It Is A Hot Cereal Morning!

Right now it is 14 above and bit of wind and some snow on the ground. So I am having a bowl of Hot Ralston cereal. Is anyone else enjoying a bowl of hot cereal? I am having a cup of hot black tea also.

Here in No. Mn. it is 1* below but colder with the wind chill. Hubs and I are having French toast and a link sausage. I had my two cups of coffee earlier to get my motor revving. Happy Monday. Those living in the winter climates...stay warm and safe. Those who live in the warmer areas.....couldya send a little heat our way? Thanks.

Dotmom, you must be having a heat wave.....it's -22 here right now. I didn't believe my on-line temp so stuck my head out to look at the "real" thermometer, and that was what it said, too! No cereal yet, but lots of coffee. Stay warm, everyone.

In winter plain old-fashioned oatmeal, or 8- or 12-grain cereal, Red River that Jasdip refers to when I can find it, sometimes Cream of Wheat, but it's rather bland, I often add either some raisins or some cut-up dates. In summer Shreddies, corn flakes, store-brand equivalent to Cheerios, mini wheats, sometimes Special K (which they said the other day to be the favourite) but it's sort of puffy - do you think that a breeze might blow it away? Often cut up some dates. If you take a check of the price of Raisin Bran ... you may find that buying a box of bran flakes and dropping in a semi-handful of raisins would be less costly. I couldn't fit everything in here so click the link below and let us know what survives the hot fence PLANTS SENSITIVE TO BLACK WALNUT TOXICITY Annuals and vegetables: asparagus, cabbage, eggplant, flowering tobacco, pepper, petunia, potato, tomato Herbaceous perennials: autumn crocus, baptisia, columbine, lily (Asian hybrids), peony, rhubarb Shrubs: blueberry, red chokeberry, cotoneaster, Amur honeysuckle, hydrangea, lilac, privet, potentilla, rhododendron, yew, and some viburnum shrub species Trees: European alder, white birch, crabapple species, hackberry, larch, linden, saucer magnolia, mugo pine, red pine, white pine, Norway spruce, silver maple, and some viburnum tree species CONTROL Juglone-sensitive landscape plants should be located away from black walnut trees to avoid damage. Raised beds near trees will help minimize toxicity, but care should be taken to keep leaves, twigs, branches, and nuts out of the bed. Black walnut leaves, bark, and wood chips should not be used as landscape mulch or composted on garden plants. The best alternative is to choose plants from the list below.

A while ago I put a dinner plate over a straight-sided bowl when reheating stew not long out of the fridge in the microwave ... and after about a couple of minutes ... there was a "Bang", as the heated centre of the plate and the cold edges of the plate didn't jive well together. Result: one less dinner plate for the stack in the cupboard. I don't like the idea of putting the lid on to the pot, upside down (partly because several of my lids have a handle in the middle), then putting the bowl to be heated on top. It's easy, if needing a hot pad to accomplish, to remove the bowl when it's warm ... but getting the lid out of the pot is a different story. Anyone for sticking a knife down between the lid and the pot, then lifting the edge, to grab the (hot and wet) lid with a hot pad? I don't like it. Sometimes, if the bowls are compatible, one can put a bowl with formerly cooked but now cool veggies on the aluminum pie plate atop the reheating stew, then stack the bowl planned for the stew on top of that, for warming. Just one heat source needed. And yes, my stove is of the electrical variety ... and old, and probably less efficient, at that. Can anyone tell me why, when building these new, greatly efficient stoves ... they seem to need to build 'em to last only about 10 years, or so - if that? Many of the ones built about 50 years ago lived for about a third of my age (and I ain't no spring chicken). ole joyful

Dot--we don't have any warmth in Florida or I'd be happy to share. It was 32 when I got up and so windy one of the newspapers had blown across the street! Today's high is supposed to be 43 (29 degrees below normal) and the low tonight 17 (31 degrees below normal). So when we complain about the cold down here remember we're used to a warmer climate and it gets COLD!!! Even the tourists say it's as cold as what they left up north.

I'm staying in today to make candy and cleaning.
