sniff sniff..I smell a rat

There is a small town in Arkansas about 30 miles from where I live with a population of 100 that has been on the news the past three days. I was going to try to tell the story, but it gets more confusing with each news report.

It concerns the police, if indeed there is a police department, a mayor who thought the police dept. had shut down because of lack of money and only recently started back up, and the chief of police who says he's been the COP for years. There were a lot of traffic tickets written ...

I hope you will just watch this video. It's about one minute long. I'll bet you smell that rat too.

I know for a fact that cops in my town get "quotas" of tickets to write. There's always a lot of cops on the roads at the end of the month.

I am married to a former cop (24 years as a police man), but DH is still in law enforcement.

I just read through ALL these helpful posts because our house has yet another dead mouse (drafty cabin in the woods with 2 cats that like to play with -- but not actually KILL -- mice). This time I think it went into our ceiling to die, and I know the smell goes away in time, but I wanted to share our successful strategy for past mice, especially because it's halfway between living with the smell and tearing out your wall/floor/ceiling. Find the place the smell is coming from. I literally go around sniffing power outlets, light switches, and gaps in the floorboards. If you find the animal, as others say, get rid of it and treat any lingering smell, great suggestions here. If you can isolate the smell to a specific section of wall -- like, once a mouse had died between two joists in our TV room -- seal off the outlets. We have used plastic wrap and tape, but since some of our walls are smooth, I actually slapped a big square of Glad Press-n-Seal over the outlet and light switch and left it there for a few weeks. Every week or so I peeled back a corner and sniffed, and when the smell was all gone, I took off the plastic. This time, the smell is in the ceiling and became stronger when I plugged up a hole by the wall with steel wool, so I realized it was leaking down out of big crack between two ceiling panels. I covered that guy up with a long strip of blue painter's tape and so far, so good. Off I go to place strategic bowls of coffee grounds around the house! Thanks for all the useful info.

I know, Buford, mine rarely have more than a light, barely-there fragrance which made this whiff the other morning all the more stunning. This was not the normal barely-there tea fragrance. Sherry

Oh goodness that sounds awful! We basically rebuilt the entire house up from the studs, and added the kitchen. But I was onsite every day and never noticed any mess that would attract vermin. It was a very neat and tidy job site, with a contentious crew. Not to say something didn't get into the walls, but I can't see them sealing something in without noticing it. I just can't figure out why it comes and goes, or what the coming and going is related to (weather, appliance use, HVAC cycles, phases of the moon......) Did your smell wax and wane, or was it a constant bad odor? And were you able to sniff out where it was coming from, or was the exact source difficult to pinpoint?

Mike, Since scent is primary in a rose that I grow, I spend many hours a week sitting in the garden, literally smelling the roses. Generally the best time for scent is between 11:00AM and 1:00PM. I can't do this every day, but as often as I can. I spend a lot of time in the roses at other times, particularly in the evening from about 7:00PM until dark. At this time I feed my turtles, check grain cups of my pigeons before dark. I have a little loft of 8 hand tame fancy pigeons, Pigmy Pouters and Holle Croppers, right next to the rose bed. They are pet garden pigeons that I let out frequently to bow and strut around the garden during the day. I know how extremely blessed I am to have all these luxuries. I express my gratitude to my Lord all the time for them. I have luxuries that most fast paced, high powered people consider foolish, simple minded eccentricities of an out of touch old man. I was in an eight year relationship with a cop in Memphis and they never had a quota either.

Good grief...I guess some people will try anything! I bet they don't get to keep that money NOW tho! HAHA to them!

They do have quotas in our community. One cop even told me once. I guess policies vary from one are to another. I sure don't think it's right for them to manage driving infractions that way.

I don't know if they have quotas here now, but they use to.Do know that our sheriff dept here has been told because of the gas prices and having to be on the road there not to write warnings anymore there to be tickets. DH is a retired cop and still has friends on the dept.

Something's rotten in Denmark. It's funny how now that an investigation is going on, the tickets have been dropped, and meetings canceled.

Looks like somebody found a way to make money.

Unfortunately, that part of Arkansas has a really bad reputation for crime and lack of education. I believe that may also be the area of the state that gave us "Crazy Checks" several years back.

"Crazy checks" is a derogatory term. I first heard about them about 15-20 years ago when there was an article on them in one of the Arkansas state newspapers. They are/were some sort of disability type check that was supposedly to be given to people who were mentally ill. Some people figured out the system and started purposely having their children 'act crazy' so the familiy could bring in extra money. If I remember correctly, the extra money was being spent on luxury items.

Very smelly indeed! They probably think they're so small they'll slip under the radar. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
