Anyone else eat something perticular on New Years Day?

I know, some people eat black eyed peas, and just read about the sauerkraut...

What is the tradition at your house?

Here, for me, we do a first bike ride of the year on New Years Day. But this year, with the ice on the road, I will skip it, and just host the party instead. :)

Black-eyed peas for luck and greens (kale) for $$$. In Indiana we ate sauerkraut--ick! What do you eat?

I didn't know it got so cold and icy in Oklahoma. I always think of it as a "warm" state. But you've sure had your fill already. Loved your pictures!

I've had black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck for years. Then, on NWDay of 2009 I didn't fix any. Had breast cancer in 2009. It's probably just a coincidence ... but hey ... I don't think I'll be skipping it in 2010!

Thanks to you all for your replies. We were watering again last night and my husband said we should just pull them up and start over, instead of watering and getting nothing (another concern because we are on a well and haven't had enough rain to mention since early June, if then). I just keep thinking the tomatoes will surely start to produce. I raise a couple of heirlooms including Green Zebra, which will normally produce over 100 tomatoes per plant (my experince with them) and I've had three!!!!!! Oh and squash bugs. We got invaded last year and I'm at my wits end with them. I have tried to be an organic gardener but if ever something makes me reach for the poison it will be the squash bugs. I've pulled thousands of eggs, 100 of mature bugs and nyphms but everyday there are more. At least this year I know to keep working at it every day, last year they killed my plants. But this year I don't have squash ripening so don't know why I am so worried, guess I want to beat the little beasts! My mom in in South Arkansas and she has yet to have a single okra. Said it is shoulder high but just now getting flowers. Dad said she has the prettiest garden he's ever seen, not a lot out of it, but way more than I've had. I hope this isn't our new normal. COLD winters and HOT summers..... may have to look at a climate controlled garden!

Behind??? A definite YES !! I'm like 'cyn' above. Plants still in pots lining my walkway (most convenient place to keep watered) but I hate it since that's where my new raised bed runs. So instead of walking by and seeing it all neat and proper, full of lush new plants -- you end up seeing this jumbled line-up of various others all smushed together and up against it, plus bags of mulch still laying there. I keep putting the potted plants out in my garden to figure out where to plant them and then end up hauling them all back to the walkway to give them a deep watering. It's a real pain. Plus I had ordered some bare root special colored day lilies and turns out the ones I planted aren't coming up in the colors promised. Was supposed to have a Mildred Mitchel (Fushia with green eye) and it came up yellow, like a Stella, only a little lighter and seems to burn the moment it blooms. So I'm waiting for the others to bloom to see what I end up with before planting THEM since I hae a color sheme they were supposed to go with. Then one Brilliant Circle (cream, red eye) arrived dead (have no idea if It will bloom that color). And I got duplicates of some orange Tigress something (like I need more orange daylilies) instead of the Coral Seas (which the replacements FINALLY came a couple day ago from the original order in APRIL !!!) I definitely got my money back on THAT order !! But one day, I'll catch up, I suppose. That is, if I don't keep buying MORE plants on sale. And just bought some annuals to make up two big pots for beside my steps. Did get my four hanging baskets done last week so that's behind me. My issue has been that I can't plant in full sun in the AM so by the time evening comes, I'm just too worn out from doing other gardening. And the darn mosquitoes are out now, giving me a fit. I hate to have to spray myself down every night but it's a must.

I worked out in the garden, mostly pulling the winter weeds that have sprouted everywhere, and transplanting volunteer chamomile seedlings from the pathways to beds. There's also a lot of Laura Bush petunias sprouting in pathways, but I didn't have time to dig and move any of them. We still have producing broccoli plants in one part of the garden, and two cabbage plants that somehow survived the summer and look decent. Since I did harvest heads from the cabbage plants last spring by cutting the heads off a couple of inches above the ground, the remaining stalks are more likely to go to seed than to form heads. I left the plants themselves in the ground because sometimes they make secondary, small heads but they didn't form any small heads last summer or fall. I am sort of surprised they survived the heat. I hope to spend time today weeding the flower border that runs alongside the eastern edge of the veggie garden. It is full of poppy and larkspur plants, but there's winter grass coming up in the middle of all of them and I want to get it out of there so it won't be crowding them. It was such a warm day that bees and butterflies were out, as were tons of birds. It really felt more like an April day than a winter one. Henbit is in bloom here, so at least the butterflies had something to visit. The bees spent most of them time visiting the cracked corn I put out for the doves. I also cleaned up miscellaneous plant debris and put it on the compost pile, and refilled all the birdfeeders. We are feeding tons of birds this winter, and I love having them around. Then I harvested catnip from places where it is scattered here and there around the garden. I use it as an insectary plant to attract beneficial insects when it blooms, but it also attracts a lot of cats. In the winter, I cut it back hard and put the catnip on the sunporch for the cats to play with. It hit 74 degrees here at our house around 3:15 p.m. but then the cold front rolled in during the evening hours and the wind just howled and gusted and carried on for a long time. I suppose today's weather won't be nearly as nice as yesterday's, but it still is pretty pleasant weather for this time of the year. One great thing about the wind the last couple of days is that the red oaks which have uncharacteristically held onto their leaves forever this year are finally dropping them now. Usually it is the post oaks who keep their leaves until spring, but they lost all their leaves long before the tardy red oaks. Our ground is moist but not wet and muddy since rain hasn't fallen in at least a couple of weeks now. Overall, though, it still is very dry and with January historically being our driest month, I don't have very high hopes for a lot of moisture to fall this month. We need to mow the lawn this afternoon. We overseeded it with winter rye, and that stuff grows like mad. I do like having the sea of green grass around the house in winter. It also gives the rabbits and other wild things something to nibble on in the winter time too. Chandra, Sorry you're missing the great weather. It has been just gorgeous for the last 4 or 5 days. "Well my son has become picky now..so it must be a boy thing." It totally could be a boy thing! I think for SS some of it is just getting used to eating a certain way w/BM and then having to switch over to our menu. After having been with BM for 10 of the last 14 days, he wasn't adjusted to our food yet. He's in camp this week and the lunch I packed for him was NOT a hit b/c he's used to BM or grandma's lunches. When he came home on Wed, his trash was all in his lunchbox, and some of the food was leftover---I was shocked to see the lunch. A ham sandwich, which is fine, and he had eaten most of it. Then a Hi-C drink, which isn't great since it's just pure sugar. A fruit roll-up wrapper. Half-eaten bag of king-sized M & Ms. And a pop-tart wrapper. ????? So the lunch I packed---and this is very typical what the kids eat at our house for lunch--I packed him a PB&J on whole wheat bread. Fresh blueberries. Small stack of low-fat Pringles. Apple & Eve 100% juice box. And two fig newtons. I just try to keep things balanced---I am totally fine w/the kids having "junk food" so long as it's in moderation. I don't mind them having a small serving of chips or cookies w/lunch, esp. when it's a packed lunch for camp, but I make sure that there is ALWAYS a fruit w/it, and that the treats I pack aren't *too* bad! Anyway, SS didn't eat a bite of the sandwich b/c he doesn't like wheat bread, he wanted white, which is what BM buys. But he DOES eat wheat over here all the time, we never buy white---I guess he had just grown accustomed to BM's food. He didn't eat the blueberries and didn't eat the fig newtons either. So I guess he had Pringles for lunch yesterday. oh well. He will re-adjust---haha, just in time to go back to BM's, and then we will start all over again when he gets back!

This is the year I'll be breaking from the traditional Blackeyes Peas, Collards and Fried Hog Jowl (with cornbread and sweet tea of course). Tradition says the Peas are for "coins", the Collards are for "Dollars" and the How Jowl is for luck! It's never worked in the past!! I'm thinking of doing Peas,Cabbage and maybe Pork Chops (with Cornbread and sweet tea of course)*S*

When I first bought my house I had a New Years party and I made sloppy joes as part of the food offering. Some out of town friends were there and were so impressed. We were getting together for New Year annually after that for a lot of years and Ann wanted sloppy joes every time. She wanted my recipe and wanted to duplicate it. So for a long time after we were together eating sloppy joes to ring in the new year. Haven't been together with them for a lot of years now, but this got me thinking about it and maybe I'll head to the store and get the fixings for a memory. And now that I think of it I have a bottle of champagne I should chill...

Our traditional meal for New Years Day is corned beef and cabbage, black-eyed peas, greens, and cornbread.

Not New Year's day, but New Year's eve...we always have potato soup and sometimes fondue (which we will be having tonight)
Two of the grands were here yesterday and we made some 2010 signs to put up.
They will be here tonight.

Oldest daughter will not be here...I guess they are having Christmas with her husband's side of the family tonight..
Will miss having them..but that is okay.

Don't think Jeff will be here either...He coaches wrestling at one of our local high schools and they are having a "lock in" with their wrestlers tonight...Keeping them off the streets and away from the "booze". They've got a lot of movies, food and fun planned for them.

we'll be at my sister's - Roast Pork, Dumplings (spaetzle) and Saurkraut with apple pie for dessert!

Ours is the same as Wanda's. I hate black eyed peas, but will eat some for luck. I'm not crazy about corned beef either.
I think maybe I will start a new tradition and add ribs to the menu. Maybe some ice cream too.

Pattico: I congratulate Jeff on foregoing any plans he might have so he can do the 'lock in' with the team members. I wish more things like this took place to keep our kids safer.

Since I do not like blackeyed peas, I would eat only 2 for luck on New Years day, and only ate those because my mother insisted.

She said that when she was "expecting me" she cooked dried black eyed peas often as they were a staple during the post depression years, and that she had to hold her nose while opening the lid to add water because of morning sickness. I still do not care for them, but like crowder and purple hulled ones.

I'm trying something new this year.

A neighbor gave me a recipe for Black eyed pea soup, so I'm making that.

I happen to love BEPs and this recipe includes kale so it covers all the "good luck" stuff. I'll also make broccoli cornbread.

Pork and sauerkraut with mashed potaotes here. I have it in the electric roaster because I am going to an auction tomorrow. Family is scattered this year. I'll just take some to mom tonight. Mom usually made dumplings, but I can live without them.

Nothing special when I was a little girl we always had a ham for NYD dinner.

A neighbor gave me a honey spiral Ham and maybe I'll cook that just to get it out of the fridge

We'll have pork and saurkraut with mashed potatoes, and I'll make cabbage and noodles or just plain cooked cabbage for me, as I don't like kraut. I have a piece of smoked pork loin in the freezer, so that will probably be our pork.

We have to have BPE too. When Dad was here he always cooked them with hog jawl.I always took a small bite, but still don't like them. But, I won't take a chance and skip them. So, they are on the menu.

My grandma always made us eat a piece of herring on new years eve (she said it would bring you good luck all year)

On New years day we always had, & still make her tuna pizza.

I'm having peas and cabbage. For those loving cabbage and want to try something different...Chop and fry 4 slices of bacon, add chopped cabbage, pour in chicken broth (I use Swanson) and cook to desired doneness. I like my cabbage to stay crisp. Best I have ever eaten. I could have eaten the whole cabbage in one sitting!!!!
