Lego makes block toys for infants that are really cute, just right for their hands to hold, make noise, have faces, and stack.

A walking push toy with other entertaining "stuff" on it. He'll use it very soon.

My kids used to have a collapsible tunnel that was great fun to learn to crawl in.

Keep it simple...my DGS will be 10 months friday - his favorite - pushing a chair around the kitchen that has his booster seat on it - he's been walking since before he turned 9 months!!! he also just picks up a 8 x 8 inch box he just carries it around,
but he does play with the Duplo blocks - the big legos, knocking them together...and of course everything goes in the mouth!

I second the walking toy. I didn't have much to buy for Daniel since he has Nick's toys and at 6 months he won't know any better. I didn't want Nick to wonder why Santa didn't bring the baby anything so I bought him an Incrediblock and a few small things. A music CD, a Sesame Street DVD (for when he's ready. It's the 25th Anniversary which is my favorite. We wore threw the VHS tape when Nick was younger.)

Dan is really into rattles and things he can chew on. When I picked him up at daycare yesterday he was propped up in front of this toy that has a wheel that makes music when it turns and he was turning it and it looked like he was driving. It was so cute. Something like that is nice because he can lie there and play with it now and he can be propped up and eventually he'll sit up to play with it also.

OMG! That says $199! That's obviously a mistake or this item is now a collector's item but you can find something similar for under $40.

A toy doesn't have to be labeled educational in order to be so. Blocks to stack,buttons to push, and anything on wheels to push and encourage crawling are good. Water toys to make bath time fun are also great at this age.

You can't go wrong with simple basic tried and true toys. Save the talking,interactive stuff for later. Baby should be inter-acting with you not some silly talking computer chip.

Fisher Price has good toys. Shape sorters are excellent for teaching hand eye coordination. Toys to pound and a small riding toy preferably with a handle to push when learning to walk are good.

I second the tunnel. Maybe get him one for his birthday. My kids went through two of them.

The best toy is you! Get down on the floor with baby and play along with him. Read to him. Sing to him.Act like a loon and applaud him when he masters a simple act like putting one block atop another.

I would like to suggest that you get Christmas pictures taken with Brody, you and your dh. This is the best year to get the tradition started. So many many people just take pictures of the kids and mail them out. I want to see the entire family, not just baby. It's really neat to see how people change over the years. Brody may be making the biggest changes, but you and your dh change too. It's fun to look back and see how you have progressed.

Board books. He may just drool on them at first, that's okay. He'll learn to grip them and turn the pages later.
My kids loved books when they were really little, Disney story books, pop up books, anything. It's good to start a tradition of books and reading. Good luck and have fun shopping!

I do have a board book suggestion. It is "Clap Your Hands" by Lorinda Bryan Cauley. Someone gave this to my kids when they were little and they still love it. It's interactive. Every line is an action you do.

While he's not an infant I bought, after a lot of soul searching - Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots for my niece's 4 year old son. I wanted one when I was a kid but never got one. I do like toys that dont need batteries or an electrical outlet. I just hope it doesn't release his inner Mike Tyson...

We got this for our grandson when he was 9 months old and he's 2 years old now. It's been his favorite toy and he still continues to play with it for long periods at a time.
You just have to watch that the child doesn't put small objects into the tunnel at the top or you'll have to take it apart to retrieve the "blockage".

Something I have kept since my kids were little was a couple of plastic musical toys that wind in the back, play a little tune and the face on the front simply turns back and forth. All my children loved to hear the dog bark during the song. They would bust out laughing durng the funny parts. There are so many good choices for toys.

I agree with wildchild's ideas. Any toys that help them get up and moving are good.
