The Kitchen Table

sniff sniff..I smell a rat

There is a small town in Arkansas about 30 miles from where I live with a population of 100 that has been on the news the past three days. I was going to try to tell the story, but it gets more confusing with each news report.

It concerns the police, if indeed there is a police department, a mayor who thought the police dept. had shut down because of lack of money and only recently started back up, and the chief of police who says he's been the COP for years. There were a lot of traffic tickets written ...

I hope you will just watch this video. It's about one minute long. I'll bet you smell that rat too.

Here is a link that might be useful: something ain't quite right

I know for a fact that cops in my town get "quotas" of tickets to write. There's always a lot of cops on the roads at the end of the month.

I am married to a former cop (24 years as a police man), but DH is still in law enforcement.

They NEVER had a quota! NEVER!

Have had the same smell like the above letters, but it was off and on. Except for this summer, and it stayed on! I live in a condo and they sent a repairman who noticed, like me, that it was on and off. We took off a switchplate cover which backs up to the outside wall on my front entry, and the smell hit us full strength. The repairman took off the stucco board, the blue foam insulation and the pink insulation. On the wallboard, the paper backing of the insulation had left oily residue and that is what was smelling. The problem is, we can still smell it even after removing the above. The repairman thinks it is off gassing of the insulation. He's probably right but now what? Right now, I told him not to repair it right away as maybe some of it will air out. I can still smell it, but fainter. At some point he will have to complete the repairs and we're both worried that I will still have that smell. Wallboard is porous so maybe it got into that , but I can't start tearing apart walls! And why now after living here for 9 years?

I am delighted to read that there are other amongst you who find some David Austin roses just awful. I recall being quite shocked after bending to smell the most beautifully formed david austin rose, only to wonder what was wrong. Yes, it is the myrrh fragrance. Resembles cat piddle I think !!!!! Good thing the flowers are lovely. Old world roses take some beating for perfume.

New kitchen, terrible smell!

Oh goodness that sounds awful! We basically rebuilt the entire house up from the studs, and added the kitchen. But I was onsite every day and never noticed any mess that would attract vermin. It was a very neat and tidy job site, with a contentious crew. Not to say something didn't get into the walls, but I can't see them sealing something in without noticing it. I just can't figure out why it comes and goes, or what the coming and going is related to (weather, appliance use, HVAC cycles, phases of the moon......) Did your smell wax and wane, or was it a constant bad odor? And were you able to sniff out where it was coming from, or was the exact source difficult to pinpoint?

What "very fragrant" roses smell like nothing to you and vice versa?

So pretty! I had to laugh at your comment, lyanna. People often do tune out on me when I start in on roses. Every once in a while, someone’s interested. Maybe they’re just being polite, I don’t know. Noseo, I adore your bobcat family photo! How amazing they must have been to see. It’s been many years since I’ve seen one around here, not since I was a child. Rosefolly, I always detect a wonderful scent from Annie Laurie McDowell, and I don’t have the best sniffer. I’m looking forward to planting out the ALMD that Kim budded for me onto Pink Clouds. I’m making sure my battle with Dr. Huey is over in her spot first. I think I may have gotten rid of him for good this time. I just want to be sure, as it will be so much harder once ALMD is there. I don’t want anything happening to that precious rose! By the way, I looked it up, and found that 10% of people actually like the scent of skunk! I guess I’m not the only one. Today, I’m smelling Baronne Prevost. She’s not quite as strong as my Bourbon roses, but still strong and wonderful. Lisa

They do have quotas in our community. One cop even told me once. I guess policies vary from one are to another. I sure don't think it's right for them to manage driving infractions that way.

I don't know if they have quotas here now, but they use to.Do know that our sheriff dept here has been told because of the gas prices and having to be on the road there not to write warnings anymore there to be tickets. DH is a retired cop and still has friends on the dept.

Something's rotten in Denmark. It's funny how now that an investigation is going on, the tickets have been dropped, and meetings canceled.

Looks like somebody found a way to make money.

Unfortunately, that part of Arkansas has a really bad reputation for crime and lack of education. I believe that may also be the area of the state that gave us "Crazy Checks" several years back.

What are "Crazy Checks"?

"Crazy checks" is a derogatory term. I first heard about them about 15-20 years ago when there was an article on them in one of the Arkansas state newspapers. They are/were some sort of disability type check that was supposedly to be given to people who were mentally ill. Some people figured out the system and started purposely having their children 'act crazy' so the familiy could bring in extra money. If I remember correctly, the extra money was being spent on luxury items.

Thanks for explaining.

Very smelly indeed! They probably think they're so small they'll slip under the radar. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

BTW, Linda, I sent you an email a while ago. Hope you got it.
