I've taken lots of it and not had a problem with swelling. But I've not taken it for long periods of time.
It will make one's face pretty puffed up, taken long term.
I hate predisone. It does weird things to me and sleep is unheard of when on it.

When my DM was on prednisone, her face swelled up so much, she was unrecognizable. I have a picture of her all dressed up, standing with my DF, and I asked who the lady was with Dad....LOL! As soon as she stopped taking them, her face went back to normal.

He has the "moon" face..not as bad now as it was last week. On the other hand, his feet/calves are very puffy. It was a week this past Thursday that he came home from the hospital. Can short-term (4-5 days) use cause the same side-effects as long term use?

My nephews sugars go whacko when on steroids (prednisone). And he puffs up/swells, and gets that moon face. This is because they usually give his such a high dose to start with. Mom's been on them for years at a lower dose. She did swell at first. DO NOT quit taking them cold turkey if on them. You have to taper down.

I'd work the opposite way you are working and try to look up swollen feet to get a possible answer. I have never heard of Prednisone doing that, but I don't doubt it could happen. I would think an allergy to an antibiotic would be more common though... although usually I would think symptoms would go away after the medicine has stopped.

Hopefully whatever he has isn't serious. Do you have another doctor (or even on real doctor) you could call and run your concerns by? Swollen feet can be a serious issue. Plus, there are some strange things that can be picked up in hospitals.

The moon face is common, Steve had it too but he was on prednisone for a very long time. Weight gain etc are pretty common too.
I hope they figure it out.

The fluids of the IV plus the prednisone will cause fluid retention in the whole body and should drain in time through the natural body processes. How long was he on the IV? The fact that he was, I would assume, inactive during this time adds to the retention probabilities. Prednisone used short term is a great drug and safe.

I was on a high dose of prednisone by mouth for about 3 months. The effects are disturbing to be sure. I am now on a low dose, probably for the rest of my life. The moon face is pretty much gone, but I am told that I will likely never loose all of the belly bloat or the fatty roll at the base of my neck that came from the earlier high dose.

I've only been on it for short periods with chemo and once when my asthma got out of control. That time I was on it for about 10 days before I was completely weaned off it. I never did have swelling using it for that short a period. I would look for other causes for the edema as well.

An endoscopy just showed a bleeding polyp in my stomach which the gastroenterologist said was caused by years of prednisone use (whice I've had because of both arthritis and severe allergies.) But it takes a long time for that to happen, I understand. What it does for me is really hype me up...can't sleep and bounce off the walls for a period of time.

I am not an MD and don't want to be an alarmist. That said, I do work in healthcare and used to do consulting with our cardiology unit. Did they do a chest x-ray when your husband was in the hospital? We routinely saw patients who had been diagnosed with and treated for bronchitis who actually were having problems related to congestive heart failure which can cause fluid in the lungs (hence the thought that it was bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.) and is notorious for causing fluid to build in the lower extremities. A chest x-ray would have shown if there was a problem with an enlarged heart which is one part of the diagnostic work-up.

Gazania..they started him on antibiotics almost as soon as he got to the ER (once they determined he had bronchitis)on Nov.25 and he was on it until he was dismissed on Nov.29th. He was also on steroids while going through the Chemo. His last Chemo was Nov.12th. I'm assuming they gave it to him while giving the Chemo, because he wasn't taking anything at home.

His feet actually got a little puffy on Friday BEFORE he went back to the hospital (He went in for blood transfusion on Nov.20th and was dismissed on on Thanksgiving Day.) I called the Dr. the next day (Sat.25th) and told him his feet were swelling. He phoned in a water pill. He took one that night..and the next day. They also gave it to him while he was IN the hospital...but discontinued it when he was dismissed.

My DH received Prednison for a sudden loss of hearing problem but his blood sugar went out of sight, but the web site i went to said if there was any swelling, and in his case it was his legs to call the Dr. I did immedicately, and both the hearing Dr and his reg Dr said to stop immediately. He now lists it as a algeric reaction. If you are diabetic, they do not reccomend it. Yes the hearing came back.

Sienne..looks like you and I both posted about the same time..then I had to run to Walmart. Yes, they DID do x-rays the night he went to ER.

Marie..DH is a diabetic and it caused his blood sugars to go WAY high. They're back within range now though.*S*

Retaining fluids is a very dangerous side effect of prednisone. I took it for 5 days once (a 7 day pack) and so much fluid built up in my chest, that they had to take me off so I wouldn't go into congestive heart failure. It took me a long time for all the side effects to go away, the headaches, sleeplessness, puffiness, shortness of breath, and chest pains.

I took them last month ,but for only a week and didn't have any problem.I think short term they're ok,but long term they can cause all kinds of problems.My cousin was on them long term and he got sooooooooooo swollen he couldn't even walk.But he had to take them in order to be able to breathe.His brother told me that at the end he couldn't get out of bed to even go to the bathroom,and if he didn't know that was his brother,he never would have guessed it,the swelling was soooo bad.

I've taken them a couple of times,but for only a week at a time and they worked wonders for me.

I was on Prednisone for a week and had no bad side effects and no swelling. In fact, it made me feel much calmer than usual and I didn't have quite my normal appetite. The hardest part was coming off it because I liked how I felt while on it!
