, laundry products, foods, perfumes, and air fresheners, the exposure can be damaging.

The list of those who should avoid the use of scented household products are babies, children, the elderly, pregnant women, men and women who plan to have babies (the chemicals affect sperm), those with compromised immune systems, those taking meds that may affect their liver, all pets (birds and cats are especially sensitive).

Even those products labeled "natural, organic" and the like can be loaded with some of these chemicals.

My live in boy friend is a former chemical engineer. He even washes fruit like apples and pears with dish detergent. He says it's just a surfectant (whatever that is) and can't hurt you.

It's the additives that turn ordinary dish detergent into something that might be a problem. By the time you take a detergent (which isn't a true soap) and add fragrances, dyes, grease busters, foaming agents, and stabilizers, you've created a product that's a no-no for me.

I use a liquid true soap, not a detergent, at my sinks. Mine happens to be a local product, Green Mountain Soap. I have no problem whatsoever using their products on my produce, my hands, face.

When I do use a liquid dish detergent, the gloves go on.
